Re: [TANKS] Re: French Connection was delighted!

2013-10-28 Thread Neil Rochford
The prototype II tiger will have a “open hood” feature like the Tiger you
used at Gettysburg. Did you like that option of opening the hull like that?

http://rctankcombat.com/battle-reports/BritishInvasion/photos/13-large.jpg

I cant think of a better way to gain access to everything inside the turret
, the open hood moved completely out of the way and closed back with no
chance of opening until required.

If you copy T001 with your tigers you will have one less thing to worry
about.

Fantastic news about the Shermans. you will need to build them with the
same robustness as your tigers. we cant have battles where the Germans
always win.

I am seriously considering buying an amount of Talen SR units, but they arnt
sold in the UK, so before I import a bulk order I was wondering could you (
or anyone using them ) show your wired setup inside your tank(s) and give
your account of their performance.

thanks

2013-10-17 Thread Neil Rochford
It was a pleasure meeting and battling you Loic. I was very impressed with
your ( and Steve's ) tiger, I have made a few of these little monsters now
and I can only wonder if any of my tanks could meet the challenges to
compete in the MAG events. its tough out there, and you put T087 through
rougher treatment than Id put any tank that I have ever built, and yours
still worked.
Knowing what i know about the troubles of building a 1/6th competitive
tank, Id advise to anyone looking to get into the hobby, unless you have
good engineering skills, masses of time and access to a well stocked tool
shop, Buy a FOA tank,
I just wouldn't like to think what the shipping would be the Europe.
keep up this very good and inspirational work.

[TANKS] Re: Fate of the British Empire

2013-09-24 Thread Neil Rochford
I expect that extra coffee cup is there for Funkyneroc (Miss Claire will be
alright waiting in the van (she can bring a flask))

Very soon (in a few hours) FTF top brass secret agents will be leaving on a
jet plane for the new world.
After a little scare that has now been resolved the lovely Miss Claire will
be aboard, supporting Neroc, Funkyneroc by way of devoted attention of a
personal kind. surprisingly little seduction is required as "00`s" have
previously demonstrated.

West Washington DC will be the first destination as the local casinos /
fancy swag clubs will be frequented Wednesday / Thursday evening where no
doubt a few suspected bad guys will be beaten to a pulp in particularly
interesting ways.
Hopefully shaken not stirred the British agents will be driving to take a
look at a stretch of water that British intelligence know only as
"Cheapskate bay". this destination is yet to be confirmed as correct
because miss Funnyfannys spelling isnt so good and it was Moneypennys day
off.
Gettysburg will be the next point of call for a 3 day stay (one day to get
over the weekend) then back down to DC in the Austin & Martin hire car for
a final Tuesday night of swanky how do you do.
It is not usual for "00`s" to give their travel plans over the internet but
this is a very special case where the FTF (in conjunction with the British
government) hope to "bond" with the local population.

[TANKS] Re: Field Marshal Tyng demoted?

2013-08-19 Thread Neil Rochford
With the journey to the new world only weeks away, The FTF are looking for
what to do during the rest of the week, Being a direct decedent of Morgan
Black (some say a fictional character in a video game) , Funkyneroc has
been wanting to follow in the footsteps of his Great great great
great great great great great great great great great great great great
grandfather. The Fountain Of Youth was said to be the stuff of legend but a
quick google search has located its true whereabouts-

https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=4&cad=rja&ved=0CEgQFjAD&url=http%3A%2F%2Fgizmodo.com%2Fthe-fountain-of-youth-is-in-florida-and-its-radioactiv-905187947&ei=fwQSUoiWNOWK4AS47oHYBQ&usg=AFQjCNH6OeJ80NPm3XKW_xzN5Llkoeuxtg&sig2=39QnEuHMuWsAj7HEtOq0gg&bvm=bv.50768961,d.bGE

If corporal Tyng also has internet connection then it is possible he has
discovered this for himself and has traveled south to drink from the
source, look for the wrinkles having smoothed somewhat.
The FTF plans to fill a number of 500ml bottles of the stuff and bring it
back to England (whatever I can get on the plane), after about 3/4 of a
million years when the waters main ingredient passes its half life it will
be good to go on the UK market, just in time for my Great great great
great great great great great great great great great great great great
grandson to make his fortune. And people think Im plane crazy, at least I`m
got a plan.

Wow , what a wonderful story. I will pass that on, I expect the $3/4
Million funding will be of interest to them, (Im asking for £300 funding
for the next academic year). Electronics is and will always be a mystery to
me but I hope some of my students can eventually show me a few pointers.
I have some quite bright students in my class, at the age of 11-12 years. I
have wondered If any of them will become engineers in the future as a
result of my tank building class. nothing would make me more happy. It can
be hard going teaching these kids but every now and again I see them doing
something that they couldnt do some weeks ago, This more than makes up for
the times when they damage something i`ve started off for them because they
havent listened or I`ve explained something badly. who knows?

