I can take another 3 bikes so let me know if anyone wants to carpool.

I haven't done that one. Have you done it on your Quickbeam?
Also, when I think of Pine Mountain, I think of a mountain bike loop
ride I've done. How do you add Pine Mountain to the Tam route?

Basically, just head out of Fairfax on BoFax (Bolinas-Fairfax Road, for alla
youse non-locals) and you will crest out above the golf course at the
entrance to the Pine Mountain loop (fire road). So, it's not technically
Pine Mountain per se, but you skirt the entrance to that ride. West
Ridgecrest dead-ends into BoFax (and if you get a mixed-terrain hankering,
you can pick up Bolinas Ridge Fire Trail and head north on that).

If you wanted to add the Pine Mountain off-pavement loop to that, there are
a few ways to do it, most of which would require some noticeable climbing
and mixed-terrain linkups. I'd pack extra food. And water.

But, I was really just talking about the paved route I'd posted.

Hope that makes sense,

- Jim

If you mean BoFax to Westridge to the East Peak?

I think the pitch up from Alpine dam is a little tougher - probably more
mentally because there's not a lot to gauge your progress from. Going up
Diablo, you see the height as you gain it, which always helpful.

Of course, Diablo is taller, but given the up/down/up on the Fairfax route,
I'd bet the climbing is similar in overall elevation.

Those are both two of the really fine, interesting and beautiful climbs in
the greater SF Bay.

True. Unlike the Alpine dam climb, there aren't many 200' Redwoods left on the
slopes of Diablo to obscure the horizon. But then, there are fewer
fog-drenching
wind-blown afternoons experienced climbing the latter.

Northgate Rd averages 6.9 percent with a peak, riding up to the 1,000-
ft mark, of 12+ percent.
A 2000 fit climb in 6.5 miles.

Summit Rd. from the junction Ranger Station to the top, is a 7.5
percent average, and a 1470-ft or so climb in 4.5 miles, with a short
10 percent section around Blue Oak campground, and then the dastardly
19 percent last tenth-of-a-mile or so.

According to the book I wrote in 1982, at least. The roads haven't
changed a bit, though.

10 percent section around Blue Oak campground, and then the dastardly
19 percent last tenth-of-a-mile or so.

According to the book I wrote in 1982, at least. The roads haven't

It's been a while since I went up North Gate Rd, but it didn't seem like a

Been meaning to post, but have been caught up in a friend's wedding
proceedings. I had a fabulous ride thanks to Jim and Joe, and a great
time at WHQ as well. Loved the Hunq. Feels like my Sam with even
fatter tires. Wore my RBW visor for the first time (Grant was wearing
his to work as well) and really appreciated the cooling breeze in my
hair on the Diablo climbs. The visor is an awesome design, and
decidedly not selling like hotcakes according to Grant. So throw one
in your shopping cart next time, they are only $13, and like many
other Riv products, a bit unconventional, but once you use them, you
wonder how you got along without one.

Saw the new green Sams and a new green Hunq, and while I think the
Sam's orange is about the prettiest bike color ever, the new green may
be the second prettiest. The photos on the riv site don't do it
justice. It's less Kelly and more creamy than it appears on my
(calibrated) monitor at least.
