[RBW] Waitin' on my Riv--debating on Drops versus Albatross

2013-11-18 Thread Dennis Hogan
Hi Tom...I am somewhat of a lurker too but have a few posts. I just changed the
handlebars on my 2 yr old AHH from the Grand Bois Randonneur
Bars from Compass/Bicycle Quarterly to the One-on-One Midge bar. I know this is
a rather unusual choice for the Rivers but so far so good( approx. 300km on
them)
For me they have as many diff hand positions as the GB's and are wider in the
drops with still good access to the brakes and bar-end shifters.
No matter what the choice. I expect you'll love the ride

2013-11-18 Thread Patrick Moore
Just for another opinion, I switched from the Midge to a 44 cm rando (B135)
on the Fargo and was very surprised to find that the Nittos are just about
(not exactly quite) perfect for my type of riding.

I found the Midge better than most of the other off road drop bars, though.

Someone on this or the iBob list was looking for a GB Rando bar

If you're spending 98% of the time on the road, get the Noodles and some
Grand Bois tires. $0.02.

been in to chat with Grant, Will, Jared, Vince and others on several
occasions (and Rich built me some swt wheels for my current ride). I
even got to borrow a Sam for two days (which has got to seal the deal with
 99.9% of buyers).

So the question I've been pondering--as so many Riv converts probably
do--is do I start with drop bars or should I cut to the chase and get the
Albatross (the clear fave of most staffers)? I'm also still debating which
tires since I expect to spend 98% of my time on the road.

What say you, RBW Owners Bunch?

 Thanks,

[RBW] Waitin' on my Riv--debating on Drops versus Albatross

2013-11-17 Thread Pondero
I just switched from noodles to albatross for my Hilsen after years of nothing
but drop bars. Like you, I was inspired to try something new by some of the
photos I've seen of staff bikes. Why not experiment a little? I tried a
couple of different configurations and thought the albatross bars wouldn't work
for me. Then I found the right balance of reach, height, and bar angle. I'm
having big fun with these bars now. No plans to change back anytime soon.

You can always go back to drops if the experiment doesn't work out. I might
even by your discarded albas for my Quickbeam.

2013-11-17 Thread Curtis McKenzie
I really enjoy the Albas on my AHH. Switched from noodles after about 500
miles. Have over a thousand on the Albas and enjoy them more and more. You
may experiment with not much cost. I fine tinkering with the fit part of
the enjoyment. I also trust in Kevin.

Congrats and have fun,

Curtis

It is my personal preference. They work well for me using Sam as an All
Rounder country bike. Sam gets ridden on the road at a good clip, on dirt
trails without issues, and even gets dragged up the Torrey Pines loop with
 Hugh, Mike, and Curtis.

I also ride drops on a carbon fiber, WTB drops on a Salsa mountain bike,
and straight bars on a full suspension mountain bike. I try to set up each
bike for its purpose and in a manner that benefits me most in using it.
All of these configurations were derived over some time with change-outs
 to see what would work

I would choose the Albas again, in either standard or inverted
configuration for Sam. I would probably choose them for an AHH or
Atlantis; I would have to test them to be sure. Oddly enough, I never
would have dreamed that I could be comfortable over long distance on
shellac cloth bound bars, but I am. My neutral position is usually with
hands on the bars, just ahead of the brake levers. I don't seem to miss
cork, gels, and gushy stuff, but I do wear padded gloves. If I need a more
aero position, I move forward into the hooks. More upright is the cork
 grips behind the brakes.

 Hope that helps.
