[RBW] Re: NAHBS Vaporware?

2022-07-22 Thread iamkeith
Sorry for causing the thread drift. Problems in Denver are multi-faceted.
There's a big organized crime problem, targeting high-end bikes.
Geographic location combined with a population that prioritizes outdoor
recreation, combined with top-down law enforcement directives have made it
a lucrative epicenter for bicyclre-specific crime. But there's also a big
and growing problem with smaller-scale, local property crimes. Politics,
funding and the inability or unwillingness to prosecute means that thieves
operate with no fear. Problems exploded after the Pandemic. I don't
think the current economic situation is going to help.

Giant chop-shops are set up in the open; clothes-lines are strung across
bike paths, more and more homeless camps filled with bikes, brash daylight
lock cutting, scaling multi-floor apartment buildings to take bikes off of
porches; private garages are scoped out and targeted in the upper-end
neighborhoods. Many of the brand new, still-unfilled urban center condo
and mixed use developments are plummeting in value as residents try to
unload and flee. There are literally hundreds of bike thefts a day at
times. It's still a fun place to explore by bike, but you have to be
smart. You can't, for instance, sit at outdoor bistro seating in the
cherry creek neighborhood with your bike unlocked 10 feet away in a bike
rack, because someone will grab it and be gone before you can hop over a
rope to catch them. And I mentioned the REI parking lot, right? An
unattended bike on a car rack won't last more than a minute there. You
still see thousands of bikes in places like the RINO district, but I think
they're mostly beaters, and even those get stolen. Ask me how I know
:-(

I hear catalytic converters are becoming more popular, so maybe that'll
take some pressure off of bikes.

FWIW - I'm surprised bike theft isn't a bigger problem here in NW Arkansas
where bikes somewhat more expensive than Rivendell's get left unlocked for
hours at a time. I reckon there isn't a good way to move them and the

2019-03-22 Thread Ryan M.
I would want a wider rim than a cliffhanger for a 2.8. I have cliffhangers on
my Appaloosa and run the 57mm schwalbe g one on them and that is staring to get
a bit Balloon-like and I would think trying to get a larger tire on a rim like
the cliffhanger would run into issues clearing the v-brake arms. The
cliffhanger is not rated for a 2.8 tire, so I would think a new rim would be in
order.

Gahhh, they looks so damn fun! Thanks for the link, the writer could have
said more about what it has rather than what it doesn't but whatever.

Ryan,

Are you wondering if Riv will have their own rims made for it or just which
they will spec? So far, all the GBW's I've seen are using Velocity
Cliffhangers which are the widest rim brake rim available (25mm inside)
that I'm aware of.

[RBW] Re: NAHBS iBOB/Riv list Get-Together and Garage Sale, Sat 3/16

2019-03-13 Thread Jeremy Till
Hey folks, just bumping this to remind folks attending NAHBS that I'll be
hosting a little get together and garage sale Saturday morning. Details
below. The weather's looking good for Saturday so after the get-together
I'll lead a ~45 min social paced ride along the Sacramento river and
through Downtown, ending at the Convention center.

FYI, since I had a couple of questions about it, NAHBS sent out an email
this morning confirming that SABA (our local bike advocates) will once
again be hosting valet bike parking at the convention center. So if you're
coming along for the ride, no worries about parking your bike once we get
there.

Send me a personal message to RSVP and I'll send you my address. Hope to
see you there!

Hi Neil,

I hadn't considered inviting others to bring their wares, and my
garage/driveway space is pretty limited so I don't think I'd be able to do
it properly, sorry. Would still love you to have you come by!

Thanks,

I've been to Saturday Cycles. I really liked the shop. Good mix of
interesting vintage stuff hanging from the rafters, and RBW style bikes on
the floor.
I really enjoyed visiting SLC, and wish I could make it to NAHBS.

2016-02-22 Thread Neil
I'm planning on being there Friday. Question for the OP: best late lunch
and beer joints near the convention center? Probably riding home to Rocklin
afterwards so can't imbibe too much, but would like to sample the suds and
grab a sammy somewhere. Seems like there are tons of choices down there
these days.

Also, for those attending...I saw on MTBR that in years past, the day-of
ticket line can be long, like an hour or more. Seems hard to believe, but I
never been. Up until COB Tuesday, I think you can buy them online:
https://nahbs.mycustomevent.com/ShoppingCart.aspx?com=detailview&iid=1348&diid=1351&cid=260#Detail

Also, I'm assuming the have protected valet bike parking? Seems impossible
they would not...

