I appreciate Garth, too. I mean I've given him the business many times, but I'm
Kinder Gentler Joe now and we're currently in the Apocalypse. Bigger fish to
fry and whatnot!

I appreciate Garth. Trying to figure out just what the heck he is saying has
taken my mind off the global pandemic for a while.

Re: [RBW] Group Riding / New Covid-19 World

2020-03-15 Thread Steve Palincsar
So much depends on what "group ride" means. If your notion of "group
ride" means pacelining and close contact that's probably not safe.

I led a ride yesterday.    My ride report:
https://ohbike.memberlodge.org/reports/8827761

11 of us altogether.  We had no physical contact with each other, were
never closer to each other than around 5-6 feet, usually farther.  We
rode apart -- there never is pacelining on my rides -- keeping usually
at least a car length distance between bikes.  I asked at the start that
there be no snot-rockets and everyone obliged.  At the rest stops,
people washed their hands in the rest rooms, and before the ride most
people chose a quiet spot behiind a Connex container rather than use the
rest room at the Exxon.  I modified the ride sign-up procedure to
eliminate each rider signing the waiver; instead, they told me their
names and emergency contact info and I wrote it down.

There were two physicians in the group, and they were content with our
"social distancing" practices.

It was a fabulous day, great weather, terrific scenery and all made
better because of good company (kept at a safe distance, of course).

Big rides?  Canceled.  In fact some of our club were packing for a Moab
bike festival when news of the cancellation of the event arrived.   Our
club hosts a metric century in June that usually gets 500-600
participants; the organizers are planning to cancel the event.

[RBW] Group Riding / New Covid-19 World

2020-03-14 Thread Philip Williamson
I rode today with a friend whose wife has been flying, and I have an old person
in the home with a history of pneumonia. We didn’t share beer tasting, didn’t
switch bikes, and didn’t bro hug. I washed my hands at the brewery, washed my
hands at home, and I’m not too worried.

All the hand washing shows me how filthy my hands usually are.

What do you all think about bicycle gatherings? We ride in pacelines,
wheel to wheel, maybe we shouldn't be. When we gather to start or
stop, can practice social distancing SD, but what about moving down
the road. Any brilliant ideas?

Don't paceline.   You shouldn't anyway, for oh so many reasons.

Use a handkerchief rather than shooting snot rockets or spitting.

2020-03-14 Thread lambbo
I’m with Garth on this one; riding will be fine, off bike socializing should be
fine if none of you have had contact with sick people or travelers to effected
areas (even NY/SF) and probably skip if you have an old or IC person in your
home/care. If feeling cautious, skip socializing part of ride.
This is surmised only from monitoring the CDC and news, from NYC where we all
should be much more cautious right now.
