Well done. I'm always proud of wearing out a tire.

2013-04-14 Thread cyclotourist
Andy, the Nomads are working out as really good tires for
me.No
complaints other than being a bit squirrely. Not sure if that's due to
their being so wide, or that I'm underinflating them.
That said, the point I wanted to make is that they are relatively thin. I
haven't had any problems, but I'd rather have something thicker on a
multi-day tour or even commuting. Esteban toured on
themand
they held up fine, so YMMV.

Re: [RBW] Re: Wrong Kind of Tire Tread

2013-04-14 Thread cyclotourist
35psi.

Hard to explain... I just don't feel as in control as with 33-35mm tires.
Have to adjust slow-speed line more often. Can't ride hands-free at high
speed (still okay at medium). Fast downhill left-right turn transition
feels much less solid. I think raising the pressure would deal with some of
this (had similar issues with 33.3 JB's until I raised psi) but that
negates the benefits of fat tires.

So still playing with them and like a lot, but at this point, high
volume/low pressure has some trade offs.

Cheers,
David

David:

The Marathon Supreme in 40 mm starts to feel "mushy" around 40 psi, and
I'll guess the MS is stiffer than the Nomads. I generally run 50 front /
60 rear, and add 10 psi for a tour load. I arrived at these values after
my usual over-thinking and experimentation on the issue.

Re: [RBW] Re: Wrong Kind of Tire Tread

2013-04-14 Thread cyclotourist
I'm slowing working up the pressure... started @ 45/30, now @ 50/35.
Probably going to flirt with 50/40 for next round.

Marathons of any variety are definitely stiffer that the Nomads. I'd say
the Nomads might even be a little flexier than Jack Browns. Possibly even
in Eroica territory, but with wire beads. I want to try out a set of 35mm
ones as well for just that reason!

Cheers,
David

Re: [RBW] Re: Wrong Kind of Tire Tread

2013-04-16 Thread Steven Frederick
I know what you're talking about--I've had this problem a couple of times
with fatter (38+) tires. If I run the front pressure too low, it feels
darty when turning--the front dives into the turn too quickly and feels
unstable. Tracking in a straight line is affected, too--it comes off it's
line too easily and feels unstable. Usually adding 5-10psi is enough to
resolve it without too much impact on comfort...