I find that interesting, since you're supposed to get a 10% discount at
Motel 6 if you are an Adventure Cycling Association member! Was there a
specific Motel 6 where this happened? It might be good if ACA learned about

[RBW] Re: NAHBS in Sacramento Feb. 26 - 28

2016-02-07 Thread Jim M.

You can get BART at SFO to take you to an Amtrak Station, at which you get
on a Capitol Corridor train to Sacramento.

At SFO BART, take a train heading to Pittsburg/Bay Point or to Richmond,
and get off at the 12th St Oakland station. The Jack London AMTRAK station
is less than a mile walk. The walk is through downtown Oakland, and you can
get coffee/food if you want. Alternatively, take the Richmond-bound BART to
Richmond station. The Richmond Amtrak station is co-located with the BART
station, but there are no services nearby, and the neighborhood is not the
best.

The Amtrak station in Sacramento is less than a mile from the convention
center.

On returning to the Bay Area, you can get off in Martinez, but that would
necessitate a taxi or Uber to Walnut Creek. If you take Amtrak to Richmond,
you can get on BART, and at the MacArthur Station, transfer to
a Pittsburg/Bay Point train (some times labeled Concord). Take that train
to Walnut Creek, and Riv HQ is a short walk. When you're done with the test
ride, you can go back to BART and take an SFO-bound train back to the
airport.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Re: [RBW] Re: NAHBS in Sacramento Feb. 26 - 28

2016-02-06 Thread Eric Norris
Unfortunately, light rail is still years away from going to the airport. Your
best bet would be a taxi or Uber to get downtown … and once you get there, the
transit choices are going to be far less that what you’re used to in Toronto.
You’ll need to walk a lot or check the bus schedules to get around town.

Getting from Sacramento to SF is easier. You can take Amtrak from the downtown
station to Richmond and connect with BART, which goes right into downtown San
Francisco (where you’ll find more familiar transit options). There’s a BART
stop fairly close to Rivendell—check their system maps and timetables online.

2016-02-06 Thread blakcloud
Well I think I lied above, I have decided that I am going to NAHBS after
all but I need a little help with logistics.

I will be flying to San Fransisco on the Friday and making my way to
Sacramento and I was thinking the cheapest way would be to take the train
system from the airport. Can anyone give me any information to make my trip
easier? I know absolutely nothing about the transit systems in California.

I will leave Sacramento after the bike show on Sunday and make my way back
to SF or area as I would love to go to Riv HQ and test ride the A. Homer
Hilsen on the Monday. Then fly back to Toronto on that day or the next.

Thanks in advance for any help in navigating that portion of my trip.

Thomas

[RBW] Re: NAHBS in Sacramento Feb. 26 - 28

2016-02-04 Thread blakcloud
I went in 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2014 and there has been a shift in the show
every time I go and this shift is not something I like. It started with a
show for hand built bikes but now has become a lot more corporate. You see
less frame builders and more corporations, like Shimano, Campagnolo, Gates
Drive Systems, SRAM, Chris King and Rtichey. This is the stuff you can see
anywhere. It is the frame builders that make the show and they are
dwindling over the years.

After 2014 I decided it's not worth it for me to fly from Toronto to the
host city, get a hotel for three or four days and see less and less frame
builders. Now if it was in my backyard, then there would be no doubt I
would go.

I will be fine looking at everyone's photos.

Actually, "Titanico" is the general model name for the SAA saddles,
including the "Legacy" model which is for lightweight riders, so I don't
think they're trying to associate it with big riders. The "X" designates
the saddle for us big guys.

[RBW] Re: NAHBS

2012-03-05 Thread Jeremy Till
I had a busy weekend, so only made it for a couple of hours on Saturday
morning. It was the same overwhelming barrage of eye candy that I remember
from San Jose 5(!) years ago, except with many more people this time.
Highlights for me:

-Finally getting to meet Rick Hunter, who's work and quiet style I've
appreciated for a long time. Nice guy. His off-road touring bike with the
split-handlebar stem was the top of my "niftiest" list for the show.
-Talked some with Eric from Winter Cycles, who I've been aware of but never
really spent that much time looking at his work. He had a great
stripped-down but functional fixed gear with fenders, generator lights, and
a Wald steel handlebar brazed into the stem.
-Got an "atmo" sticker for my tool box, straight out of the hands of the
man himself. He always brings the same bikes to NAHBS--a couple of his
signature road bikes and a cross bikes, all done up with his trademark red
and white Joe Bell paint job. But man, I could spend hours staring at the
details on them; not just in the frame, but the assembly as well.
-Talked with the folks from Selle Anatomica about the new Titanico X, their
saddle for those of us north of 200 lbs that they were debuting at the
show. I'll be getting one for the upcoming QB build. They had an AHH set
up on a trainer as a demonstrator.
-Through a friend, I got to meet Chris Chance and Charlie Kelly! Cool,
laid back guys.

