[RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?
By my crude measurements they came out at 39mm on the 22.5mm Salsa Delgado cross rims. They are slightly wider than the Paselas. I ran them at about 75 psi, about the same as how I ran the Paselas. They seem to be lower in profile, I did not measure that dimension yet. I'm going to buy some digital calipers today so I can report accurate info in the future. The Paselas are going on my '85 Bridgestone T700 which has the same rims on it. ~Mike~ On May 1, 12:34 am, Earl Grey wrote: > Mike, > > are the 38 racers wider than the 35 paselas? > > Thanks, > > Gernot > > On Apr 30, 10:49 pm, Michael_S wrote: > > > > > > > Thought I'd resurrect this posting. Thought I'd resurrect this posting. I just got my new 38mm Racers yesterday. Put 'em on the Hillborne and did a loop with dirt and pavement today . For the last 3 weeks I've been riding 35mm Pasela TG's. I feel the Racers roll better on the Pavement. I felt much faster of course I' don't have a speedo so it's all perception. And more supple too. The 37 mm are definitely fatter than the 35s. They do have more grooves in the tread, but that doesn't seem to hurt anything other than picking up a few more tiny pebbles. I'm riding 37mm Paselas (non- tourguard) on my Quickbeam and they are my favorite so far. My impression is the 37mm Pasela sidewalls are noticeably thiner and more flexible than the bike's original Jack Brown Blues (kevlar-belted, 3000+ miles and still in good condition), and the ride feels more cushy and more lively. [RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?
In case anyone finds it useful, I thought I'd add the following information about the Racers from Peter White's page on Schwalbe tires: --- Like the Big Apple, the Marathon Racer has very shallow grooves in the tread for low rolling resistance. It's effectively a slick, and as such will have maximum grip with low rolling resistance on all surfaces except wet dirt. Grooved tread on pavement does nothing to improve traction in the rain, unlike on a automobile tire with a rectangular contact patch. The oval contact patch of a bicycle tire forces water to the sides of the tire, eliminating hydroplaning. Water doesn't build up in front of the tire. Bicycle tire manufacturers put tiny treads on their high performance tires only to reassure consumers who may not understand the way bicycle tires function in the rain. --- http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/schwalbe.asp -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?
I would second this suggestion for heavier riders like myself (190 lbs.), but you might not need them if you're not concerned about durability. I was also trying to go wider than the JBs, and am very happy now with the Marathons. To me the tire is just as supple, but I also run them at a lower pressure than the JBs and again am a heavier rider. I have found that suppleness depends a lot on finding the pressure "sweet spot" of any given tire first before judging - I think this is the range where the tires are most forgiving without being slow and mushy. For me the Marathons have a pretty big "sweet spot". Yea... Shiggy's site... not much in way of fat road tires but there are some cross tires mixed in. And good data on 29er type tires for the Bombadil riders. Wallbike has some tire data at their site as well http://wallbike.com/blog/2008/08/17/schwalbe-tire-inflated-sizes/ Personally I think I'm gunna buy the Marathon racers in a 700 x 38. ~Mike~ On Apr 22, 7:02 am, "Frederick, Steve" wrote: > You'd probably enjoy the reviews and specs athttp://mtbtires.com/site2/ > > Product of another tire-obsessed trail rider! > > Steve > > > > -Original Message- > From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com > > [mailto:rbw-owners-bu...@googlegroups.com]on Behalf Of William > Sent: Wednesday, April 21, 2010 1:43 PM > To: RBW Owners Bunch > Subject: [RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38? > > Those Furious Freds look fun. Someone recently asked for the actual width of the 38mm Marathon Racers. I measured mine with a digital caliper and, as I recall, they were at about 39mm. They are mounted to Sun Ryno Lite rims, which are fairly wide. [RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?
Interesting, my 6 month old JB Greens measure 33.5mm on Synergies. I was under the impression that Schwalbe tires run narrow (judging from a few posts and from rivbike.com which says the 42 ETRTO Supremes are actually 37.5, the 47 Marathons are actually 41.5 and the 50 Big Apples are 44.5 (presumably on Synergies, the rim of choice at Riv). But Michael_S's 42 ETRTO Schwalbe Smart Sams (UK only) measure 41 knob to knob and 38 wall to sidewall (don't know what rim), so I guess severe undersizing isn't true for all Schwalbes. Does anyone have a Racer they can measure to compare stated with actual width? Re: [RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?
I've used both the 35mm Paselas and the 38mm Marathon Racers on the Atlantis. I actually wore out the tread on the Paselas and never had any problems with the side walls. Both ride nicely. I would say that the Racers ride a bit smoother; probably just due to the slight increase in volume, but it could have something to do with the casing material as well. I don't know if I'd say that the Racers have more tread than the Supremes. The tread pattern is really shallow and they almost function as a slick. That said, I've ridden the Racers on gravel and they perform well. The Racers *seem* to be wearing a little better than the Paselas so far. I'd say that I like the Racers better but they're considerably more expensive than the Paselas too. [RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?
