Re: [RBW] Saluki at 2200 feet
On vacation in 2005, we stayed at Smugglers Inn. I pedaled my Trek Navigator over the Notch and then down into Stowe, and then another day down to the trail along the Lamoille River. Beautiful in the Summer. I rode the bike as well on the snowshoe paths, but man was that tough work! Nice pictures! Re: [RBW] Saluki at 2200 feet
My Ram has a 44/30 too, though with a 14-23 7 speed (14-15-16-17-18-20-23). But most of my hills are short (1 mile or less), if steep, and if longer, pretty gradual. And I am a masher. Re: [RBW] Saluki at 2200 feet
No CD on this bike, but I do ride a 44/30 & 11-28 on the Rambouillet. This one is 48/34/26 with a 12/27 cassette. On the Ram the 30/28 allows me to hold a decent cadence in 7/9 % grades for 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile. I'm OK on short ramps of 15-16 % which are common here, but after that I start to suffer more than I want to. That one extra gear really helps on these longer climbs. Good on yer, mate! I hope I can do something similar at your age (I'm 58). What gearing? Do I see a compact double? A great ride and a great goal! I haven't been there in years but love that road- especially coming up from the Stowe side. Good luck! Michael, that is a great goal! Be sure to make a photograph when you reach the top on your 70th. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Saluki at 2200 feet
One of my long time rides takes me up to Smugglers Notch. I've done this 45 mile ride from my home pretty much once a year for the past thirty years and one of my life goals is to do it for my 70th birthday, 15 months from now. The climb has 1800 feet of climbing in a 9 mile stretch, but 1000 feet of that comes in the last 3 miles of steady 7-10%, and most of the rest in the first mile. I'm about 25% slower now than I was at the turn of the millennium and this time I had to walk up the 75-100 meters of 20%+ grade, but I made it, and am feeling pretty good about that, even though it seems clear I will need to loose 20 lbs if I want to ride up non stop a year from now.. Ms Saluki is quite comfortable going back down at 45 mph. https://www.icloud.com/photostream/#A2Grq0zwGOWHQK It's hard to see altitude!
