[RBW] Re: Wet 300k

2014-04-03 Thread stonehog
This was my 2nd 300k. It went better than the first one, so I'm getting
used to these rides? I really enjoyed the company on the sections I was
riding with others. I also enjoy the long reflective time in the saddle.
I'm going to try to do a full series this year. We'll see how it works
out. I need to start doing some intervals to get my times down a bit, but
I feel like the bike is fairly dialed in for now. I definitely want to do
the 3 volcanoes ride! I need to get in the mountains as I've done mostly
rides around Seattle and Bellingham so far.

Here's a short write up on the weekend's
brevet: http://stonehog.com/2014/04/02/bahn-mi-brevet/

Brian, congrats on the finish. Was this your first 300k? I know I've said
this before here but I'll just repeat it. The 300k is probably my favorite
brevet length. Sure, it's hard, I've had my moments on 300ks, but
ultimately, it's just a nice long day in the saddle and depending on speed
and time of year, can be completed without riding at night.

As for Noodles and cloth tape--yup, that's a winning combination. I
recently swapped out my 48cm Noodles for 46s on my LHT and regret it. I'm
too lazy to re-swap them. The 48s will likely go on a bike project I'm
 contemplating.

Are you going to do a full SR series? If you get a chance, look at the
route for SIR's 3 Volcanos 300k. That looks like a dream route. I've ridden
all the roads, just not in a day.

2014-04-01 Thread Tim
Ahh, rando! With 2015 PBP as my goal I'm at it this year. My last brevet was a
300k DNF in 2011. I abandoned after157 miles. I rode 175 miles 2 weeks later
although not a sanctioned brevet. I think it's over 50% mental because at some
point in a ride that long you will almost certainly not feel so great. I'm
registered for 200k and 300k brevets on Long Island in May. Then eyeing 400k
and 600k rides in Boston. I've lost around 35 lbs since Christmas (that's about
10 lbs more than my Hilsen weighs!) and feeling good. The longer rides are
giving me anxiety, especially after the DNF. But as frightening as it is it is
equally exciting!

PBP is such a cool goal! Good luck with your SR series. Sounds like your
of to a great start with all the weight loss.

I'm not able to figure out how to carve the time needed for the super long
events, both training and the actual for score brevets but I have so much
respect for those who do!

That was just before I tightened it up a bit. It was fairly stretched

You're not sitting on the rails when your SAA looks like that? I tried one
a few years back and after 40 miles I was seated on the rails with a light
strip of leather between my bum and the rail. I literally called home and
had a family member meet me at mile 180 of a 600K with my Brooks, which I
re-installed in the parking lot of a Shell station.

Granted, it was a very warm and humid day in SE Texas in May, which I
suppose affected the humidity of the leather under my bum, but still. I
have two of those SAA saddles gathering dust in my garage.

On the positive side, beautiful bar tape Love it.

Fantastic, Brian! There is something meditative about riding in the rain
