Re: [RBW] Sew own frame bags?

2014-01-14 Thread Pam Ellen Hudson
I really have enjoyed following the Colette Patterns blog, and Sarai has a
wonderful
post on materials for her "cooper bag" and how to source resources here (great
tips on waxed canvas)

http://www.coletterie.com/sewalongs/bag-making-supplies-and-resources

Also, she has tutorials on how to sew with waxed canvas, etc. I know other
sewer/biker bloggers but I find Colette's resources
on her bag really really easy to follow. She lives in Portland so she's in a
good area for it.

Re: [RBW] Sew own frame bags?

2014-01-13 Thread Patrick Moore
I don't really care much about frame bags (I need my water bottles) but I
will be very interested to learn how the Krampus handles rough terrain and
how it rides, generally speaking.

I've used "29er"wheels shod with tires from 55 mm to 65 mm and, while I've
enjoyed them all, I'm still debating the merits and tradeoffs of
thinner/lighter versus fatter/heavier.

[RBW] Sew own frame bags?

2014-01-13 Thread Anne Paulson
I ordered my new Krampus next week. Night blue pearl.

And I want to take it camping. So I need carrying capacity. So I'm
thinking about sewing a frame bag.

f you have done that, what fabric did you use and where did you buy
it? I'm looking at 1050 denier coated ballistics nylon or 330 or 500
denier Cordura from Seattle Fabrics, or 840 denier coated ballistics
nylon or 500 denier Cordura from Quest Outfitters. I definitely want
something waterproof, but I'm not sure how to choose between weight
and strength.

Also, if you have made a frame bag, how wide did you make it? Did you
flare it at the front? What did you use for padding for the edges, if
anything? How does it attach to the bike?

My bike is going to be a size small. The Krampus has a sloping top
tube, so that means a tiny little triangle, and lots of seatpost
showing. That suggests room for another triangle-shaped bag above the
top tube, in the triangle between top tube and seatpost. Has anyone
tried that?