I expect you could re-coop some of the cost of that 3D printer by making
drive wheels for fellow nearby tankers. Drive wheels are a part of the tank
that I have struggled with. I have never built a true positive drive wheel
to date and Ive built a lot of drive wheels.
Are you sure the plastic will be strong enough ? Excuse my ignorance but I
know nothing about this technology.

Dear Mr Pittelli .
myself and Mr Gaskel at Stockport Academy are about to teach our students
how to construct the number of c6c controllers you very kindly sent us.
However I have realized I dont have a picture or diagram of a c6c. You sent
3 completed and 3 kit form controllers but the completed ones are a quite
different design layout to the 3 in kit form.
Do you happen to have a diagram/picture of the ones in kit form please as I
cant find it on here-

[TANKS] Re: My new turret making method

2013-06-12 Thread Neil Rochford
Paintball blasts are not to be underestimated, a few years ago "war in the
woods" era,
Pete Arundels valentine fired a shot at close range (12 feet or so ) and it
blow a piece of the leopards turret clean off. we were nothing short of
amazed that a paintball could do this as it was pinned, glued and painted
6mm ply .sadly this drama wasn't caught on film.
As always battles are the best tests for structural resistance, its often
were the faults are found.

[TANKS] Re: My new turret making method

2013-06-10 Thread Neil Rochford
Its called "2D design" its very old . I just asked Iain ( the bloke you met
at my place) to install it on my work computer. to date i`ve only scratched
the surface of its ability's. he has said he will install on my home pc
also.
the only limitation is the size of the prints 300X550 ish and the amount of
hours I can get to use the machine.
This could be a major mile stone in UK tank construction. I dont see why
whole tanks cant be printed using this method, fiberglass and struts can
provide all the strength that will be required for hulls and turrets. once
the drawings are perfected I can make any number of lightweight and sturdy
tank parts, it can cut a wide range of materials (except PVC and metal).
Im even thinking it can print track pads cut from 4mm birch ply. its a case
of setting it up then returning a while later to retrieve the prints, all
perfectly cut every time.

very neat .

[TANKS] Re: M4A3 75mm Build Project

2013-05-23 Thread Neil Rochford
Søren welcome to the hobby. There have been other Scandinavian builders
over the years that have built fine tanks, I hope you become one yourself
soon, your Sherman parts look excellent .

I think Rob Currie`s point was that the more people buy electronic speed
controllers and test them, then the more information the group will have as
a consequence.
I think I myself was the first to use a "sabertooth 2X25" in battle and I
found that they are ok for a while at least but will need to be replaced
after a year or two. I have just bought a "sabertooth 2X60" and it works
great but has not yet seen battle, let alone a few years of battle. I do
like the look of these "Talon" controllers, I have just written to
my supplier in the UK (Technobots) to ask if they are going to be stocked
here. Id like to give them a try myself, when I do I`ll pass on my
findings, good or bad, to the group. I think this was all Robert was trying
to say.

I might ask Frank to open a new section of the site called "What Neil

condescending. Id like nothing more than to introduce such a regime to
rctankcombat, whereas anyone lacking behind in construction, (in my

constructive manner, or some other manner of my choosing.
Any message dated 28th January (or any other date) predicting FTF progress

Re: [TANKS] MAG esc`s in tanks

2013-04-02 Thread Neil Rochford
Ok , now I`ve goggled capacitor and done some considerable reading, I`ve un
blown my brain on the subject (after Mr Arundles complications) , so the
only question is how many farads of a capacitor would one require for a 12v
 / 100w ( ish ) pair of motors ? do they have a "way round" + and - ?
( I did buy a 10 pack of caps many years ago that Joe Summer told me about,
I`ll find and fit them )

Diodes, Im struggling with . Frank wrote - "relays/solenoids should always
have at least a diode placed across the coil leads (in reverse direction)"

my questions -
1, Are the "coil leads" the +&- wires ( v+ & gnd ) into the "relays/solenoid"
?

2 ,What size/type of diode ( there are many) for what size/type of coil ?
does
it matter?

3 ,How does the reverse direction thing work ? is that zero resistance
side of the diode to the V+ wire on the relays/solenoid and Vice versa ?
will anything be damaged if it was connected the wrong way ?

