[RBW] Re: which riv should I sell?

2012-12-05 Thread numbnuts
Hey All,
I know this won't come as anything new to people here, but I personally
have never sold a frame or a bike I didn't miss. To sell either an Atlantis
or a Hunq has got to hurt.

I own neither, but do own (or have owned) similar bikes and I would sell
the Hunq. Then I would make the Altlantis do everythingincluding
perhaps the ability to swap out entire (at least bars and controls) in a
hurry and except the limitations. My 2 cents.

IMO if you must sell one make it the Hunq. I have both a Roadeo and an
Atlantis. If I could only have one bike it would be the Atlantis. "You can
do anything on an Atlantis". Because you can.

Loathe as I am to compel anyone to sell a Riv, I just recently pared down
to one bike, and have thus far lived to tell the tale.

Me, I'd keep the Atlantis, if only because I think the range of versatility
dressing up and down is ever so slightly wider.

Tough spot.

I would say stick with the Atlantis for its versatility, but how sad to see
a Hunq go. Since your goal is the longer tour which I assume will take you
on some pavement the Atlantis seems like the one.

Great news to hear a Riv is being kept. The secret is to consider selling
it, and consider it *so* seriously, that when you decide *not* to sell it,
it *feels* like you just "bought" yourself a Rivendell!

[RBW] Re: which riv should I sell?

2012-12-01 Thread dougP
Being an Atlantis owner makes me somewhat biased in that direction.
However, either one can function for your purposes, and it sounds like you
have each set up so they don't overlap too much. My Atlantis is also set
up with 40 mm Marathon Supremes and I don't hesitate to take it off road.
If you can only keep one, I'm voting for the Atlantis.

With the Hunq being newer, it may command a better price. BUT even a year
old Rivendell will have lost some value. I'm in the "cut costs elsewhere"
camp. Ask yourself "At today's costs for college, how much will the bike
buy?". OTH, maybe there's money leaking out in little dribs'n'dabs that
don't seem like much but add up to a hefty sum over time.

BTW, Manny is right: Rivendells are so versatile some of us manage to get
by with only one. While I have 2 other bikes, they are both from the 80s
and have long since earned a quiet retirement. The Atlantis is my ride 99%
of the time.

Oh no! We need a plan! Or Grant can't retire!

If XO-1s now command exotic prices, think of what a clean Atlantis
frame will bring in, say, 2025.

To the question: I'd say, sell only if (1) you are financially
desperate, or (2) you don't like the frame. But if you flout these

If you still need to sell one, keep the one that will do more of what you

Do you still have both kidneys? :) But seriously I would echo Mike's
suggestion of really trying hard to cut costs elsewhere. Both are
versatile bikes but if you set them up differently they can really
complement each other, and having a spare can be crucial in the event of a
temporary service interruption (broken cable or chain, stuff wearing out
while you weren't looking, or other unforeseen mechanical gremlin).

[RBW] Re: which riv should I sell?

2012-12-01 Thread RJM
I would say that if you ride these bikes and enjoy them and they both are
different enough that the purposes don't overlap too much, try to find some
money someplace else. (I am currently contemplating another Riv bike
purchase)

If you are stuck on selling them, I would keep the Atlantis. It is just
such a cool bike.

[RBW] Re: which riv should I sell?

2012-12-01 Thread Mike
I say keep the Atlantis. It's a fantastic, proven, versatile and
classic bike. But really, considering how costly Rivs are and that
they are only going to go up in price, do what you can to cut cost
elsewhere.
