more than "a"...

Come to think of it, I've never really ridden a completed project.

N+1 where N=the number of bikes you currently own.

By the 7 make it 9 theory I barely qualify as a cyclist with merely 4

Everytime I come across something like this I show it to my wife and
say "see." I thought I had this thing under control a couple of years
ago but the monster showed up once again. 9 with 2 WIP. When ask " why
do you need more than one bike?" I reply "Why do you need more than
one pair of shoes?"

I don't even try to show these things to my wife ( 4 rideable, 3 in
work plus the tandem which doesn't count)
she says "why compare your self to crazy people"

I tell her they are not just to ride, it's my artistic side that I'm
expressing..so now she refers to them as "garage art"

[RBW] Re: this oughta be a motto for this group

2010-01-20 Thread pruckelshaus
I have four:
* Klein mountain bike...honestly, it's never even been really off
road, but it's perfect for riding around the neighborhood and the bike
trails with my kids.
* Rambouillet with Dura Ace 7700 STI triple stuff mostly
* Specialized Allez steel with downtube shifters and nice, fat
tubulars for when I want to get kinky
* "Shopping bike" - Schwinn Prelude frame, parts out of the bin, for
trips to the store.

The "loophole" - a Burly Rock-n-Road tandem that doesn't get ridden
very much because it just doesn't fit me all that well. I should
probably sell it.

And on deck - I'm building a randonneur style frame, 73 parallel
angles, 57cm square, 435mm stays, low BB out of Columbus SPX. I've
got all of the main triangle miters done, will spend this week
cleaning up the tubes and lugs, and will tack braze it next week.
This will replace the 60cm Rambouillet, which is "right sized" per
Riv, but still feels way too big even after a year of riding it. The
sad thing is, even though this is my first frame, I'm already thinking
about the second.

The only bike I would add to this is a true classic of some
sort...along the lines of a full NR Paramount, Cinelli Super Corsa, or
an originally equipped Peugeot PX-10.

2010-01-20 Thread reynoldslugs
Lost track on the number a few years ago. Twenty something, I guess.
There was an anecdote on this list, or maybe Classic Rendezvous, about
a fellow who picked up a frame, was hesitant to bring it home and
face cross examination, so he hid it behind one of the walls. I think
he stuck it behind the stove, and forgot it was there. Some months
later the space was sealed off in a remodel, and there the frame
stayed for several years, til it was rediscovered a decade later.

I moved office space a couple years ago, and found the storage area
included two NOS frames I'd forgotten about- an old Olmo anniversary
edition, and an Orange Rambouillet.

Forgetting that you have a Rambouillet could put you into the "too

Hi everybody; I'm new here. This thread seemed as good a place as any
to introduce myself and dive in.

I 'only' have 3 bikes (going on 4 when my Sam arrives): a
fetishistically over-spec Santa Cruz full boinger that is dreamy for
epic singletrack, but virtually useless for anything else. A Lemond
Buenos Aires go-fast road ride that I got a screamin' deal on (pity it
doesn't fit right). Lastly, I have an 'old' Gary Fisher from '95 that
I'm making into a singlespeed pub crawler. My wife is already asking
which one I'm planning on getting rid of to make room for the Sam. I
just tell her that we have a big garage... For me 4 seems the optimal
number... at least until the next bike...

Me, I'm an aging bike geek from Seattle. Glad to be here.

[RBW] Re: this oughta be a motto for this group

2010-01-21 Thread EricP
I've got four complete and one frame I'm going to donate. (4 =
Atlantis, Hillborne, Surly Long Haul Trucker and Brompton folder.
Donate - old Hardrock frame that LHT replaced)

There are many times when having four seems like too many. Was
actually hoping at the time of getting the Atlantis that eventually
would be down to two. Didn't happen.

Can't tell if it's because of actual need, or just like having
different bikes. The materialist aspect has a strong pull. And the
guilt of materialism has made me question the ownership of so much
"stuff".

At least I'm better with bikes than guitars. Over the years have
owned way too many of those. But seven seems about right. (Yeah,
right. Like I need that many of anything.)

