Back in The Day, we rode fixed in the winter for training; supless
and
all that nonsense. The gear of choice was a 42X16 = 71 gear inches,
because that was our small chainring. (Everybody I knew used
42X52or53
chainrings, even in flat-road challenged Colorado.) So when I was
choosing my gearing I started there (45X17 = 42X16), and went lower
with the other gears for my middle age power adjustment and hills. 71
inches still feels good through the rolling valley with light winds,
but can be a bit cumbersome in stop and go urban traffic or
headwinds.
Then I use my big-big for 63 inches. I do hate to be spun out for
significant periods though.

Part of the character of the Q for me is choosing gearing, but having
the option to change in mid ride as desired. My wife doesn't get it.
When I speak of such Q things, she looks me straight in the eye and
says slowly and purposefully so it may sink in: Dee Rail Your.
Poor woman lacks imagination at times.

2011-06-19 Thread A D
I was afraid that the 13 tooth range on the 40/32 16/19 would not
work on the SO dropout. I have one of the prototypes so I can't speak
for the production frames.

I run a Sugino double 48/44 the Dos 16/19 on the free side and a Surly
Dingle on the fixed. It works great for my commute and occasional 40
mile ride trip to Rivendell. I'll switch from 44/19 and 48/16 at
least once during the trip.

I'm running the ENO Double/Double (39/36 and 16/19). I've mostly used the
39/16 everywhere. I've not tried to cross-thread the pair front to back -
don't really see how 39/19 or 36/16 would be more useful than just dropping to
36/19 when necessary.

The taller gear setup is just fine for flat city riding where you have to stop
every couple of blocks but a bit too easy for continuous spinning. e.g. I'm
looking for a 14t or less freewheel for the other side of the flip/flop now for
those longer uninterrupted rides.

There are no freewheels smaller than 15 teeth and even those are hard
to findyou may need to up your chain rings or go with a fixed gear
but then you will need a perfect chain line and some form of
attachment to the pedals to be safe. I'd just switch to a 39x42 chain
ring set up or more, if you've the legs for higher gearing. Hopefully
you saved some extra chain links!

The orange is great, but the original green color has always looked
perfect for the Quickbeam in my humble opinion. Very classy but
strong color. It's hard not to like that primary green.

Of course the new S1 green is a great color as well.

Like the Quickbeam, the Simpleone is designed with dropouts that will
manage a difference of 8 teeth. 40/19 to 32/16 is 11 teeth, so you
can't get all four ratios from that set-up. In practice, I rarely
shift my QB. I've thought of making it one chainring/one cog, but
knowing that I have the ability to shift lower if I get too tired on a
long ride is reassuring.

gears: 72-63-55 inches. Like other owners, I rarely shift (out of the

On the other (flop) side is a 23T freewheel that gives me a bailout

all four gear/chainring combinations between the 16/19 and the Sugino
40/32? I'm interested in this setup but only if i can get all four
combinaions. Otherwise I think I'll just go simpler and have 18t as
the main cog and 22t on the flip side of a free/free rear wheel.

[RBW] Re: New SimpleOne owners, how are you liking the Dos Eno?

2011-06-17 Thread mike

So far my S1 has a 17 tooth single. Can't comment too much on it
because I don't even have a chain installed yet, or brake levers.
Should get the first trial run this weekend.

I'm going to get the gearing tested out for a while before I spring
for a White freewheel (if ever). The cranks will *probably* be a
Specialized triple from a 1986 Stumpjumper. I have a 1973 Dura-Ace
crank that is choice number two. I also have a Superbe-Pro crank that
is beautiful, but with a 144mm BCD, I just don't think it's going to
work on anything for me ever again. It's currently on a Vitus 979
frame, but I don't think that's ever going to work for me again
either.

I'm building this frame mostly from the parts bin as you might
guess. My plan is a true single speed, no flops or Dos Eno, but that
may always change. I'm not getting younger. It does coast.

Hey Mojo! Interesting to see that Quickbeam color! Was that stock?
What year? On my monitor it looks a bit like the S1. I guess you
have a different vintage Superbe crank if it takes a 39?
