[RBW] Re: Tandem tour of Japan

2011-02-21 Thread Earl Grey
2 weeks, 8 days on the bike, plenty of time for sight-seeing and
eating. Basically we took a train from Tokyo to the north coast, rode
around the Noto peninsula, and from there to Kanazawa, Hikone on Biwa
Lake, Nara, and Kyoto, jumping on trains every once in a while to
bridge distances that were too large. Then back to Tokyo on the
Shinkansen. For a pleasant bike tour in Japan, basically stay away
from the population centers along the south coast of Honshu.

 Beautiful!

 How long was the tour?

 Where did you visit?

I was thinking of a month tour of New Zealand next year on my un-Riv
bike so I guess Japan has to be after that!

I'm sure I'll annoy you with many questions!

 Thanks!

Not so much Riv content, as we rode our unrivvish (though rivvified)
mtn tandem, as we didn't want to bring the rivvish Ibis tandem when we
relocated to Thailand. But some pictures of Japan's great bike
culture, and perhaps a nice diversion if you happen to be stuck

[RBW] Re: Tandem tour of Japan

2011-02-21 Thread Earl Grey
14 days, 8 on the bike. Check these maps for routes:

Part 1, actual:
http://maps.google.com/maps/mm?ie=UTF8hl=enll=18.796464,98.660059spn=6.840065,9.140625z=7

Part 2, planned, but got changed last minute (see text):
http://maps.google.com/maps/mm?ie=UTF8hl=enll=18.796464,98.660059spn=6.840065,9.140625z=7

We took trains to connect from and to Tokyo, and to bridge bigger
distance through less interesting terrain.

2011-02-20 Thread franklyn
Thanks for the amazing set of pictures. I have traveled to Tokyo
several times on business, and love it as an extremely livable city--
it's perhaps one of my three favorite metropolitan areas. Wish I can
do a similar tour one of these days.
