[RBW] Re: Ride Report: Buffalo to Albany on the Erie Canal
Thank you for your write up! I thoroughly enjoy reading your's (and everyone's) write-ups, along with your pics. It's even more motivating to me to do longer rides, especially since we both have Appaloosas. [RBW] Re: Ride Report: Buffalo to Albany on the Erie Canal
Thanks all for giving my blog post a look. @Sean very cool to hear your story about riding with the scouts. I imagine that was quite the experience for the boys. @Deacon Patrick, Thanks for the kind words. Your blog posts and photos have always inspired me to go out and ride my bike every chance I get. @John, The pleasure was mine. Hope to ride with you again soon! I may take another crack at this next year. @Alex, Thanks for your comments. I love following your Instagram account and look forward to meeting you one day. A Riv meetup would be fantastic! @ Rich, The section between Amsterdam and Albany is paved in most sections. You should be aware that there are a few places where you go off the path in Schenectady and Waterford before taking the final leg down to Corning Preserve in Albany. Let me know if you have any specific questions and I'd be happy to help you out. Tim, really enjoyed the account of your Erie canal ride. It had extra meaning for me since I grew up in Central NY. I was just there in July and was inspired to plan this ride for next year (we saw the rest area in Weedsport where you and your buddy stayed - impressive!). Do you know what the trail conditions are like between Amsterdam and Albany? Sorry the trip ended on a somber note but glad the overall experience was a good one and you arrived home safely. Love this story Tim! I was super excited when I saw your first instagram post but then I realized I was a couple days late luring you into Rochester :-) Maybe we can get you north a bit next time and micro tour all the breweries and vegan places to eat in the city. John is a treasure! For any other Riv canal tourers, you're always welcome to pitch a tent and shower/do laundry/cook/grill/make repairs at our placewe're approximately 7.5 miles off the canal and most of that is traveled on an old rail bed/power ROW. Now that I think of it, I should set up our big-ish shed to be able to accomodate a bug net for rainy overnights. Tim, it was great meeting you both and our pleasure hosting you for a night here in Central New York. I've met and ridden with a number of people from this group over the years and in every case the experience been memorable for it's congenial good fellowship. I certainly can add another to that list. Best wishes, John PS That Joe is a beauty! Great ride report, Tim! What a fantastic experince, and I love your examination of conscience at the end. That’s one of the amazing gifts I find with biking in general, and multi-day rides more deeply — they are great at pealing back my stupid so I can see it more clearly! Grin. One thing I’ve learned to do, which isn’t easy on a planned distance tour but works for me, is to ride 6 hours a day. I can do 8-10 hours if I have to, but 6 is my sweet spot. That way, when x takes longer, or there is no water until two hours farther, or whatever other challenge happens, it’s already built in. On the weird days when everything goes right, more time for pipe and whisky at camp. Grin. The beer stops sound great. And what a great highlight to the trip, spending time with John. Lovely. Thank you for sharing your great photos and adventure! With abandon, Patrick -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Ride Report: Buffalo to Albany on the Erie Canal
Tim, I loved reading your story about your Erie Canal trip. I do wish that the story had ended on a happier note. On the whole, however, it sounded like the ride had more highlights than low-lights. Still, based on my own experiences, that tough last night would be a lingering bummer. You will have to make the trip next year! I live about 20 miles south-east of Buffalo. A few years ago my son and I, along with a number of boys in his Boy Scout troops, rode from Lockport to Albany. The first few days were awesome (yes - Holley is a great place to camp). However, after that it rained like crazy. There were large sections of the trail that were closed due to flooding of the Mohawk River. This led to some difficult moments (and lots of mosquitoes), but also made the trip an even bigger adventure. If I recall correctly, we took seven days to do the trip (the majority of the boys were approximately 15 years old and were not well-trained cyclists). We averaged approximately 30-35 miles the first few days. However, on the last day we did approximately 70 miles. The kids were amazed by how far they rode that day! I hope to do the trip again some day. In the past I rode an early 90s Trek 520. Next time, I plan to take my Cheviot. Thanks, again, for sharing your story.