I realize I know very little about electronics and to be honest it hurts my
head, so if Im just out of my depth , please just tell me so and I`ll give
up. but it would be nice to learn.
my leopard ( T051 ) often fired a shot via the actuator when the turret
turned at speed. I think the motor (that spat out sparks) triggered the
actuator. id like to be able to avoid this in the future.

So if the interference is from the motors to the receiver why does it not
affect the receiver when I use a commercial esc like the sabertooth ? does
the sabertooth prohibit nasty "spikes" to the motors ?

This will be a 2.4 gig system.

What would a tin foil hat look like ? and what would be wearing the hat?
the motors, the receiver ??
I dunno

Hello Kyle . Please dont be put off by Bills frustration. its true that
members are few and far between. but the more new builders build, the
nearer they`ll be.

A number of tanks have molded track pads. I think its a great method of
making tracks.
Have a look here -

http://rctankcombat.com/articles/track-systems/

T001 and T011 are the ones to look at.

If you find you live a long way from any other tanker , just build another
one and pass the controls to a friend. btw paintballs in a sealed container
should last a long time. I have used paint thats many years old with out
any problem.

Will your 1/8th scale tank be 3 foot long ?

[TANKS] Re: 4 wheeled fighting vehicle

2013-03-12 Thread Neil Rochford
Thanks Steve for those excellent drawings. I could not ask for more ?

Joe , Im honored that you would follow my example involving construction
methods, ( actually it was Phil Palmer who showed me how paper mache can be
a build material ) but the main reasons I use paper mache is its a handy
way of keeping younger students occupied, (I have mostly 11 year olds)
and also its very cheep. When I have more school money I`ll switch to
fiber glass + resin. when Ive proved to the school I can get these kids
making reliable machines they will dig deeper in the funding purse.
If I was to use paper mache on the Fox turret I would need a rigid type of
material to form the ovoid part where the two halves meet . maybe an inch
wide piece of plywood, shaped to follow the arc, "is it called a chord ?",

I know its circular and not ovoid but I still think a frying pan hacked at
the ends is a simple enough idea, (better than a chip pan anyway).
Personally I would not feel confident in a US battle with a paper mache
turret, I think American battles are more fierce than UK battles. There is
only me that currently owns anything that I would consider "dangerous" in
the UK . The fearful Mr Tang will blast a paper turret to destruction in
the first 5 minutes of play.

Id like to see your progress when you make it. In my opinion every body
should make their progress public, its a great motivator to others.

them into circular wheels ? And did you make a jig to hold all the parts
of the wheel in line as they are assembled ? when ever I have attempted
what I can see you are doing, me wheels have "wobble" built into them. I
have had to do conriderable sanding afterwards to correct my mistake.

I think you might want to introduce some steel to your wheels since you
have wooden wheels and metal track guides. the guides will "eat" the wheels
within a short amount of time, of at least mine did when I built T051

some point due to all the power your tank will have. swing arms need to
cope with considerable forces and I would use 6x20mm mild steel as a
minimum. the weakest point will be at the pivot.
keep up this very good effort.

Re: [TANKS] Re: Tyng T-Max Suspension Photos

2013-02-09 Thread Neil Rochford

Just before the festive period Mr Arundle wrote > "I would argue that
although Neil is a prolific tank builder I'd argue that I am a better
designer and engineer"

below is a series of photos of the valentine "T073 aka Petes tank" that I
built and handed over to him almost exactly 5 years ago.

I ply skinned the turret and painted everything with grey primer.
I hoped it would be only a few weeks and T073 would be a serious contender
for the leopard ( aka Neils Tank )

Mr Arundel also said >"speaking as a man who has successfully fabricated
Vickers Slow-Motion suspension"
and
"from a 'get out there and battle' point of view I am beginning to think
that the simpler the better might be the way forward in future"

with all that said Id like to draw attention to T073 today-

http://www.rctankcombat.com/tanks/T073/

My question to Mr Arundle is can you give me your definition of the word
"better" and the word "successfully"?

Also to Mr Tang, I feel I must warn you , Mr Arundel is from a place called
the Midlands, but if you ever met him you might thing you have met an
individual from Middle Earth, at this point "feeling the luv" might not be
so desirable.
Mr Arundel has an excellent ability to source materials, and that is good
enough reason alone to say he has a very integral position in the KOR. I
just wish he would use these "better" skills and "successfully" bring a
tank to a UK battle.

I dont know about "luv" but my appreciation towards Mr Pittelli ( and Mr
Sommer ) is enormous.
Especially in a week or so when the considerable shipment of free rc
equipment lands at my door, my tank building kids will be absolutely
 thrilled.

[TANKS] Re: Newcomer with questions

2012-12-28 Thread Neil Rochford
Welcome to the site
Deflected shots do not count, a paintball needs to leave a viable mark for
a "hit" to be counted. Sloped armor will give a small advantage but I`ve
not seen much evidence of this in the battles I have been involved in.

