2009-12-07 Thread pixelFiend
I don't post often here, but I have to say what awesome workmanship this is
in PVC. Looks great Derek!

I've started a new robotics project and have been exploring using the grey
PVC for the frame and some structural parts. It's been great so far. I'll
need to do some pocketing in some places to lighten it a bit because this is
very heavy stuff, but very easy to work with, cuts and routs well, and is
very rigid. I'm impressed with the nice bends Derek was able to get. :)
Good stuff.

I've gotten my PVC sheet from Industrial Plastic Supply in Anaheim, CA:

http://www.indplastic.com/index.cfm?id=%3C!id!%3E&fuseaction=browse&pageid=61

They offer several different sizes and lots of choices for thicknesses, and
are a great company to deal with. Their regular prices are very close to the
sale prices from freckleface.com, but offer free shipping with an order of
$120 or more. I've used them for all my plastics purchases for the past few
years and have been very happy.

Also, I have a pair of those Globe motors as well. They were offered through
eBay at one time, and later skycraft surplus had them. the R2 Builders Club
was using them as a possible choice for leg rotation to achieve the 2-3-2
extension of the center leg, but the vertical forces are too great for the
shallow gear teeth. They would be well-suited to your application though,
since they were initially made to turn satellite dishes like a turntable. If
anyone wants one (or both) I'd let them go for $45 each, plus shipping.
Email me directly if interested.

Derek,
Looking good my friend. The rotate motor, did that come from
surplus center? My motor is rated at 24 volts, looks just like yours.
You could still run it at 18 volts without too much trouble. Keep up
the good work.

PVC252448

Since I wanted to get the most bang for my shipping buck, I bought 3 sheets
of 1/2" and 2 sheets of 1/4".
I also bought a box of cutoffs on their specials page that has various
cutoff pieces in sizes up to 1" thick.
I used 1.5 sheets of the 1/2" and a partial sheet of the 1/4" on the KV-2.
I'll probably end up using the other
part of the 1/4" sheet to complete the turret. The only down side is cost,
but
very little of the cutoffs are going to waste. I have maybe enough waste to
fill a 2"x2" square. The upsides
outway the cost IMHO with no splintering, cuts with wood tools, pretty
easily formed into complex shapes, high
strength, no waterproofing needed, and no issues with dealing with warped
pieces (when puchased new
of course). I love it! Anything I build in the future will be made from
PVC. I have enough material left over
to re-make the M113 chassis with PVC. That will be the next project. I'm
going to see what colors Plasticote
comes in and use that to paint it. I have used that stuff on other plastic
projects and it's very hard to scratch off.

Don't think they are needed. Even with no glue, this thing is STIFF,
strong, and heavy. The screws holding it together will also stay in. Once
you glue PVC to PVC, it creates a very strong bond (properly prepped of
course). The PVC will break before the bond will. I will be adding a brace
or two in the motor area. The floor plate is 1/2" rather than 1/4" as in my

Well, since I told Frank I was too busy to finish getting my designation for
the M113 in order

I thought I would share what I was doing this weekend. My Type 1 PVC sheets
in 1/4" and 1/2"
arrived on Friday so I sat down Friday night for about two hours and drafted
some plans on my
office type desk in my garage for the KV-2. I basically used my T-Square to
turn my desk into a
drafting table (no computer needed or fancy software... :) ). Saturday about
mid-day I started
building and 48 hours later I wanted to share the results. It is made from
PVC sheet so the gray
color is not paint. It's just mocked up at this point, none of the pieces
are glued together, but I
would say it's a pretty damn good start to a nice build if I do say so
myself. I still have to order
some parts like sprockets, motors, and attachment chain (still have any
laying around Will?).
While I'm waiting for the extra part needed for the build, I was going to
work on the turret.
Anyway, enjoy! The pics were to big to attach

Damn, I didn't get all them burn marks all sanded offlol The 1/4" PVC
did not want
to bend very easily. It took a pretty decent amount of heat to get that PVC

to move and more than one heating cycle to get it to round those curves. I
kinda wish I had ordered some thinner PVC sheet for some of the more complex

(curved) parts of the build. The rotate was a surplus item I got off Ebay a
couple
of years ago. I bought two of them for like $45/per (both have a home), but
the
seller has long since sold out. It has a smallish 12V motor pushing a
rather large
gear reduction. Haven't decided whether to risk running off the 24V supply
or just
adding a small 12V battery and running it off that. I guess if I burn the
motor out,
it wouldn't be that hard to replace. I'm still planning on rounding the
front fenders,
but my torch ran out of gas.

RE: [TANKS] CAD, who needs it? (WARNING KV-2 content)

2009-12-07 Thread Ben Holko
Hooah!

Where did you get the rotate assembly?

Looks like that ¼" bends fairly easily, or do I spy some burn marks?

Well, since I told Frank I was too busy to finish getting my designation for
the M113 in order
I thought I would share what I was doing this weekend. My Type 1 PVC sheets in
1/4" and 1/2"
arrived on Friday so I sat down Friday night for about two hours and drafted
some plans on my
office type desk in my garage for the KV-2. I basically used my T-Square to
turn my desk into a
drafting table (no computer needed or fancy software... :) ). Saturday about
mid-day I started
building and 48 hours later I wanted to share the results. It is made from PVC
sheet so the gray
color is not paint. It's just mocked up at this point, none of the pieces are
glued together, but I
would say it's a pretty damn good start to a nice build if I do say so myself.
I still have to order
some parts like sprockets, motors, and attachment chain (still have any laying
around Will?).
While I'm waiting for the extra part needed for the build, I was going to work
on the turret.
Anyway, enjoy! The pics were to big to attach
