2018-09-10 Thread Surlyprof
Vincent,

I've avoided a permanent basket mounting with a John's Irish
strap.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/129545862@N03/16159037984/in/dateposted-public/
This is the way I used to strap it to the front rack. Now I attach it the
same way but cross the strap underneath between the basket and fender. It
seems to hold it a little more snug since all the forces are pulling in on
the rack. I'd like to work out a quick release attachment like Clayton
worked out but this has been working well enough for my needs and it's easy
enough to put on and take off.

Hope that helps.

2018-09-03 Thread Ash
Hi Roberta, with this mechanism, the basket is wobbly by nature. Feels
like it may fall off, but it hasn't. I think it will be fine for 10 lbs
or so cargo (a little more maybe, on wider racks) as long as you slow down
on bumps.

Here's a picture from when I had loaded it with two 6-packs and a few more
things. https://photos.app.goo.gl/pcVf21fG8SUcV8Hr9

It was 5-mile ride from the store. It held up fine.

Thanks for all the support everyone. I am blushing. Trying to invent new
simple stuff for my weird cycling world is very hard but rewarding. Hopefully,
some of my ideas will inspire others to invent and make their own gear. The

make a whole new kit.

Thanks again.

[RBW] Re: Not so permanent Basket + Rack

2018-08-31 Thread Bill Lindsay
OK, since nobody explained it, I managed to view the .gif video on my
phone. There's a clip wrapped around the top of the tombstone and a QR
clip permanently attached to the front face of the Wald basket. You
presumably insert the rack in place under the fixed tombstone clip, and
then lock it in place with the QR clip. I like it a lot as a diy-project.
If I were Clayton, I would similarly have little interest in trying to
manufacture it for others.

A theoretical 'run' of a product like this would be made for one model of
Wald basket to fit one model of front rack. A product made for just that
combination would still need some non-trivial installation effort on the
part of the end-user. If the basket sagged or bent at all in use, the QR
clippy part might need to be adjusted. I'd be nervous offering this product
to non-mechanically-inclined end users who don't have the mechanical
instincts to detect when it's getting loose and the risk of it popping
itself off is getting more likely. People building it themselves puts them
in a better position to take responsibility for themselves. If it's too
much trouble to make your own, then you probably don't really need it.

It's super clever, though. I "never" remove my baskets, so I'm good with
zipties

Can somebody explain to me what I'm looking at with Clayton's design? I a
static image in the instagram link posted above. I see a loop of metal that

If that's the whole design, then 'someone do a run' would be cutting strips

and cut and bend the shape for their basket.
If that's the whole design, what holds the body of the rack down? If I

2018-08-31 Thread Brad
On one of my bikes I like to switch back and forth between a basket and a
rando bag. I used zip ties for a long time, but it seemed wasteful to be
cutting them off every few weeks. One of the bikey Instagram accounts I
follow (I can't remember which one) showed someone attaching their rack by
weaving an Arno strap (which is the same Irish straps) between the rack and
the basket. The Arno straps are very solid and I carry heavy loads
sometimes) Now that I've been doing it for a while, I can install the
basket quickly. One caveat: I'm using a Haulin Colin platform rack, so
there's a lot of support for the basket.

Now I'm curious about the tool box buckle technique...

2018-08-31 Thread Philip Williamson
I continue to be amazed by this awesome basket hack.
Definitely worth the digging through Flickr or Insta for find it.

I went the other way, and had my basket silver-brazed to the rack.

I have a few Z Loks : lockable and
resuable zip ties with metal core. Not great for security, but inexpensive
and familiar for this sort of application.

2018-08-31 Thread Tom Wyland

Russ from Path Less Pedaled has a video
showing how to use toe clips
to secure your basket.

I use these Nite Ize Gear Ties
 for securing my
front wheel while I park. Because they are rubber coated they may work well
securing a basket. You can get them in various sizes/colors.