[RBW] Re: this oughta be a motto for this group

2010-01-21 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I may be biased, but you guys have it easy! Given my line of work, I
have bikes coming at me from every direction. Not necessarily fancy
(often solid and good, but not worthy of lust), but every time a
potentially cool bike, part of a potentially cool bike, or just a
potentially cool frame makes itself available, I start scheming and
justifying and rationalizing. And since I always have parts on-hand to
equip many bikes in different ways, it's often hard to say no.

I don't actually know how many bikes I have. Seven, maybe eight
rideable, for sure, just off the top of my head.

possibly be soon enough!

Isn't one cross bike enough? Maybe a couple of wheel sets.

Maybe we should have a bike swap and send some dosh to the 3rd world.

[RBW] Re: this oughta be a motto for this group

2010-01-30 Thread Earl Grey
Hhm,

I only have 3, and spread over 2 continents, and one is supposedly for
sale as part of the Sam Hillborne Aquisition Agreement (but it didn't
sell, hehe). What am I doing wrong? (Okay, plus 2 tandems, but I count
those as my wife's bikes, which evens the count at 3.) Can I tell my
wife I own the fewest bikes on the entire list?

To whit:

1990 Fisher Sphinx monstercross (commuting, group mountain bike rides
where it's usually the only unsuspended bike, loaded touring, fast
road club rides (bit heavy for that, couldn't really take my turn
pulling the paceline for long, now often the loaner bike)

1997 Indy Fab Planet-X (for fast club rides AND off-roading, to allow
to Fisher to sport fenders year-round, but doesn't quite fit 42mm
knobbies; "Shimergo" Veloce/XTR drive train, works great!). This one's
for sale, replaced with:

2009 Sam (don't really do fast club rides anymore; it's pretty much a
much nicer, lugged and lighter Fisher Sphinx, and I'll probably always
have one set up with smooth tires (Jack Browns) and the other with
knobbies (IRC Mythos Slicks 42mm))

I guess my problem is that I really love all-rounders, and just can't
get myself to buy a more specialized bike. And how many all-rounders
does one really need? (Waiting for your creative answers.)

My wife's bikes:

2008 Raleigh mixte "market bike" (came stock with fenders, basket,
kickstand, lugged frame, chain guard, rear drum brake, 5 speed drive
train, and *passanger seat with foot pegs* (for adults!; Sometimes I
take her out to dinner on it.) Bought here in Thailand for about $100
new)

2008 "Tank" mtn tandem (Just says "Tank", made in Taiwan, appears to
be a decent serious mtn tandem frame, clear-coated aluminum with
"tribal flame tattoo" decals and zero BB drop for serious stump
jumping. Set up for touring and mixed road/off-road riding in
Thailand; Pretty much the only tandem we could buy in Thailand, and
was bought sight unseen (meaning, no photo, no spec sheet, no nothing;
we were told "aluminum frame, Avid disc brakes, 9 speed drive train";
almost true: came with crappy Tektro IO brakes, but Avid brake levers,
and it really did have a 9 speed drive train, i.e. one chainring, no
front derailer!)

1993 Ibis Uncle Fester tandem, 26" wheels, set up for road (the Cousin-
It's poor cousin, I mean uncle; same frame, cheaper components: DX
instead of XT; this and the Indy Fab are in storage in the US awaiting
our return).

Gernot

I don't even try to show these things to my wife ( 4 rideable, 3 in
work plus the tandem which doesn't count)
she says "why compare your self to crazy people"

I tell her they are not just to ride, it's my artistic side that I'm
expressing..so now she refers to them as "garage art"

Yep, you have 3 bikes with 1 on the way, perfect. When you have 4 bikes
you'll need to work on the "1 on the way" part though. I'm of the the
perfect number is N+1 crowd.

I suspect you'll love your Sam. I don't own one (yet) myself, making do with
a lovely Quickbeam I took delivery of last December.

Currently besides the QB I've got a Bike Friday folder (which got to visit
Rivendell last year when I was on the mainland), a single speed conversion
of an old steel framed ATB (yep, it's an ATB not an MTB!), and a Giant
hybrid which may become an Xtracycle. I'm thinking Bombadil for the next
