[RBW] Re: vittoria randonneur touring tire?

2010-04-02 Thread JoelMatthews
You do not say whether you have ever ridden a Schwalbe tire.

I, and the many others who have, pay the price for the tire not
because of our simian intelligence level but rather because the tires
have an amazing combination of smooth ride and long life. I know the
prevasive WalMart mentality is that if something can be made cheaply
it must be better. That is not my experience. (heck, why not say
that a Rawland must be as good as a Riv. It's steel and cheaper after
all)

I went Schwalbe after years of riding many other tire brands. My
experience had been you either got a tire that was comfortable to ride
but prone to flats or was durable but felt as though you were riding
on granite. I have now added Grad Bois to my list of nice tires. The
ride of some of their tires is just amazing.

I do not have much experience with Panaracers, but have heard many
great accounts of their merchandise. My understanding is that while
Panaracer uses its molds when making for other brands it does not
always use the same materials.

I have an account with Schwalbe North America so do not buy retail. I
get my Grand Bois from Bicycle Quarterly which I would hardly classify
as a shell game.

Vittoria Randonneur's have plenty of happy users, just jog on over to
Bike Forums.

I for one don't take much stock in price in a indicator of a tires
quality. These days there is no clear indication of what is, and what
is not a quality tire.
I read plenty of dissatisfied Schwalbe and Continental users. The
thing is, there's infinite variables when it comes to someone's
opinion of a tire.
The human phenomena of monkey-see monkey-copy makes reviewing
things rather comical.

I'd try the Randonneur's in a heartbeat and not worry about opinions.
Hey, you can buy 3 of these for the price of many Schwalbe's!

I myself can't see spending $65 on a bike tire. My Michelin truck
tires cost about $80 when I last bought them, as a comparison.

I've had a great ride with Performance Forte Metro-K 35mm tires
about $14 each. There's another 35mm tire they sell(the Gotham), made
by Panaracer, who sells the same thing, minus the reflective strip.
It's called the Crosstown. Performance sells it for $12 other
places sell the Crosstown for more than double that. So, I don't put
much stock anymore in "more expensive" = a better tire.
Retail is like a giant shell game. sell it for what you can and
hope you can keep the game going :)

2010-04-01 Thread JoelMatthews
I am skeptical of claims that a tire can deliver a good ride and
amazing longevity at a price significantly below competitors that
specialize in one or the other.

Tire quality is primarily a function of raw materials used to build
the tire. Quality materials typically cost more than lessor quality
materials.

Labor costs in Germany and Japan are high, but then tire making is
highly automated. In any event, Schwalbe manufactures its tires in
Indonesia. There is a lot of competition in the tire market. I doubt
very much that Grand Bois, Schwalbe and Continental are expensive
because there owners all decided they would get rich off unsuspecting
cyclists.

I haven't tried any of the the Randonneuring models( they have about
10+versions) but other Vittorias I've ridden have not lasted that
long.
I was wondering how true to size they are. They do make a few Rando
models in 40mm width that I've looked at.
