Re: [RBW] Re: OT: questions about multiple computer screens
I dunno, I just asked the tech, a friend, to make this that and the other happen, and he did. He had to by some sort of plug adaptor for the new Mac. (The screen is a Samsung.) Next project, this time attempted by myself: load Ubuntu on my daughter's 2008 Macbook with failing screen, to use perhaps as a music depository free from F*%^$$!! iTunes. It's possible on any Mac with a multi-protocol Thunderbolt port (2011 and later); you can daisy-chain one Thunderbolt monitor to a second monitor, as long as the first is an Apple-branded monitor with Thunderbolt ports. You can also use a third-party dock with appropriate Thunderbolt/mini-DisplayPort video adapters, connecting the computer to the dock with Thunderbolt and the dock to monitor with a mini-DisplayPort adapter plugged into the Thunderbolt pass-through port. Most modern Thunderbolt docks also include an HDMI port for a second monitor, although the resolution on the HDMI port is often limited to 1920x1280/1400. Displays attached to the Thunderbolt/Thunderbolt 2 port with an adapter can display at resolutions up to 3840x2160 or 5120x2880, depending on the graphics processor. There are also USB-to-video dongles; I think there are USB 2 versions around, although newer ones are USB 3. I've never tried any, but I'm shooping around for one; my current "desktop" machine is a castoff 2011 MacBook Pro with a non-functional display, and I too am used to a two-monitor expanded desktop. Re: [RBW] Re: OT: questions about multiple computer screens
Thanks; I looked up the Dell and it is affordable. A couple of questions about this: 1. "IPS" monitor: is this technology necessary when all you are doing is fancy word processing in Word? 2. With a 24" or larger monitor, I assume I could get away with 1 and have up to 4 windows open on it? That is, you can open 4 and manipulate them separately? (I plan to use the Mac screen as the work screen and the monitor screens as the reference screens.) One problem is that I'd rather not use a 2nd pair of "intermediate" glasses (1st pair being my reading glasses) so Iike my windows big. Last and different question: I've seen some of the newer HD Mac screens (my Pro is 2010), and am I right in thinking that a smaller (say 13") but higher definition screen will be as easy to see as a larger but lower definition screen? Again, MS Word. Thanks. On Wed, Jan 13, 2016 at 11:43 PM, Mike Shaljian wrote: > I can throw in a +1 for the Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24" monitor that The > Wirecutter recommends. I love side x side auto arrange (or whatever it is called) on my Mac. It's great for editing or any writing where I have to reference a second document. However, for writing, writing, I love the focus of iA Writer in full screen, focus mode (keeps text in the bottom 1/3rd like a typewriter, and grays out all but the sentence I'm writing. I try and use my Kindle as my main reference when needed instead of the split screen. I also utilize the multiple desktops and easily navigate with trackpad gestures. But a lot of that is dependent on your OS and your working style. For me, too much "noise" or "clutter" on the screen distracts me, but then I do 1/2 a ting at a time, and that poorly.