The ride tomorrow morning apparently leaves from de Vere's pub at 15th
and L st (1521 L), mrrting up at 8:30. I'll try to be there a bit
ahead of that.

During the show you'll probably see me in a black and white wool
jersey from Shamrock Cycles (bought that today), and a houndstooth
Walz cap.

Lots of beautiful bikes to see, including a Homer at Selle Anatomica's

more straight-shot (partially involving a MUP canal-side path).

[RBW] Re: NAHBS

2012-03-02 Thread JPTwins
Just saw this on the NAHBS website:
http://2012.handmadebicycleshow.com/2012-news/2012/03/01/avoid-amtrak-from-the-bay-area-this-weekend/
*We have recently learned that the Amtrak Capital Corridor route between
the Bay Area and Sacramento will be subject to repairs this weekend, and
there will be a bus transfer between Martinez and Emeryville. Therefore
cyclists are advised to avoid taking Amtrak to NAHBS.*

So, instead, I'll be taking BART to Walnut Creek on Saturday morning,
stopping in to RBWHQ, then riding my bike to Martinez and catching the
train to Sacramento.

I was looking over some of the later NAHBS photos in Flickr this
morning and found that some of the later posters were shooting more of
the Rivendellish stuff. I saw a lot of really nice bikes. It would

I'm already planning on driving down to see the San Diego show in

Kirk. absolutely. his cx bikes are at the top of my list. and those
fillets on his "raw" frame display sure looked nice.

browsing the photos, I saw some great stuff from Chris King (Cielo),
Zancanato, DeSalvo, CoHo, Alliance, and several others.

Anyway, whereas rando/touring/countrybike stuff was front and center
not too long ago, it's clear from this year's show that there is
growing interest in cyclocross and maybe even steel road bikes. there
seemed to be a lot of "race" oriented bikes on the floor in Richmond,
which obviously isn't everybody's cup of tea - but these bikes might
just be the hot sellers this year for many builders, so that is what
was on display at NAHBS.

[RBW] Re: NAHBS - Observations - Longish Post

2010-03-01 Thread usuk2007
Joel,
Thanks. I ended up getting a 54 cm (c-c) frame as the seat tube length
and standover
height are the same as my 56cm Rambouillet, which fits perfectly. Of
course the Neo Primato's horizontal
top tube and lack of significant headtube extension mean that the
front end is quite a bit
lower than the RAM..very un-Rivish. I compensated by leaving the
steerer a little
Iong and installing some headset spacers so that I don't have
unsightly amounts of stem
showing. I asked for a threaded steerer and De Rosa said no problem so
I have a quill stem
and about 3 to 4cm of drop from the saddle (just like Eddy ;-) ), I'm
still dialing it it.
The bike is great fun to ride. It's 74 deg angles and 41cm chainstays
make quick and significantly
more nimble than the Ram, not better just a different sort of
experience. I built it
up with mostly DA 7800 components, a Velo-Orange Sugino Alpina crank
and a Brooks
Swift which blows away the Selle Royal I started with. Now that i have
the bag loops I
can see some saddlebag credit card touring in this bike's future.

I completely agree, simplicity and classic lines make a nice bike,
hence my recent purchase from
De Rosa in Italy

If it's the same bike (and I believe it is) the mirror image chinese
characters of the supposed owner's name is a major ugly distraction.
I certainly hope that wasn't intentional.

it has clean lines and good dimensions.

2010-03-01 Thread Bryan @ Renaissance Bicycles
Actually, I think the judges agree that classic simplicity is best.
After all, the Best of Show bike by Dave Wages really was a classic
frame done in polished 953. At first glance it might have the
appearance of "Bling", but a closer look (which I had the pleasure to
do first-hand) reveals a lot more:

http://www.handmadebicycleshow.com/2010/02/2010-shimano-nahbs-award-winners/

As the article states, "Asked for the secret of the bike’s success,
Wages said, 'It’s shiny but understated. I keep a classic look to my
bikes and there’s no one element that draws attention to itself. The
beauty is integral.'"

