I certainly would not want to urge anyone to arm themselves unless they are comfortable with a firearm, but if you sometimes or always carry a gun in your car for protection, there is no reason why you should not do so when riding a bike -unless you are going to have to lock the bike and are not able to carry the gun with you in which case you should not carry. I have used the small Wald basket on my Atlantis for carrying a Glock when I know I have to go through a particulary dangerous neighborhood. The gun can be concealed with a bandana but still remains in easy reach. Ahh. The in terrorrem effect of what might be a shoulder holster. Of course for this to work, you're depending on people being of a certain age or at least old enough to have watched Hill Street Blues. My sense is that armpit holsters have gone out of style in a favor of plastic sheaths that slip inside the pants top or in the small of the back. No one really cares about tradition any longer. RE: [RBW] Re: Commuting makes me angry...(might be a little ranty!)
Hmm...I can't believe this thread is still going. I only meant it as a rant. Anyway, I was thinking about how the guy who buzzed me took off when he saw me pull out my phone. My phone is in a holster on the strap of my backpack. When viewed from a rearview mirror, it's hard to know just what I would be pulling out so maybe it was a bit of deterrence. Maybe he thought I was pulling something else out. Joe, who has had relatively drama-free rides since that incident. I've come to the conclusion that the only time I'm ever yelled at, buzzed, bothered, etc. on a commute is when I'm on a bicycle with upright handlebars. Sorry to hear it, that's a crappy way to start the day. It seems like i was getting buzzed at least once a day right at the end of our snowmelt, it felt like all the drivers were crabby to see bikes on the road again and were venting (dangerously). I completely agree that the best defense to carry is probably a phone, and a phone with a camera would be extra useful for grabbing a quick shot of a license plate (though i'm generally not quick enough for this). Documentation is always a good thing. I've seen cyclists heave u-locks at threatening cars, and know people who have tossed open (full) waterbottles in passenger seats. I've resorted to keeping a few cards printed with the MN traffic laws on them (courtesy of a local cycling group) and tossing them in someone's window if they're driving stupidly around me. It's rare that i have a chance to do that, but it's a much healthier outlet than starting a fight with someone in a giant metal box. -- Bill Connell St. Paul, MN- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. If you don't have a good route, commuting on a bicycle is no fun. I guess this is why we read so much about Grant and the gang riding in the hills so much. I am fortunate to start my route on rural country roads with a decent shoulder and I have a bike lane that borders the shoulder of a four lane Avenue leading to decent side streets near a local college that is near my work. Its 20 miles one way so it makes a fine commute although a little long. I haven't had any drivers do anything in the last year when riding near my home but the commute just started for me on Monday and I will only ride it twice per week for now. We'll see how it goes with auto drivers. I know what you mean when someone puts your life/health in danger. Try not to let it affect you too much since the negative stress from getting angry isn't good for you and will shorten your life. I feel fortunate that I have shoulders or lightly drive streets for most of my 7.5 mile commute to work. My work is on a heavily traveled multi-lane road with no shoulder, so I ride in the grass along the side the road. It's quite bumpy and such, but a bit of off road riding on the commute is not such a bad thing. [RBW] Re: Commuting makes me angry...(might be a little ranty!)
Sorry to hear about this Joe. That ride through Leucadia is always sketchy in my opinion without a legit bike lane. Whenever I'm riding south through Leucadia I head up to Neptune and go back to PCH in Encinitas. It's slower, but I've personally had some close calls/angry drivers along the Leucadia stretch too. Guess they're not all trying to Keep Leucadia Funky. Hope today was a better ride! Matt On Apr 13, 8:50 am, Joe Bartoe jbar...@hotmail.com wrote: This morning, my commute to work was a bit scary. As I headed down the PCH from the Leucadia area, I was passed a bit too close by a white Toyota pickup with a pipe tied to its passenger side (along the top of the bed and over the side mirror) like a lance protruding from the front. This was close to the Panickin Coffee place for those who are locals. Then, as I was riding through Encinitas, some guy in a white Lexus SC430 (CA plates containing FORE) decides to buzz me. Then, before I knew it the same white pickup truck with the pipe came along and buzzed me again. Now, I was yelling and gesturing at this guy when he decided to slam on his brakes. I was mad enough to take this guy on, but mostly I just wanted to report him so I whipped out my phone. He must have seen this and he took off. The rest of my commute all I could think about was finding one of these two vehicles parked along my route so I could report them. Unfortunately, I was unable to see the plate of the truck and I only got the FORE on the Lexus. I hate it when my commute is ruined by people whose idea of fun is crap like this. [RBW] Re: Commuting makes me angry...(might be a little ranty!)