You may have bought already but my four JB greens measure between 34 and 35mm the two most broken in being 34.8 and 35.1, I am not sure you are gaining anything with the Paselas. I have been looking at the spec chart for the Racers too, but too cheap to pull the trigger, based on ETRO the 38 racers should be 40mm wide. I have found the schwalbes measure true to stated ETRO data not what is on the box at times. Proportionally it should be like moving up from Rolly Pollys to JB, the 38 racers are the next step as far as I can see. For the moment it is JB green for me. I've ridden both the 35 paselas and the 35 racers (which did run true to size). i recently sold the racers to a list member because I didn't care for the ride. the racers might be relatively more "supple" and have better rolling resistance than other schwalbe tires, but they still felt harsh to me compared to the pasela. in any event, for what you want, both tires are probably as good as it gets at that size in 700c. there's not too many options. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?
I should have mentioned that durability is not an issue for me, and neither is flat protection. I hardly ever get flats, have never destroyed a tire, and I habitually ride tires well beyond their intended use. I ride my Jack Brown Greens on hardpack trails with lots of sharp rocks sticking out of the dirt, and have only gotten one (pinch) flat in 6 months (tire probably only had 30-35 psi, because I am lazy about topping up). I just want something that won't wash out in deep sand as easily, and still be really nice on the road where I ride 70-80% of the time. For dedicated offroading, I have 42mm IRC Mythos XC Slicks, which do the job very well and still are decent on the road. On most of the skinwall tires I have had, the sidewalls turned threadbare (due to UV/ozone, I assume) before the tread wore out, and I'd much rather have that happen but have a supple tire than have a bomb-proof tire that feels dead. So I'll probably give the regular Marathons a miss. :) I am about ready to order the 35 Paselas, because I have the sneaking suspicion that the 38 Marathon Racers are actually skinnier than the 35 Paselas, given that the 42 Supremes run 37.5 according to rivbike. If the Racers run true to size, please let me know as I may try them instead. You could just go with the basic wire bead Marathon that Riv sells: http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/schwalbe-marathon/10-068 They're not supple but they're not that bad, especially when you consider the price. The model Riv sells measures 41 so it should fit on the Hillborne. They're nice off road, durable and confidence inspiring. mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?
ditto, I threw the 35mm Pasela TG's on my Hillborne recently as the knobbie Smart Sams are slow on pavement. They ride very nicely and handle dirt pretty well. They wash out in sandy stuff compared to the Smart Sams though. I'm in the same boat as you and about ready to take the plunge on the 38 Racers. They seem to have a little more tread than the Supremes. After looking at everything else the Racers seem to have it all... light wt, some tread and a supple casing ... so they say... The Paselas are planned for my Bridgestone T700 camper/errand project so I need some final rubber for the SH. [RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?
Gernot: Your selection ought to consider what kinds of abuse your tires see off-road. I've used Paselas, T-Servs, and now Marathon Supremes. The Paselas ride nice but the sidewalls take a beating in gravel, rocks, etc. I went with T-Servs to address that problem and they are much more rugged. I'm currently using Marathon Supremes because I hate flats. The Paselas may have ridden a bit better than either of the other 2 but not hugely different. I have no direct experience with the Marathon Racer but would expect it to be more supple than the Supreme due to lighter construction. All good tires. You just need to think about how abusive your situation may be. dougP On Apr 20, 8:32 pm, Earl Grey wrote: > Hi, > > I am looking for a wider tire than my Jack Brown Greens, that is also > supple and has low rolling resistance (yes, a 700C Hetre). Re: [RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?
I have the 35mm Pasela Tourguards, and they indeed measure 36mm. Sidewalls go before the tread, but cheap enough to not be too upset by that. I ride them EVERYWHERE so they get beat up pretty good. They are very supple, which I love about them. Don't forget to add the Marathon Supremes to your list. They're pricey but last a bit and are supple (or so I've heard from others). I had a set of Pasela 35s for about a year and they were okay. When I replaced the rear I got a lemon as the sidewall gave way pretty quickly. I've been using Panaracer T-serves in 35 and like them a lot. Same tread as a Pasela but with tougher sidewalls. I've used them for road rides, gravel road rides, and centuries. Give them a try. The Pasela 37s seem to be a little harder to find now that Riv doesn't have them. I wish they'd make a 700x40 T-Serve. --mike On Apr 20, 8:32 pm, Earl Grey wrote: > Hi, > > I am looking for a wider tire than my Jack Brown Greens, that is also > supple and has low rolling resistance (yes, a 700C Hetre).
