That is odd, since the same fenders fit (albeit tightly) over 29 mm Parigi Roubaix on my Ram, and wider fenders would easily accommodate wider tires. (In fact, I've got a pair of 45 mm Longboards waiting for next rainy season.) I guess there were slight design differences among Rams; I'm glad I got one with more clearance. [RBW] Re: best tires for fendered rambouillet
Two other considerations I haven't seen mentioned, that you might already be aware of: - Toe clip overlap is likely to be pretty severe, if you actually manage to fit fenders over anything bigger than a 28. I have SKS fenders and Roughy Toughies on my 60cm Ram, but find that I need to snug the fender *very* close to the tire to be comfortable with it. I actually thought that the 54cm used 26" wheels, but evidently not. So, with a presumably shorter top tube than mine, it seems like yours would be worse. And adjusting for 33s would just compound the issue. Maybe I'm more sensitive to it than others, though. - Your "Winter" conditions are obviously much different than mine (I'm already buried in snow and ice, and will be for the next 6 months), so I don't know what you need in a tread. I'll say though that, while they're great for asphalt, I'd NEVER consider a Rolly Polly/Roughy Toughy/Jack Brown tread pattern to be a winter tire. After a few good rides, the little waffle pattern pretty much turns into a "slick." The Ram brochures advertised 32 mm tires with fenders and I remember GP writing that Jack Brown's will not fit with fenders. I also remember one poster who was able to rig the fenders to make it work. With hongo fenders my Ram maxis out at 30 mm actual and I run Grand Bois Cerf at 29MM. I think that's the design point for this frame and that's where the bike will perform its best. I'm not sure what kind of winter the OP experiences but I don't think of my much loved ram as a winter bike.
