2011-04-08 Thread William
Excellent shots on your flickr, Aili. I like your Atlantis a lot!
There's something especially awesome about how those white-hooded 105
brakelever hoods age. Somebody should do a photo essay of all the
shades of brown, grey, black, and white those hoods can become over
the decades.

Another lady lurker here. I've actually been reading this list for
ages and have bought a ton of stuff off the other lovely posters here
but I am often too busy to post (or tired of being on the internet).
I'll try harder! Beautiful bikes everyone.

I am, however, a Rivendell enabler and have peer pressured (gently
shoved?) someone else on this list into getting a Rivendell (hi!) as
well as some other folks. I'm a bike mechanic and my girlfriend
usually borrows a Rivendell from me for anything longer than 20km (we
bike camp). I just built her a really nice new bike but she seems
hesitant to stop borrowing mine. Hmm. Whatever makes her happy.

I've got a beefy camping and touring ready 54.5 (26 inch wheeled)
Atlantis, a go fast 56 Rambouillet (green), soon a Box Dog Bikes
Pelican and various other bikes. Rode a Populaire 100 on Sunday and
saw some other Rivendells as well as a couple of Riv caps and bags. I
was In good company.

Also, apparently, too busy to keep my flickr account very current but
I do have some photos up there.

Maybe I'll throw up some more bike and bike trip photos.

Cheers!

Hi Ray,

Actually, I ended up removing the frame lock -- it wasn't a great fit
and I didn't want to rub the paint off the frame.  I got a mini U-lock
(I live in Boston) and installed Pitlock skewers -- now I can lock up
my bike with relative confidence.

I also changed the handlebar tape, switched to a sturdier mirror, and
a few other things.  I don't have a current photo of the bike, but
here's a more recent pic from a family credit-card tour last August:

Not only is your finished Riv stunning, but I love that you

2011-04-05 Thread Liesl
Whoa! Great to see all the posts and read all my fellow lurkers'
posts! And what pretty bikes we have. It's especially fun to see the
raw clear coat Rodeo with, among other fine accoutrements, a Finesse!
Now that's a woman's riv! Okay, I'll get some pictures up on flicker
and report back when I do. And a fast correction: the reissue
WoolyWarms don't come in women's sizes; that was a typo. I meant to
say that the small fits me, a small woman, just fine. The cardigan is
really the same in fit, style, and wool as the original issue. My old
one has so much dog-induced beausage from biscuits in the doit pockets
that it probably won't handle being darned again--but that's another
story. My main point is: great to hear from all the Riv Chicas. (And
thanks to all the posters at large because I continually learn so much
and get so inspired from the discussion threads and the photos.)

I'm also a lurker. I haven't posted simply because I've not much to
say, but this thread is bringing me out of the shadows (if only
briefly)...

Here is a picture of my AHH... http://www.flickr.com/photos/jcaddick/5587292295/

At one year old, this bike has been pure joy for me to ride. Before
AHH I was primarily a commuter/utility cyclist - riding my mid-90s
Rocky Mountain Fusion mountain bike. Since AHH, I've joined a casual
bicycle club (riding most Sundays anywhere from 60-90 km), ridden the
100 km route in two populaires, ridden 122 km in the Whistler
GranFondo, and commuted to work and around town. I ♥ my AHH!

My favourite comment this weekend from a man walking on the street was
"That's the first Rivendell I've seen in this town," to which I
replied "there are a few." There are quite a few, actually, but the
sight of one is still rare enough for those who know a Rivendell to
get excited.

I don't think of it as diminutive or derisive at all.

I think of it as a shortening of something like 'the girl in question'.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell chicas

2011-04-05 Thread TSW
It would be great if more women felt more welcome to delurk. A reason
I like visiting places like Lovely Bicycle (today's post is quite a
propos: http://tinyurl.com/4xwsdyk)

Speaking of the term "the wife," is it anything like "the hubby?"
which in places like Yelp you'll find quite often, which seems more to
be a kind of post-feminist Gen-Y thing.

What male cyclist with a female partner doesn't want to get her more
into cycling? Making a place more inclusive, either online, or at the
bikeshop or on the road, can only help.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell chicas

2011-04-04 Thread Liesl
Good to hear from Rivendell Chicas. As an avid-reader-but-seldom-
poster of the RBW Owners Bunch, I often lament that there is such a
limited involvement from women (myself sadly included). Anne, yours
is one of the few women's voices I see regularly, and so it's been sad
to see that no one has responded to your post. When I read frequent
references to things like "the wife," while I don't assume it is meant
to be a put-down, it does contribute to making me feel that I am
entering a male space. It's so often used when men are choosing and
buying bikes for their women... I have loved few things more than
learning about bike design, parts, and outfitting myself so that I can
ride all year round here in Minnesota. What an adventure of the heart,
spirit, and body.

So, perhaps there are folks out there who have the opposite problem of
big guys' bikes with their double top tubes and diagatubes and so
forth, that seek recommendations for the little bikes, ones that are
in the 48 to 52 cm range. For example, I've struggled with saddle bag/
rack combinations for bikes with not much room between the saddle and
the fender! I found that Mark's Rack works rwonderfully because its
height and distance from the saddle are infinitely adjustable. I've
used it with my old Baggins Adam (the just-smaller-than-the-Hoss for
you old timers).

Also, at a recent--and really enjoyable--visit to Riv HQ, the women's
small WoolyWarm vest and button-up, which I believe at one time were
boasted in the ever memorable e-less catalog to be appropriate for
Baffin Island, fits a 5'2", slightly plump, 50+ year old woman, and
the little Hunq is a blast for the same sized/aged person.

Maybe I'll even go crazy and post pictures of my 2006 red 50cm Saluki
and my 2009 clear-coat Proto Bleriot set up as a poor woman's
Quickbeam.

Okay women, I'll stop being a lurker if you will.

fondly,
Liesl
