2019-04-01 Thread Patrick Moore
I'll be sure to choose a modern helmet over a hairnet when I whack myself
over the head with an Indian club.

I'd rather say a prayer. (And I do, sharing The Deacon's proclivities. At
any rate, a brief prayer looks better than helmet hair and is guaranteed
-Amen! - more effective than an herbal necklace.)

Re: [RBW] Re: To Helmet or not

2019-04-01 Thread S
I don’t think anyone here believes a helmet offers a magical level of
protection in a serious crash. But as I and others have observed in this
thread, a helmet absolutely can keep your face off the blacktop. As I went
skidding along the ground in my last bad crash, I was grateful it was the side
of the helmet and not my face that was doing the skidding. And if you wear
glasses, a helmet can save them from smashing and sending plastic or glass
shards into your eyes. That’s nice as well. Also, helmets are so light and
vented these days that comfort seems a weak argument against wearing a helmet.

Having broken multiple bones in multiple crashes I am under no illusions as to
my fragility on a bike. Plenty of other parts can break besides my head, so
plopping a helmet on doesn’t make me into an instant daredevil. Helmets aren’t
a 100% solution but they do mitigate damage to a degree and for me that degree
is sufficient.

I was the Workshop Chair for the 1974 Great Eastern Rally in
Poughkeepsie NY.  The MSR bicycle helmet was only weeks away from
introduction, and a friend who was involved in its development put on a
workshop about it.  After comparing it to the leather hairnet racing
helmets of the day, he concluded his presentation by putting the helmet
on, picking up an Indian Club and whacking himself over the head with
it.  He then offered the Indian Club to the audience members and asked
if any of them "would care to try that with your leather hairnet."   Not
one single taker...

All of the below, but principally because I don't like doing something when
I see no good reason for it -- per my earlier posts. I often wonder if
there *are* good reasons, but I haven't seen them yet. I'm still weighing
the question and hoping for more evidence.

As far as I know, wearing a helmet is like tying a little bag of scent or
herbs around your neck to ward off the plague.

I am very pleasantly surprised that this thread has remained so civil. I
was even civil to Garth! (Pulling your chain, Garth!)

Re: [RBW] Re: To Helmet or not

2019-04-01 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Eric, I think the idea is “glimpse cognition recognition” (a technical term I
just made up). Riding down a trail, I am always scanning ahead, scouting my
line of travel as I impliment it. I don’t identify most trees as I pass, but I
do notice branches sticking out that effect my line and adjust accordingly.
Similarly with people walking down the road. I asses from a glimpse how much
space I will give them. Child(ren), dog, or group? A lot of space. Individual
lost in thier own world? A lot of space. Someone who sees me and waves or I
recognize? Less space.

Drivers do the same thing, and have developed a bias, so the theory goes,
against racing mentality cyclists. If I don’t LOOK at a GLANCE like a racer,
they give me more room. I have long experienced this. I get even more room when
I take the right wheel track on the road and wave and smile.

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Re: To Helmet or not

2019-04-01 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Given that there’s so much concern out there about whether motorists notice
cyclists at all, it’s nice to see that some drivers (see item #5) pay so much
attention that they discern whether we’re wearing a helmet and adjust passing
distances accordingly. I wish that was the case, but I don’t think it is.

Dear friends,

This is a fascinatingly humble and civil thread! ❤️

Two summers ago I decided to stop wearing a helmet after I realized that
mine was about 10 years old and I'd been told that they should be replaced
every 3 years. My B.S.-o'meter went off and since then I've been working on
gathering info about helmets: what they were designed to do, what tests
have been done to prove they work, and whether or not helmet mandates, such
as the one in Australia, are having an impact on bike-related injuries,
concussions, or fatalities. Here's my doc with lots of notes, quotes, and
links.

2019-04-01 Thread Patrick Moore
I am pretty sure that I pay more attention to my riding when riding fixed,
and while riding sans helmet. Can't say I feel out of place, though.

Danny MacAskill is pretty amazing, but I wonder how many trial (heh heh)
runs and editing led up to that very fun video. Did he really do that hay
bale trick in one go?

Leah, you should point The Clem Rider to any one of Danny MacAskill's
videos. Arguably the most talented trick bike rider out there. He wears a
helmet, so if The Clem Rider wants to be REALLY cool like Danny, he should
wear a helmet! Heck, get him a helmet cam too! Of course, this may give
him some ideas you'd rather he not get.

For example: Danny MacAskill’s Wee Day Out

You can thank me later :)

I agree that was a good presentation. Although of course there are no stats
available on "the odds" or "the consequences." Which I believe was one of
Edwin's points.

One situation where I would heartily recommend helmet use: when bringing up
this topic on iBoB. Nice to give people the space to express their views
without too much direct judgement.

Edwin,
You have perfectly presented logic, stats, comparisons, and whimsy to cover all
the bases of Helmet use IMHO. Free will allows us each to make make the best
individual choice for “ourselves” based on are willingness to accept the odds
and consequences.
Thank you all for remaining civil with this polarizing topic.

Leah: I can’t resist to point out that it seems a fitting helmet ⛑ for you :
(Nut Case ), but also stylish, happy, and noticeable.

Personally here is my helmet philosophy.
Motorcycling Alway: Ridden for 33+ years on roads with cars, trucks, at high
speed and ALWAYS wear a full face modular helmet (Nolan brand highly
recommended).
Bicycling with children: I always rode with a helmet when my children were
introduced to biking through them becoming teenagers.
On organized sponsored group rides: I followed their rules and wore a helmet.
Ceased attending during the last decade or so.
On relaxing individual rides in retirement on bike paths, to the beach, running
errands, exploring bike infrastructure in neiboring cities (Never wear a
helmet).
When encountering families while out JUST RIDING I frequently compliment their
bike and or helmet to promote the joys of riding. I have even asked some
parents if they wanted me to show them or help them adjust a helmet to better
fit and protect anyone wearing one.

Great food for thought  regardless. As many have presented it is important to
protect oneself and that mellon. TBI are serious and something I would not
wish on anyone nor the responsibility that comes along to their family members
who need to become caregivers.

Well, that's true, but if you go down and slide on the side of your head
instead of on the side of your helmet -- as I did in 2008 when my front
wheel got caught in the crack between two lanes of concrete paving in
the traffic circle going around Mount Vernon -- the gouges that look
like being raked by bear claws will be on your head instead of on the
side of your helmet, and every day is going to be a bad hair day from
then on for the rest of your life.

Re: [RBW] Re: To Helmet or not

2019-03-30 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Those gulls have been busy on your helmet, Leah! Grin.

Great helmet and great color and great non-racer, everyday look!

I shifted to wearing red. It is not the utility worker/bike racer flourescent,
but the human eye ALWAYS sees it. I first noticed this with the red winged
blackbird. I could tell them from regular black birds or crows out of the
corner of my eye without even trying. And that’s just a wee bit a red at the
wing. Sunny, rainy, foggy, doesn’t matter. The brain just registers red. That
it will be fun, playful poka-dot red when they look at it will help, then
they’ll see you dressed in non-racer cloths, and that will help them see you as
a person on a bike and that is all helpful.

Enjoy! Though, if you need the dog clippers, I only use mine every two months
or so. We could co-op them. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick
