[RBW] Re: Nanoreview, Barlow Pass 700x38C on Dyad

2014-05-28 Thread Deacon Patrick
Received and put on my new-to-me pre-broken in Barlow Pass tires on the
Quickbeam and rode some dirt yesterday and an 8 mile paved backroad today
(all in 40/16, co not too vertical at 500 ft. drop over 4 miles so 2%
average grade). No wind, so pretty easy to compare with other rides on the
Clement MSO's. Initial impressions:

Wow. Fast. Smooth. Fun. Quiet. Wow. This was also my general response to
the MSO's when I first road them, in comparison to the 2.25 Smart Sams on
the Hunqapillar. The difference is that much more yet again.

Heading down, I maxed out my gear a lot more and so coasted a lot more. I
held speed on the rolling climbs far better and longer. There is a steep
climb to get to Holy Rosary Chapel (my destination) that I enter into as
fast as I can and see hot for up I need to stand to make it. I didn't need
to stand. I coasted into the parking lot having world a lot less hard to
get up the hill. I'm stunned at the difference.

If there is a noticeable difference in flats and descents, it's even more
on the climbs. Returning home I was mostly spinning in the slowly spinning
speed, faster than the typical easy end of hard pushing speed (if that
makes any sense).

Dirt: will learn a lot more on longer rides, but handles the loose bits
close to as well as the MSO's which surprised me. Not as much confidence in
the curves, but surprisingly confident. I'm also a bit more timid in the
gravel curves due to a tumble that cracked a rib and hyperextended all the
toes on my right foot, so that could easily be me.

I do not use a computer or time my rides, so I can only go by these
observations of semi-objective data points (due to the single speed and the
only thing changing is the tires). But I love these tires so far and look
forward to taking them on a longer ride once my cracked rib heals up).

Glad you enjoyed the ride, Patrick. I tried Grand Bois Lierre tires (also
38mm) when I did the 650b conversion on my Riv Road, and I love the mix of
speed and comfort they provide. I've been riding them on gravel a lot
lately, and they're just fantastic.

I plan on trying the Loup Loup pass tires when I wear out the Lierres.

Chris, I have not measured them and do not have calipers to measure with.
My front rim is a Mavic OpenSport 15mm for reference. I'm running them at
40psi. Tey're likely under 38mm due to the narrow rim.

2014-03-24 Thread Ty Graham
I jammed the 700x38 EL Compass Barlow Pass on a Rambouillet just as an
experiment. Didn't even ride it since my QR interfered with my buddy's
fender set up.

They rubbed his fender, but should be ridable with no fenders. We had to
deflate to get through the silver brakes.

Here's a picture of our quick
hack. https://www.flickr.com/photos/13233995@N08/13180514203/

Sorry I don't have better data, but I figure since no one else has tried
anything ...

Awesome tire BTW. I have about 35 miles on them and love them. 37mm wide
on my Dyads.

2014-03-23 Thread Lee Chae
Chipping in: I put the 700x32 Compass tires on a few weekends ago. Pumped them
up to about 70-75 psi and took them on a couple of rides. I really liked the
feel and cornering. But I was coming from a handful of years spent on Hetres,
Lierres, B-lines, and Col de la Vies. So I was worried I was sacrificing some
cush in trying out this whole 700c thing. This morning I let out some air to
get them to 50 psi. Cush achieved! Glad I hadn't wasted my time cobbling
together my first 700c bike.

It's making me think there's a light and lively 700c sportif somewhere in my
future.

[RBW] Re: Nanoreview, Barlow Pass 700x38C on Dyad

2014-03-20 Thread Jan Heine
It's amazing how much of tire making remains a black art. The manufacturers
really don't know exactly how wide the tire will be when it comes out of
the mold. However, the size needs to be engraved in the mold before the
first tire is made... So the Barlow Pass measures about 36-37 mm, depending
on your rim width, after it has stretched some.

Since so many riders try to cram the largest tire possible into their
frames, we also need to err on the side of caution when giving tire widths.
If our 38 measured 39 mm, we'd get lots of returns: Doesn't fit my bike.

It also seems that everybody measures tire width differently. If you simply
squeeze a caliper closed until you touch the tire sidewalls, you compress
the tire. With supple sidewalls, you easily get a millimeters less than the
actual width. The most accurate way to measure is by iteratively closing
the calipers, 1 mm at a time. Start with 38 mm, see whether it rattles when
you wiggle it. If it does, go to 37 mm, and so on. The last measurement
where the caliper has some play is the tire width. If you compress the
tire as you measure, you might find that a tire that should fit inside your
frame does rub. (Ideally, you'll have so much clearance that two
millimeters don't make a difference.)

I no longer worry about a millimeter or two in width, but focus on the
ride. I find that a great 30 mm tire rides so much more comfortably than a
mediocre 35 mm tire. Width really matters only when comparing two otherwise
identical tires.

So they might fit on a Rambouillet without fenders? Still not anyone who
has tried it?

[RBW] Re: Nanoreview, Barlow Pass 700x38C on Dyad

2014-03-20 Thread stonehog
Mine are 36.6mm after a couple days of just sitting with air. The front is
on an A23 and rear on a Synergy. I took them out today for the first ride
after getting the new, bigger fenders (zeppelin 52s) on last night. I like
the feel of the bike with these, though I've changed up the Hilsen quite a
bit in switching from the Cypres to the Barlows. No more front rack or
front load of any kind. It now feels so damn light I could do wheelies all
day :)

Back to the tires - I want to take them on a long ride before I give any
kind of verdict, but they felt a bit firmer than the Hetre Extra Legers on
my other current ride, although I'm going to chalk that up to the super
firm Brooks Pro saddle on this (other bike is a soft S-A). They are pumped
at 45 rear, 35 front (I weigh about 160). I may drop the pressure a tad -
I'm putting the Hetres around 40 rear and 30 front for comparison. These
are some light tires! They felt much lighter in the bag than my Hetres,
and they roll just as well, if not faster. I've had them on a half-mile of
dirt/gravel path on the commute, and they gripped as well as any of the low
pressure not-much-tread tires I've tried. The real test there is to take
them at speed down hill on gravel. Perhaps next weekend...

What the whaaat... how can tire specs be so wildly off all the time?
Schwalbe 42's that measure 37 (or 35's that are 33's) and now this? I
really want to love these tires and am looking forward to hearing ride
reports on them, as well as sure word on the actual size.

Here is a public spreadsheet listing actual measurements:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AquGGB-a4RW8dDdVU1hhTG9MQXotb1d0UU91dXB6Y2cusp=drive_web

It was in better condition, but some helpful person apparently sorted it it
off tire width, rather than by wheel size then tire name like it originally
was. Sigh...

Cheers,

2014-03-19 Thread Lee Chae
I wouldn't worry too much just yet. Rim width will play a part, but as
Chris alluded to, they'll stretch out some. I have the 700x32mm Compass
tires and they went from ~30 to a bit more than 32 in a day.
