Interesting about the insurance... Curious if you have a specific rider for
your bike(s) or just general homeowner coverage.

In glad you got it back and have that option. Its a tough call given the
one-of-a-kind nature of the bike. If you keep it the bike has even more
'story' behind it now, it's famous and infamous!

Good luck with your decision, let us know how it turns out.

Tony

Re: [RBW] Stolen Royal H Mixte Ventura

2013-08-17 Thread Pam Ellen Hudson
All,

Thanks for your comments - thanks for the thoughts - - I'm on a road trip to
Seattle for work/fun. Taking my bromptom.

I must agree with all commenters -- the correct thing to do would have call the
Police -- which I did do -- three times. I also asked them to send a parol
car. I've never heard from them yet -- even my case officer.
The second owner cannot own title to the stolen bike. I know this but was
prompted by my SO to get the bike back. I wouldn't recommend meeting with
third parties to others. She saw my offer on craigslist for reward after
buying it at a good price at the swap meet from a sketch fellow. Also, wheels
and seat couldn't be removed -- I have unusual metric bolt on them. and the
seat post/stem is a little damaged from the thieves trying to pry it off.
That maybe why it came back plus I have had serious talks (no kidding) with the
pawn shops in the area and the law of bailment and licensure. I also know the
local bike shops pretty well.

Agree whole-heartedly with the idea of community support. When I see a stolen
bike in the area -- especially Rivs -- it kills me.

Another note is my insurance company still wishes to pay the claim if I donate
the bike -- they are worried about liability and frame damage. Trying to
decide. It's a good place to be.

Thanks for all the commenters. If you are down in Ventura give me an email.
I'd love to meet up and ride. I missed the Ocean Air Cycles ride a few months
back.

I'm on my way to Portland today.

Warm regards, Pam

Glad you got the bike back...I guess I could see the person who bought it
at the swap wanting to recover her $400...but that is no $400 bike...
Myself, I'd suspect it was a hot bike.

My advice? Lock up the bikes in the garage and lock the garage..., better
yet, keep the Royal in the house. It's probably a good thing you cancelled
the claim since claims can ultimately result in increased premiums or ,
worse, insurer refuses coverage.

All in all a happy ending, I think...but too bad about the tools and bags
and the $500.

2013-08-16 Thread Johnny Alien
Glad you got your bike back!! You should have worked through the police. As
long as you can prove ownership then you owe those people nothing as they
bought stolen merchandise. In instances of possession of stolen goods they are
out the money they spent. Their recourse would be to go after the person they
bought it from. Entirely their problem. Plus with the police involved they
could get information about the seller/ likely thief.

If at all possible, I'd have police handle it and not paid. Trafficking in
stolen goods is trafficking in stolen goods and should not be reimbursed,
rewarded, etc. I mean, if I suspend all reasonable sense, I can get big screen
tvs for pennies on the dollar, never ask about provenance, and ask for my money
back when rightful owner wants them back. But I'm not judging you for your

Re: [RBW] Stolen Royal H Mixte Ventura

2013-08-16 Thread oldmangabe
I agree with people that being forced to take part in the cycle of stolen
property makes one feel like you are perpetuating the whole deal. I guess
there are some key points that are left unclear or unaddressed before I can
pass my own judgment on people, actions, or choices that were directly
involved in this scenario.
1-how did the original owner become aware that X bought the bike at a swap
meet?
2-How did X come to know that the bike was the owners bike?
3-Why did X bother contacting the owner that they had recovered the bike?
4-Why do we assume that X was in on the whole scheme, or why they are a
willing part of the cycle of stolen and fenced goods?
5-Yes, it is too bad that the original owner had to pay out money to get
their bike back but, THEY GOT THEIR BIKE BACK. True, it was not a complete
recovery, and that can add salt to the wound.

Now for my editorial and context:
It sounds like the original owner got thier bike back because someone at a
swap meet noticed a very nice bike for too little money. They bought it,
and then checked the forums etc., to see what was the what. At which point
they appear to have contacted the original legal owner of the bike saying
they had recovered it. More often than not, when one is forced to recover
a bike in this manner, one ends up having to pay out of pocket, and it is a
sign of respect and thanks to reimburse the money to the person who again,
more often than not, is trying to help. It is far from fair, or perfect,
but unless one has the time or privilege/luck to work with the police, then
working with a fellow citizen outside of official protocols and reimbursing
them for getting your bike out of the hands of a thief or fence is
unfortunately what it costs to get reunited with one's beloved bike. Also,
don't think that it is easy to physically take possession of a stolen bike
either. Unless one is in a position of strength and can safely physically
take possession of the bike, then one is back to paying for it. Physical
force recovery is exceedingly rare, and quite risky. Imagine doing this in
the middle of a swap meet or flea market by yourself or with a partner.
From personal experience, unless the police catch someone in the act of
stealing or fleeing with stolen property, then you can't really expect too
much help from one's local police force. Recovery of stolen property is
low on their list of priorities (regardless of whether it is a bike, car,
computer, etc). Again, this is not fair nor right, and generally speaks to
the overload and shortcomings of our community police forces. That is a
completely different topic that is beyond the purview of this forum.

All of this doesn't mean that the original owner cannot be angry about the
whole situation. Or that we as a community of cyclists cannot be incensed
by the lack of support from the law and police agencies, but there is more
to all this than fairness or the law, right or wrong. It unfortunately is
not a black and white binary currently. There are some cities whose police
forces and cycling communities are beginning to be proactive in dealing
with bicycle theft, but there are some pretty big structural issues that
need to be addressed first before any real change can occur. In the end,
the owner got their one-of-a-kind bike back, which I think is great.

Best,

Gabe

immediately saw it gone. . .

If anyone come across it please let me know -- Ventura Police Department has
also been notified, and I have notified all the bike shops! It's really one
 of a kind. . . I'm sick about it.

I bought the frame from bike blogger Lovely Bike a year ago and have used it
for rides of 30+ miles. We have kept it in the house off and on -- but live
in a very safe neighborhood. I've never had a bike stolen as an adult.I
also have a new Acorn bag on the front. S

The police believe it is carnies -- we have a park and ride about 4 blocks
from the house and the fair is in town and we are, apparently, in the middle
of a crime spree. I do have insurance but I am still heartbroken.

My build (although I have cream delta cruisers on it now):

[RBW] Stolen Royal H Mixte Ventura

2013-08-08 Thread Pammie
Hi all,

I love reading this forum and have a similar type of hand built bike - a
Royal H Mixte with custom Peter White Son Dynamo wheelset. . . . It was
stolen out of the garage this week while I was in DC. My partner thinks it
could be that left the garage door open for just a few hours before going
to bed one evening but it would not have been long. When I arrived home, I
immediately saw it gone. . .

If anyone come across it please let me know -- Ventura Police Department
has also been notified, and I have notified all the bike shops! It's
really one of a kind. . . I'm sick about it.
