[RBW] Re: Singlespeed wheelset advice needed
Longleaf seems like a great option - seems to be a smaller operation than some of the other custom places and the prices are really reasonable. I may just order a set through them. Thanks for the advice. On Nov 3, 1:13 pm, Lee wrote: > You may try contacting Anthony over at Longleaf (longleafbicycles.com) > to see if he has a budget SS wheelset sitting around. Jim, Unfortunately those won't work with my frame spacing. On Nov 3, 1:09 pm, "Jim M." wrote: > Riv has these for > $200:http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/budget-twin-hollow-wheelset/18-312 > . [RBW] Re: Singlespeed wheelset advice needed
As long as the retailer specifies that the wheels are handbuilt, i wouldn't worry about it. It's the machine built wheels that are the source of the horror stories. The formula hubs are a good deal, i've used them before and been satisfied; they perform well and the bearings last a long time. Just as a note, you can't easily convert them to QR since they use a special shouldered axle. Surly hubs can be easily converted. I'm planning to get the 27" CR18/ formula hub rear from harris for an upcoming project. I have a QB wheel (well, the same hub, different rim) that I'm not using for sale. I got this from Franklyn on this list a while back, and have put a couple hundred miles on it, but I'm in a paring-down mode. I believe this was laced up by a local shop in Berkeley and the axle changed to a solid axle. Contact me offlist if you're interested. You may try contacting Anthony over at Longleaf (longleafbicycles.com) to see if he has a budget SS wheelset sitting around. I believe he specializes in SS and fixed wheel-buidling. Note: I am not related nor an investor nor getting any kickbacks from Longleaf :) Or contact Rich himself to see what he can do for you (handsonwheels.com). Same disclaimer :) Good luck! Riv has these for $200: http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/budget-twin-hollow-wheelset/18-312 . I weigh 220 and have used these wheels for a budget project. They ride well and I've had no problems with them. They have cassette hub, but you just need some spacers and a cog to make them SS compatible. jim m wc ca On Nov 3, 8:39 am, Dlbracey wrote: > I'm building a commuter bike right now and I need a strong singlespeed > wheelset for my 225lb self. [RBW] Re: Singlespeed wheelset advice needed
I also wish that the Quickbeam wheelset was offered seperately, as I would also be interested in them (or atleast the QR flip/flop hubset). I have been very happy with a bike of mine that has A319 rims and would definately put them on another. They are affordable but definately don't feel cheap and I really like how they feel with Schwalbe Kojaks. I had bought the wheelset new off of Amazon for $130. This included A319 rims, Tiagra hubs (8/9 speed with Q/R's), and DT spokes. I had thought for sure that they were going to be very out of true and were going to need major attention, but suprisingly this was not the case. Maybe I got lucky? This is the only set of wheels that I have bought this way, so I can't say for sure if this is a trend or not. FWIW, it is nice to be able to get something from Riv and not have to worry about it not being crappy but as of now they don't offer a set of flip/flop wheels. You could probably just gamble with getting some pre-built ones and in the worst case scenario you would have to take them to your LBS to get touched up, but you are probably still going to get a pretty good deal if you get them online which will still make it worth it. On the other hand, your LBS probably has a set of basic Formula hubs that they would be willing to build up, and it may be just as cheap to have them do it and you won't have to worry much. I have heard very good things about the CR18's and they are really cheap, so ordering them from your LBS and having them built could also be pretty affordable. Unfortunately, I have had no experience with the VO rims but I have been very happy with various other VO parts and it would shock me if their rims were not great, too.
