[RBW] Re: Max-Width Schwalbe Marathon Mondial on Sam & Fenders
Thanks to everyone for their input. Since the Berthoud fenders have generous roundness and fit my 37mm Soma New Express tires easily, I believe I will try the Mondial in 40mm. Once I do I will post. Thanks all (especially for the photographs)! J. John: I've got 45 mm Mondials on Mavic A719 rims (24 mm IIRC) and they measure 44.4 mm @ 50 psi. This is on an Atlantis with V-brakes & no fenders. dougP On Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 8:11:48 AM UTC-7, John Bokman wrote: > > Greetings. > > I've dug into all the back posts about the various widths and etc. but > haven't found what i'm looking for, so please excuse the redundancy. > > Here's my setup: 2009 Canti Sam Hillborne @ 60cm. [RBW] Re: Max-Width Schwalbe Marathon Mondial on Sam & Fenders
I'd echo Bill, i also have a early canti SH, i max out at 38-40mm with 48mm fenders--and most people would not find the clearances acceptable. i have Berthoud fenders on another bike and i think you could push a little more than other fenders of similiar size, but i'd not try anything bigger than 40mm and even then i think you are pushing it. [RBW] Re: Max-Width Schwalbe Marathon Mondial on Sam & Fenders
It depends on what you mean by "can fit". Some people mean just that they won't rub in the stand. It is becoming increasingly common to demand far greater clearance between fender and tire for gravel riding. Jan is now saying 25mm of clearance all around is ideal, while a lot of people think 15mm is ample and conservative. In my experience with a 2009 Canti Hillborne, 45mm tires barely fit with no fenders at all. It would not be smart at all to even try to run 45mm tires under 50mm metal fenders on gravel. I doubt it would work at all even in the stand, but even if you got the wheels to turn it would not be smart off pavement. I'm running real 38mm road tires on that bike right now, but with no fenders, and I believe I have room for fenders with decent clearances. So, if 40mm Mondials run narrow, they probably would fit. You might have to get creative with the internal hardware on your Berthoud fenders, though. Definitely install Portland Design Works quick release thingies on the front fender if you are really going to ride gravel. Have fun!
