[RBW] Re: Need your advice on headsets

2016-05-18 Thread Sean on Bike
Wow, my post gathered some great advice including that from Peter White,
I'm honored to say. So, I ordered a Velo Orange Grand Cru from our local
bike shop today which will be an upgrade, just like you recommended
Michael. The only good thing about repairs is the chance to upgrade, right?

Thanks everyone, for your great insights. I will attempt to keep the rubber
side down and wish the same for you.

Peace, Sean

It's too late for me to offer you advice as I see you've placed an order

2016-05-17 Thread Sean on Bike
Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm honored that Peter White chimed in and
learned a lot from his comment. I asked my bike shop to order me a Velo
Orange Grand Cru based on several good reviews. I'm looking forward to the
upgrade from the generic one it replaces. As Michael suggested, the one
good thing about repairs is the opportunity to upgrade.

Wish you all well,

The headset on my Toyo-built Atlantis would never stay tight, so the LBS

Re: [RBW] Re: Need your advice on headsets

2016-05-16 Thread Peter White
No headset will last if the head tube isn't properly machined. When I was
selling Rivendell frames many customers would ask to have a King headset
installed. I was selling the Rambouillet, Atlantis and A Homer Hilsens.
Early frames shipped with a Tange headset, and later frames with a Shimano
Ultegra. With the Tange headset they were never smooth so I yanked them,
machined the head tubes and installed better headsets, usually a Shimano or
King. I didn't bother machining a frame that shipped with the Ultegra
headset since they are quite forgiving of a less than perfectly machined
head tube. My own Rambouillet and Linda's Atlantis still have their
original Ultegra headsets and are doing fine after many years and miles.
But if you take out the Ultegra headset and install a King it will not run
smoothly, at least on the frames of that vintage, which were all made in
Japan. They must be precisely machined to work with a King headset. I can't
speak to the later American built frames, since I never sold any.

By the way, I only stopped selling their frames because they stopped
offering them to other shops. I'm a huge fan and wish I could sell them
again.

[RBW] Re: Need your advice on headsets

2016-05-16 Thread Garth
A Tange Levin CDS 26.4 steel headset is $20-25 , or even the Alu version
for a bit more, both with super polished races and a sealed mechanism.
Classic ! Get them online everywhere . The thing with boutique parts is
they often require boutique tools, parts or service, now and or later.
P-I-Arse ahahahaahahaha !

2016-05-16 Thread kielsun
In my non-expert personal experience, Tange headsets last for a very long
time. Five years for an improperly installed $30 headset is pretty damn
good. Get a new one installed properly and you'll get plenty more.

[RBW] Re: Need your advice on headsets

2016-05-16 Thread Michael Hechmer
Sean, it appears you have had one of those learning experiences that we all
go through with bike wrenching. I myself have become ever more adept at
finding new ways to do it wrong. That said, one guideline and one point of
experience. If you intend to keep the bike (car or any other machine) for
the indefinite future always replace a failed part with one of higher
quality. I have both Cane Creek & Chris King HSs, and they are both very
good. A good HS, properly installed should last a very, very long time.
Every once in awhile I test mine by locking the brake and rocking the
fork, but they rarely need any attention.

I have had pretty good luck with this VO sealed headset for $52:
