I haven't ridden that section but the Adventure Cycling Association has a
route map that takes you from Reno, Sacramento, to SF. You should check
there because it may be a good option.

Carl:

I have a 200-kilometer route from Davis (just west of Sacramento) to San
Francisco via Napa, Sonoma, Petaluma, Fairfax, and Sausalito.

My friends and I have ridden this many times. The ride from Davis to San
Francisco typically takes us about 12 hours, including stops for breakfast and
lunch. I made a video of the 2011 ride:

Otto,

For what it's worth -- Sacramento itself is a worthwhile destination, but
riding from Sac to San Francisco would not be at the top of my list if I
were a visitor. Sacramento is in a very flat river valley, it will be
quite hot, and I don't consider that area particularly scenic.

On the other hand, western Marin County and western Sonoma County hold some
of the most beautiful riding in the US, including the last 33% of Eric's
route. If you would like further thoughts, please let me know.

2014-07-15 Thread Kurt Manley

If I was doing it and had the time I'd do it in two days taking the basic
route that Eric mentioned. You could take a direct route from Sac~SF but it
wouldn't be a very nice ride in my opinion. If you head through Napa and
Marin you're riding through some incredibly beautiful areas. It could be
done in a day but I like to have time to stop and explore, take pictures,
ect. so I'd plan on camping along the way.
have fun!

I plan to submit this as a perm sometime. For now, it's just a fun ride.

BTW, this route has been much improved in the past few years with the widening
of Hwy 12. There is now a nice, wide bike lane along the highway between Napa

Otto,

I did that ride back in 2012 and split it over two days. My halfway point
was a family members, but there are plenty of options in petaluma, I
imagine. I would have to say the second day was just tremendous and
amazing, but the first day provided a nice contrast. I grew up in the Bay

wasn't until I rode it on my bike that I really understood the terrain and
its beauty.

2014-07-16 Thread Anne Paulson
Replying to this now that I'm back from the Moot, and I have to agree with
Peter. I've ridden from the Sacramento area to Napa several times. It's not
terrible, but I wouldn't voluntarily schedule a two day tour with that as
one of the days. It will be hot, flat and windy.

One can spend two happy days touring in Marin and Sonoma. One can spend two
happy days touring in the Santa Cruz mountains south of San Francisco.
Either of those would be my pick over riding from Sacramento to San
Francisco. If I were in Sacramento with a bike loaded with touring gear and
two days to tour, the first thing I'd do would be to hop on the train to
San Jose. Roll on/roll off bike service!

Thanks, Anne. I didn't want to sound overly negative. You hit the nail on
the head.

My version of Anne's train to San Jose would be to figure out how to get to
Santa Rosa (bus? friend?), then ride something along the lines of
Occidental to Russian River then south toward San Francisco. Depending on
one's ambition and taste, there is some awfully nice country in the hills
to the north of the Russian River, but that would likely involve more than
two days. I found some roads in the area of Annapolis that were magic --
worn two-lanes winding in and out of vineyards, and down into creek
valleys, with cars every fifteen minutes. Some tough climbs (18%-ish), but
short.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pbridge1300/9954953633/ et seq

My preference for the North Bay is probably the simple result of knowing it
better than I know the South Bay. And it's less densely populated.

H ... Not really. Sure, it's hot in the summer, and the first 25 miles or
so are mostly flat, but after that the course is very lumpy, with a number of
minor and major climbs. Here's the route in GPS, which estimates about 6,700

Re: [RBW] Planning to ride Sacramento - San Fransisco

2014-07-18 Thread Anne Paulson
I like both the North Bay and the South Bay for touring. It's true that
Silicon Valley is more densely populated than Marin, but you don't tour in
the valley: you ride up in the hills, and you ride on the coast. It's quick
to get away from the densely populated areas, provided you are willing to
climb.

Occidental to the Russian River and then south makes a great tour. I've
done it numerous times, and enjoyed it every time. There are several routes
from Occidental, all good: south on the Bohemian Highway, up Coleman Valley
Road to the coast, down to the Russian River and down the coast, down to
the Russian River then up again on Willow Creek and down Coleman Valley
either east or west. Once you reach Point Reyes Station, again you have
options: Sir Francis Drake, Highway 1 to Bolinas-Fairfax, Highway 1 to
Panoramic, or even going through the Golden Gate National Recreation Area
if you have wide enough tires. The area from the Russian River to the
Golden Gate Bridge is my favorite spot for tours.

There are several good places to camp along the coast. However, do not make
the mistake I made Monday, and show up at Steep Ravine without a
reservation hoping to be able to camp. Bad plan. I was turned away and
ended up having to ride back up to Pantoll (on Mt. Tam). Nothing like
another 1800 feet of climbing when you thought you were done for the day.
