[RBW] Re: Loosening Chainring Bolts

2015-08-24 Thread Michael Hechmer
Deac, I do find it necessary to make sure the nut is not spinning, either
with the tool or wedging in a beefy screwdriver. At least in the rainy NW,
grease is a must. I don't typically use a torque wrench but I do finish off
with a long ratchet & allen head. At my age I can't rely on my own sense
of strength. The sugino triple with the stupid hidden bolt make the
process more complicated and over time I have tried to replace them.

[RBW] Re: Loosening Chainring Bolts

2015-08-24 Thread Jon Dukeman in the foothills of Colorado
Patrick,
If you get to a high torque without a chain ring wrench the nut will spin.
They are pretty inexpensive. Also make sure there is no grease on the
threads.
If you are sensitive to Loctite you can try this...have a friend or family
member put Loctite on the threads and let it dry. Then you should be able
to install them.

Eric,
Bees wax is sold and used by the good people at Rivendell to use on threads
and to fill socket head bolts ( stem) to foil thieves.

[RBW] Re: Loosening Chainring Bolts

2015-08-24 Thread Garth

I've found the best way for I to tighten all the bolts, including the
hidden one, is zero grease, zero anything ! No loctite , nothin' . Clean
clean clean. This way I do not even need that *silly and not very good at
what it's supposed to do* "chainring bolt tool".Just tighten them ,
GOOD ! And they stay . . . like a nice doggie !

I used to always grease them or use boeshield or whatever and with those I
needed the "silly tool" ! More like a pita tool . . lol.

Why would beeswax ever be used for this application? Is it a manufacturer
recommendation or a Riv recommend thing?

Thanks, Jon. The scent of Locktite is problematic, and I'm fairly certain I
didn't use beeswax when I put them on before. I don't have a chainring
wrench, but spinning bolts isn't a problem so far.

[RBW] Re: Loosening Chainring Bolts

2015-08-24 Thread Jon Dukeman in the foothills of Colorado
Patrick,
They shouldn't be coming loose.
Are you using a chain ring tool to tighten them?
http://www.parktool.com/product/chainring-nut-wrench-cnw-2

Instead of beeswax try *removable* locktite on the threads of the bolts.
Also tighten them as you would a wheel on your car..skipping each bolt as
go around the chain ring until they are all tightened.
Hope that helps.
Jon
