:) Adam, point taken - not looking to increase clearance (or even stopping
power, my paul center pulls are great) - just have a bent fork that pushes the
centerpull pads too far up, so I figure why not fix the problem with a fun
solution.

2018-12-11 Thread Adam Leibow
I have a cheviot and i can't imagine getting much more clearance with
cantilevers, at least not enough to go through the hassle of getting studs
brazed on and re-painted, not to mention shipping this long frame. I
recommend just getting a Clem L, whether it's in addition to or instead of
the cheviot. I have both and I think they are different enough.

Oh, forgot to update the group!

Our experiment is on - more experimental than intended, I ordered non-offset

they are supposed to be offset.
So I think Kai is going to try to improvise with some files, which seems extra

I don't know how serious you are about this but if you're really going to
go to the trouble, I'd suggest instead installing studs for roller cam
brakes on the mid stays and using an old Suntour brake, which are
plentiful, like THIS
 .

That would improve your braking and allow for a much fatter tire - but the
cable routing could be located in a straight line on the top tube, and thus
eliminate the awkward loop, like THIS
,

which is otherwise required to use seat stay mounted cantilevers.

This is one of the things I've long considered doing if/when I ever get a
custom Rivendell, but I'd love to see someone else do it first.

You could then bore and braze a small diameter "tunnel" through the middle
of the seat tube for the bare cable to pass through. (Alternately, you
could add an additional housing stop and a hanger to bypass the seat tube -
but, again, if you're going to go to the trouble then you might as well
take it all the way. Or, if you don't like either of those cable routing
methods, an old 80's mtb or typical bmx U-brake like THIS
 whould use
the same brake bosses and give you *some* of the same benefits. That may
allow for cabling which would look similar to THIS
 Paul
centerpull racer example, but with better tire clearance. In my experience
though, U brakes aren't as easy to adjust, even when they're not crammed in
the tiny space behind the bottom bracket.)