[RBW] Re: NAHBS - Observations - Longish Post

2010-03-01 Thread johnb
It was my first NAHBS so maybe I was looking at it with different
eyes. There were definitely some over the top bikes there and some
racing bikes that did not interest me at all. But I got to see a lot
of bikes that I have seen pictures of and heard described in BQ or on
the web. ANT, Capricorn, Clockworks (sharing the booth with
Capricorn), Cielo (they were showing their bike from the Oregon
Manifest), Bilenky, Velo-Orange, Peter Mooney, and Banjo Brothers
stood out amongst the crowd. I found a builder right here in Baltimore
that I did not even know existed.

It looked like a good crowd on Saturday. In the afternoon it was
downright crowded in some of the booths. I thought that the Capricorn
rack/Bailey bag works bag was a great commuter/errand set up. Dromarti
was there with their beautiful classic cycling shoes. Lucky for me
they were just showing them...

I really enjoyed the show.

2010-03-01 Thread It Depends
His city bike also won the "people's choice" award, or whatever they
called the one that was voted by attendees. And it deserved the honor
-- flamboyant, yes, but amazingly well designed and fabulously
executed. I actually preferred his coupled 650B rando bike, but the
city bike too was flawless. (And both were built for customers, BTW,
neither was a "show bike.") First time I had ever seen any of Yip's
bikes in person and I was wowed. If I were in the market for a
custom, I'd definitely give him a call.

Agree with your thoughts Scott. There was plenty of good stuff there.
Real good stuff. I understand why a show environment demands a glam
factor well above the bar, and I was pleased to see some builders
including some of the more grounded examples of their work in the mix.
It was a little bunched up in many booths, and that made it more
difficult to appreciate the good stuff when it was found -- but that's
show biz. I'll be checking web sites for a more intimate look at what
I may have missed.

2010-03-01 Thread Scott G.
Dinucci won best lugged bike, simple long point lugs, very well
executed.

Tom Kellog had an elegantly detailed rando bike, well thought out
version
of a decaleur integrated into the rack, with a locking q/r.

Not every lugged bike was channeling Hetchins, I look on the bikes
as masterpieces in the old sense of the word, showing what they can
do,
with a bit of show to catch the eye of the punters. Not what you would
order for an everyday bike.

I came home from the show to the Bicycling mag buyers guide.
Think of someone has been looking at Bicycling for their view
of what a bike is, vs. what they see at NAHBS. That there is
a world of bikes that is not defined by lighter/stiffer than last
years bike. To see the wonderful diversity of peoples vision
of bikes, that is what makes the show for me.

[RBW] Re: NAHBS - Observations - Longish Post

2010-03-01 Thread JoelMatthews
Well, I do not swoon at over the top paint and add on, and certainly
do not have racing saddles on any of my bikes. But my everyday bike
is a custom from one of the builders at the show. As it is the bike I
ride the most, I want it to be somewhat special.

Interesting... Part of the logic of the San Diego custom show is to
feature framebuilders of all experience levels.
There was a lot of interesting stuff last year, including lowrider
bikes fashioned by the kids.

I love looking at all the bikes at the shows. Although I get most of them
confused by the end of the day though!

But yeah, they are "show bikes." Sort of like the concept cars they roll
out at car shows to get attention and create a buzz. Also to highlight the
builder's skill. (I love car shows, too!)

It would be interesting to know how many sales are generated directly from
the National as well as the smaller shows. I read somewhere that a booth
cost $1,000 at the NAHBS, not to mention transporting everything there and
housing. Quite an investment for those showing their wares.

2010-02-28 Thread JoelMatthews
Well, I certainly share your taste in bikes. For the most part I
prefer darker, somber colored bikes with classic silver components.

But I have a hard time faulting the over the top designs at bike
shows. The bike builders are business people. Assuming bike building
is their day job, they would have to sell at minimum at three bikes a
month to make anywhere near a decent living.

Much as many of us prefer simplicity, the fact is, loud gets
attention. Case in point: I went to NAHBS in Indianapolis last year.
One of my favorite booths was Yipsan where the builder had a classic
road bike, a functional cross bike and another nice quiet ride. I did
not bring a camera to the show, so I spent some time on line looking
for uploaded photos. It took quite some time and hunting about. It
appears Yipsan got the message, as this year as his rather flamboyant
mixte and rando are on multiple Flickr collections already, and the
show is not even over.

I do not know whether the attention will garner Yipsan more orders
this year than last, but suspect it will. One hopes the customers
chose a more staid design.
