[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for helmet/head rain covers?

2015-09-16 Thread Ron Mc
thanks for the heads up on the Gore helmet cover. We rarely get the kind
of soaking rain most people think of as showers. We mostly get flash
monsoons that don't last long but can put down 5-10"/hr. You get caught in
one and the worst thing about it is the runoff from your helmet vents
flooding your eyes. Carrying an emergency helmet cover sounds like a great
idea, and I found one online for $35.

Wool socks work for me in the rain. They keep my feet warm when they get wet.

2015-09-13 Thread Doug Williams
I don't like hoods that block my vision when I'm trying to scan behind me.
I haven't tried it, but I think the Grundens rain hat would not block your
vision.

If you wear a helmet (and maybe you want to if you are mixing it up with
SUV's in the rain) I like this one:

https://www.taigaworks.ca/cart.php?m=product_detail=66

It fits over you helmet, doesn't block you vision, and even has a loop to
attach your red light. I attach my take-a-look mirror to my helmet and the
taiga doesn't interfere with it. I don't always bike with a helmet, mirror,
and red light on my head. But if it is dark and rainy in heavy traffic...it
is time to pull out all the stops.

Doug, a properly fitting/adjusted mountaineering hood moves with the head,
allowing vision when turning my head to look behind. A poorly fitting or
adjusted one does block exactly as you describe.

2015-09-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
Ventile hood on my ventile jacket. If particularly windy, I'll wear my
Tilley had underneath to extend the brim farther out. This system has kept
me dry and happy over multiple days of steady mild-torrential rain where it
rained about half the waking hours, even sweating hard up steep LCG trails
bikepacking. Cotton analogy ventile combo draws the moisture away and I
stay dryer than with anything else I've ever used. Hilltrek's hood fits
over a helmet (at lead my daughter's fit over theirs, I don't wear a
helmet).

On long hot rides I prefer to just let the rain cool my head, but below 60
if its raining I use a Gore Wear helmet cover with neon yellow sides and
effective strips. Adds warmth and visibility.

I wear a Shower's Pass jacket and Foxwear rain pants in similar conditions.
I'll still end up wet or damp from a combination of drip through and sweat,
but I won't be chilled -- and having once been near-hypothermic on a cold,
wet ride without much opportunity for shelter I really prefer warm and
damp! :)

Foxwear is semi-custom rain [and other outdoor] gear made in Salmon, Idaho
by a one-man shop at very reasonable prices -- perfect for me as I have a
long inseam and stock rain pants simply don't do the trick.
