[RBW] Re: (OT) NEED PORTABLE ELECTRIC shop HEATER SUGGESTIONS
I just bought an infrared space heater similar to this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Lifesmart-21-in-1500-Watt-3-Long-Vertical-Element-Large-Room-Infrared-Tower-Heater-with-Remote-ZCHT1057US/206021793 It works well, has a manual cutoff, heats our 10 x 15 living room with no insulation and a giant single paned corner window fairly well. Has a thermostat to shut it off at a certain heat, eco-mode, sleep mode, etc. We run it sparingly but it is incredibly helpful. -J On Friday, December 4, 2015 at 2:51:04 PM UTC-8, Jon Dukeman in the foothills of Colorado wrote: > > My shop is about 12x20. > I'm looking for a GOOD ,not burn your shop down portable heater to use > while working on my bikes. > It will only be plugged in while I'm present. > I'm sure there are plenty of China made heater crap out there. > Any of you have one you have experience using? > Thanks in advance. > Jon > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. They were rated the most efficient at the time (2-3 years ago). They also shut off when the room hits temperature. One of them is currently heating our 300 sq.ft. cottage very effectively. Remote is convenient... when you can find it. Totally not what you are looking for, but... This brought to mind something I had forgotten. While in college in central California I was earning spending money doing grease monkey and light wrenching on a fleet of diesel trucks in a large metal building. In winter they used to heat the place with smudge pots that were normally used to keep citrus orchards protected during frosts. I think we burned diesel fuel in them. I also prefer oil filled radiators myself as they are completely passive , but of course by design are not "immediate" heat . This is their charm and beauty though. No fans or any moving parts, perfectly quiet and there is no hot air blowing around which really is not all that wonderful when you stand in it's presence for more than a a few minutes, but that's just me. I have a Delonghi one from a few years ago , with manual switches for the different wattage/heat settings, usually something like 500, 1000 and 1500 with a rotary thermostat . I had no interest in the digital control boards . If I was going to get one today I'd look at these http://www.delonghi.com/en-us/products/comfort/portable-heating/radiant-heaters/bambino-trn0812t-0105086103 (low and long) http://www.delonghi.com/en-us/products/comfort/portable-heating/radiant-heaters/trd4-0615t-0110616303 (higher and narrower, the standard shape) and here's all http://www.delonghi.com/en-us/products/comfort/portable-heating/radiant-heaters -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I too thank this post. I have a garage and have generally used a propane heater (leave it on for 20, with a window cracked, then turn it off and work comfortably enough for an hour, then repeat the process.) I thought about overhead mounting an infrared heater as well.. How warm are we talking with these, however? It gets quite cold here in Michigan On Friday, December 4, 2015 at 5:51:04 PM UTC-5, Jon Dukeman in the foothills of Colorado wrote: > > My shop is about 12x20. Come to think of it, I doubt a home heater would be sufficient to heat up a completely cold-as-the-air winter workshop or garage, depending on size and preference as to what is "warm" and your electrical wiring ! I'd look at industrial type heaters. Northern Tool may be good place to look . http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/category_heaters-stoves-fireplaces+electric-heaters+electric-garage-industrial-heaters -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: (OT) NEED PORTABLE ELECTRIC shop HEATER SUGGESTIONS
I borrowed my neighbors oil filled radiant heater yesterday. It was a damp snowy 40' day outside. It was about 50' in my shop. I suppose it took an 1-1/2 hours -2 hours to get up to 60' which was bearable, my feet got cold. if I just go out to put on a set of tires. I'd have to plan ahead, turn on the heater 2 hours ahead of time. Not worth it! I'm not the type that trusts leaving a heater run when I'm not there. I think I want a heater that heats RIGHT NOW! FWIW, I would recommend some sort of insulation for you to stand on, it can be as simple as flattened cardboard boxes or as fancy as foam rubber mats. I've used both and they've helped to make it more comfortable to work in my un-heated garage. I also used a heat lamp from Harbor Freight but the bulb burned out and I haven't been able to find a replacement.
