[RBW] Re: Today's brevet.

2011-03-21 Thread Mike
Kevin, I should be at 3 Capes unless the weather is super dismal.
It'll be my 4th time doing it so I don't feel like I'm missing
anything if skip it. I just haven't been getting enough rides in.
Seems like all the dry days are when I'm working. Two of the last
three editions of 3 Capes have been rescheduled due to snow in the
coast range. I wonder if that'll happen this year.

I think 3 Capes would be doable on a track bike. 2 of the Capes are
pretty steep but the roads are usually quiet enough where you can
traverse the road if it gets too much. The climb up and over the coast
range is pretty tame and the climb back from Pacific City is nothing.

Do say hi at the start if you're there. If I'm there. I'll be on the
Hilsen although this will probably be the last brevet on it as my
rando bike is back from the painters and waiting to get built-up.

Hey Lynne, are you doing PBP this year?

2011-03-22 Thread Lynne Fitz
Mmno. :-) I have yet to successfully complete a 400! Plus, we've
got the Fitzsimmons Family Heritage Tour to Ireland this summer; I've
only got so many weeks I can take off without pay (says the
contractor). But the bike is going to Ireland with me, for when the
spousal unit is golfing.

What about you, shiny new red bike and all?

2011-03-13 Thread William
My 200k was substantially more favorable. I did the Santa Cruz
Randonneurs Moss Beach 200k. It was mild, partly cloudy, some
brilliant sunshine, and not a hint of rain. I was counting my
blessings already, but now I'll recount them. Good on you, Mike, for
grinding it out.

[RBW] Re: Today's brevet.

2011-03-13 Thread Mike
I really tapered off riding after Oct and have pretty much refused to
ride in the rain if I could avoid it so my base miles are off. Last
weekend I crammed by riding my Quickbeam last week. I did a 30 mile
flat ride Sat, 30 mile mixed terrain ride on Sun and then a 100k,
mainly flat, ride out to the gorge on Mon. I think it just kind of
left me tired more than anything else.

Also, this was my fourth time doing the Birkie and my umpteenth time
doing a variation of this ride so I think I was a little bored. I'm
still planning on improving my times for the 400k and 600k this year
which could happen.

For the last 30 miles of the ride my friend Joshua and I kept talking
about how next year will be the year for touring and camping. We kept
making jokes about how if we were touring we could just stop and pitch
camp off the side of the road. I do think I may take a break from
randonneuring next year or ride some different events. But then again,
I think the Cascade 1200k may be happening next year and I've always
wanted to do that so who knows.

For the moment, I'll enjoy some afternoon coffee, a book (You Are Not
A Gadget), and a movie later today with my wife.

[RBW] Re: Today's brevet.

2011-03-14 Thread Mike
After we left Birkenfeld there was this thick light steady rain that
hung over us until Vernonia. When we got back on Timber Rd it cleared
up but we were all just feeling a little cooked.

At Glenwood I used the Magic 8 Ball app on my phone to ask if it would
rain on us before the finish at Forest Grove. The reply was "Yes,
definitely". And sure enough it started raining as we rolled along
Gales Creek and back into Forest Grove.

I'm glad you had fun Lynne. You looked really comfortable when I saw
you motoring into Birkenfeld.

Mike! I don't think I met you on Saturday -- I remember seeing a
rather beautiful A.H.H. at the start, though! I was on the white Colin
