Re: [RBW] Ultegra Wheel Hubs with Seal Bearings

2012-02-06 Thread Jeremy Till
Hah! Glad it worked out.

As a mechanic, that's one of the things that I actually appreciate about
the relative ubiquity of Shimano products...they've stuck with traditional
axles and bearing technology, so it's always possible to service them.
Even their "sealed" MTB hubs are just cup and cone with large seals fitted
over them, and man do they work well. On my touring bike, I have a 9spd LX
hub that came stock on the bike in 2002. I opened it up for the first time
around the end of 2010, and by the looks of it I could have gone longer
without overhauling them...there was still fresh grease in there!

Hah!

I see says the blind man.

I asked the google, found and RTFM the FM.
Not so new fangled as I was assuming - I'm happy now cause I know how to
work on these.

This new fangled stuff is going to take me some getting used to.

Ultegra hubs are cup and cone. I overhaul and replace the balls about every
~10K miles, though they haven't really needed it that soon.

[RBW] Ultegra Wheel Hubs with Seal Bearings

2012-02-05 Thread jimD
I'm used to 'old school' cone & cup bearings.
How long do the sealed bearing on these modern Ultegra hubs go before they need
replacing or servicing.
Mine have about 15k miles on them.