My office is moving, and I am anticipating a different commute with longer exposure to dense traffic, as well as the bummer consideration of parking my Bleriot in a deck and not next to my desk. I endorse the non-violent approach personally, but some DC bike messenger associates I knew back in the early '90s carried pockets full of washers to toss at less-considerate motorists. Lots of one- way street options in the urban environs made them impossible to catch after the fact. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Commuting makes me angry...(might be a little ranty!)
A lady once ran me and my 25-lb bike off the road with her 3000-lb Ford wagon -- and I was thankful for years of motorcycle safety training which teaches one to look where he wants to go, not at what he is trying to avoid (I stayed upright). Trying to give her the benefit of the doubt (maybe she simply didn't see me?) I caught her at the next light and asked as politely and humbly as possible, excuse me ma'am, did you see that you came pretty close to a cyclist back there? She replied, yes, and if I had a f-g gun I would shoot you. With that quote and her license plate number, the local police were more than happy to get involved; she spent 6 weeks in anger- management classes. Cyclist +1; driver 0. But generally, I endorse the zero-response policy. Just ignore them. Apologies taking this thread further off topic. Thank goodness Joe isn't the Incredible Hulk. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry. He might have done something he'd regret later. Seriously though, that is beyond weak what some drivers will do. It's pretty lame what some cyclists will do, too, but that's not germane to this thread. On Apr 13, 8:50 am, Joe Bartoe jbar...@hotmail.com wrote: This morning, my commute to work was a bit scary. [RBW] Re: Commuting makes me angry...(might be a little ranty!)
When I was a messenger, it was helpful for me to pretend that cars were just driver-less objects with likely behaviors and conceivable behaviors that I had to be prepared for. Otherwise I'd be furious by lunchtime, and that's no way to live. On Apr 13, 9:51 am, William tapebu...@gmail.com wrote: Thank goodness Joe isn't the Incredible Hulk. Encounters like that suck. I have them all the time. I hate when I let myself get angry. It ruins the ride. But sometimes the drivers do such egregious things, I blow up. I often wonder if carrying a toy plastic pistol in a shoulder holster would dissuade motorists from doing stupid things around me. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. while i don't like the aesthetics on my Rivendell.. i had one of these on my commuter/mountainbike for a while.. extremely effective at getting drivers who are about to hit me to swerve the other way - they react and then look around for the truck they almost hit. it'd be amusing if it wasn't preceded by a near-miss. http://www.amazon.com/Delta-Airzound-Bike-Horn/dp/B000ACAMJC On Apr 13, 2010, at 1:00 PM, happyriding wrote: Encounters like that suck. [RBW] Re: Commuting makes me angry...(might be a little ranty!)
Joe That sucks, getting buzzed is bad enough but aggressive behavior from the guys in metal boxes is a bummer. Thank goodness for Cell phones. I had a guy in a work truck buzz me close enough that I moved too close to a parked car and took out their side view mirror which unbalanced me enough to go down- nice bruise too. So much for the city of Seattle's Sharrows. Of course the mother trucker didn't stop and I got to pay to replace the mirror I took out, but lady whose car was affected was so grateful that I was honest about it that it almost made the incident worthwhilealmost. Easier said than done but don't let the turkeys get you down man. You are after commuting on the PCH after all and not on some crappy quasi industrial urban jungle route -that's gotta be worth something. Hope the rest of your commutes this week are safe and sound.
