2016-03-18 Thread Ryan Fleming
I know that every year (since I don't ride in winter) my ass (sit bones)
flat out hurt for a while. After a few rides , I'm good. I ride B-17
specials. About the sensitive bits...they do get sensitive from time to
time whether I'm wearing lycra (for longer rides) or FOTL cotton under
cargo shorts for work. I haven't successfully figured that out; I find
lycra (pearl izumi ) stitching can bug me as can standard cotton
underweargeez, seamless would be best. Maybe we're just sensitive,
poetic souls :) I wonder what the other ladies can suggest. As for your
saddle, maybe it's lost a bit of tension...it sounds like something may
have altered there.

By the way, I'm so glad your surgery worked out and you are riding your
Betty again!

I'm riding on Soma B-Line tires. They're plenty cushy, but grippy when it's
wet and tough enough for city streets.

Hi Cecily,

Just a thought, but what tires are you riding? My wife thought her
Brooks B67s was too hard until I switched her Betty Foy over to a pair of
26" Compass Bicycles' tires.

The same worked for me on my Hunqapillar. After I put on a pair of Barlow
Pass tires, my favorite saddle is a Berthoud Mente.

For us, it wasn't our saddles causing us pain, but rather the bumps and
road buzz from our rather poor city roads.

YMMV,

2016-03-19 Thread Michael Hechmer
Cecily, I am very happy to read that you are riding again. Yea! I'm not a
chica worrior but my wife, Patricia is. She has tried many saddles.
Probably dislikes the Terry & B17 the least. Her complaint was not about
her buns but the lady parts. I was especially motivated to help her solve
this problem and we tried lots of reach, height, and saddle combos. Many
brought some improvement. Then one day our parked tandem fell over and
after we restarted riding we discovered that her saddle had been knocked
5-10 degrees to the right. I offered to fix it but she told me it was even
better than OK. She has been riding with an off centered saddle ever since,

Hey Cecily! Good to hear from you! I too haven't posted in a long while and
barely kept up with my list reading. But when I see a call out to Riv Chicas, I
gotta do my part!

I echoe all the comments about tilt of saddle, height of saddle, and bar
position. All quite subtle. I might add that all of my B17s feel different. I
have one that's consistently the most comfy. If you have a LBS that will let
you try a few saddles, especially the cambium carved or a flyer, you might find
out a lot. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Yours in solidarity,
RCW

[RBW] Re: Saddle Advice Needed, Especially From the Riv Chica Warriors

2016-03-19 Thread Linda G
My theory (supported by some reading I've done) is that the muscles in the
butt build up from riding, making for less soreness over the "sit bones"
with time. I have a B17S on my Rivish bike and have found it to be
comfortable from the start for the sit bones but I had to get the tilt and
setback just right for comfort in other areas. I briefly tried a Terry
women's touring saddle before the Brooks and my sit bones hurt like crazy
no matter what I did. Now I have a new bike and since I already had the
Terry saddle, I put it on. No sit bone discomfort at all. Both bikes have
handlebars an inch or two above seat height. I had been riding regularly
since I first put the Terry on the Rivish bike so I think I had just built
up some muscles. So my advice is to play with the saddle adjustment. Maybe
it got out of whack while you were not riding. Then just give it a try for
awhile as you build your muscles back up.

2016-03-19 Thread Garth

I've had it happen to me a saddle and type that once "worked"
suddenly no longer does . I ended up using saddles(much wider and well
padded) I would never have thought I could or would ever use. I now
understand that all theories regarding saddles are no more than opinions,
everyone has one and thus none are absolute .

Maybe a like shaped padded saddle is for you , maybe a simple sheepskin
cover for your Brooks , maybe somethin' somethin' . . ..

Bottom line : Listen to yourSelf

If it was comfortable and now it is not, you probably need a new saddle. My
wife's saddle changed over time and she bought a new one and the problem was
solved.

[RBW] Re: Saddle Advice Needed, Especially From the Riv Chica Warriors

2016-03-19 Thread WETH
Cecily,
Congratulations on the strong recovery!

FWIW, and noting I am not a Chica Warrior, my wife could never get
comfortable on traditional saddles. They caused discomfort in "sensitive
areas" etc...
I bought her a Spiderflex saddle to try.
http://spiderflex.com/index.php?page=women-cyclists

She loves it and swears it is the only saddle that has allowed her to ride
pain free. Being hornless there are trade-offs: she has less control with
her inner thighs and has to guide/steer the bike more with her arms, it
puts a bit more weight on her arms/hands, and it looks unconventional.
She, however, doesn't care as it allows her to ride relatively pain free
and any saddle soreness occurs on the back of her thighs where she doesn't
mind putting up with it until the skin toughens up each spring. She rides
in an upright position using albatross bars.

I believe the company is Canadian and might have a greater retail presence
in Vancouver than they do in the USA.

Best wishes,
Erl

Cambiums are such great saddles (I have the C-17 carved). I had to have 2
Berthoud saddles warp on me over time before I switched from the endlessly
transient nature of leather. It's so nice to not have to be paranoid about
rain and tension bolts and the saddle just stays the same -- perfect.

Hi Eunice I agree with you there. I did not care for the shorter

Re: [RBW] Re: Saddle Advice Needed, Especially From the Riv Chica Warriors

2016-03-19 Thread Eunice Chang
Hi Cecily,

Yay on riding your bike again! I know that feeling well!

I haven't ridden much in the winter (and late fall), so when I went back to
riding, I was definitely a bit saddle sore. But my recovery was like 1-2
days, provided I kept on riding everyday. Like you, most of my riding is
short- anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes to my destination.

However, I don't know if this would be helpful or not, but I have generally
found Brooks women's saddles to be more uncomfortable than men's saddles. I
can barely tolerate Brooks women's B17 but am very comfortable in a men's
B17 (my favorite saddle). I can tolerate women's B67 but I have to remember
to keep the nose up or I slide off it. Brooks Flyer in men's size is
another okay-ish saddle for me- not as comfortable as men's B17, but
definitely far more preferable than women's. I suspect it may be a YMMV
thing, and there's probably a lot other factors going on (for example, the
women's saddles were probably not broken in, but the men's were).

And if it helps here's the saddle/tire/bike combo:
men's B17 // nomad resist 700 x 45 // AHH
women's B67 // hetres 650b // custom mixte
men's Flyer // panaracer pasela 700 x 32 // Quickbeam

All on Albatross bars and relatively similar saddle height.

Also, my pain tolerance is crazily high, so you might not want to listen to
me. I was riding uncomfortably on that women's B17 with the worst handlebar
position ever (lots of stress on wrists) for about 17 miles in 97%
humidity. On the other hand, I did get to ride on the tandem again as a
stoker in the cool summer night, under the stars, so it was worth every
mile and ouchie, but...

-E.

Hi Ryan,

My custom mixte was made by Ezra Caldwell of Fastboy Cycles - he sadly
passed away almost 2 years ago.

Here's my photoset of my mixte over the various years:

Here's Ezra's (more professional) photos of the mixte:

That's a really sweet looking bike and I like the colour a lot. Now is that