A suspension system will add to the maneuverability of your tank but its
not particularly worth the effort on a first tank. Id advise that you make
provisions in your build to enable your self to add suspension later. A
good example of this is Fred Thompson `s T064 :-

http://rctankcombat.com/tanks/T064/002-large.jpg

The T34 is an excellent tank , T005 is a very good tank to copy and Steve
Tang has all his plans posted in the build pages.

The simpler the better for your first tank, I have a Tetrarch on the go at
the moment. a very simple tank. but bear in mind also that the small tanks
will present challenges to fit the paintball marker when the space inside
the turret runs out.

best of luck and ask lots of questions.

Well Dave, I`ve been trying to contact this fellow ever since you brought
him to our attention, I have discovered that he/them are part of the UK
tank club (UKTC).
The UKTC is an organisation that I have been ignored by on occasions over
the last 6 years. They build a fantastic array of rc tanks and static
displays,There attention to detail is remarkable with sound modules and so
forth. They are not interested in having paintballs fired at there
beautiful creations.
Im sure they know all about us ( rctankcombat )but maybe consider us to be
a little childish, playing tank paintball games and not getting down to the
serious business of building tanks that look and sound 100% like the real
thing. I could be wrong,
Maybe they just dont like me, theres plenty that dont.

listening to the accents of people on the video I cant hear one that sound
even remotely Scottish, Quite a few northern voices but nowhere I can
pinpoint.

[TANKS] papier mache tanks ?

2012-09-29 Thread Neil Rochford
Due to how impressed I was with the high quality of T055s new turret
( congratulations to Mr Palmer ),Im seriously thinking about using this
building material for making ( and mass producing hull / turrets ) for my
project in the school. I have had the kids building plywood hulls at
an unbelievable slow pace (all most as slow as some people on here,) and so
im looking for alternatives.
What id like to know is what experience have members had with "layered"
paper mache, good or bad ?
Im thinking of building a tank hull / turret mold, with screws in it where
I want accurate holes, then simply add layer after layer of news paper
soaked in wall paper paste, then painted with emulsion inside and out and
finished with coats of varnish. these tanks are powered by KKM, with less
than 50w of power at 12v so I think they will miss the pounding most of us
expect our tanks to endure . If Im wrong then we will have some very
annoyed 11-15 year olds.

[TANKS] Re: An August UK battle date-

2012-07-30 Thread Neil Rochford
Hello Blake, nice to hear from you, Im having trouble joining your site .
>From what I can see the work is very impressive, very fine attention to
detail. This isnt the quite the approach we take at `rctankcombat`, we
scratch build 1/6th paintball "toys" rather than "models", We build tanks
that can be wiped down easily to remove paintball hits. would any of your
members share an interest in our kind of battles ?
I see you have members only a few miles from where I live (Mancherster UK)
, I think we can help each other by sharing awareness of each others site
and hobby.

Re: [TANKS] Re: suspension questions

2012-07-27 Thread Neil Rochford
Love it Dirk,
Your tank does have a bit of "build first, think later" look about it but
I say well done to you. its a tank and you have built it, that gets my
respect any day of the week.
I agree with Aaron`s option 3. build another with the added knowledge you
have acquired during this build, get battles underway in your corner of the
world.

Its about time Tyng tech returned to the work bench. The newbies (and some
oldbies) require inspiration.

well James I hope you do because I`ve just had some bad news from our
school business manager today. Stockport council have declared that
non curricula weekend events on school grounds are no longer permitted.
There are houses nearby and residents must get tired of the noise + abuse
and have complained.
What this means is for the time being we will need an alternative venue.
This is a great shame,
I am considering a second battle in my back garden if no other site
presents itself .
please tell me your thoughts .

You could always hold a battle event near you, We usually sneak an October
battle in before the season ends, .

Hello Dirk, I`ve gone through some of the tanks that have swing arm
suspension and the following have good descriptions of how it works that
you can follow.
T014 - 40 - 58 - 59 - 66 - 67 - 74 - 78

[TANKS] Re: An August UK battle date-

2012-07-23 Thread Neil Rochford
Hello again James

what would be the postage on an item like that ?
What if I were to pay the postage and Pete donates a esc , it can then live
at the FTF. It can always be ownership of James M but it can be used for
all KOR battles.
If we come down south to a battle that you wish to attend I will bring it
so that you have use of it.

We have a few 12v 12AH that Mr Arundel has salvaged as he moves within
the affluent select.
We have some that could be used in your tanks. Technobots have stopped
selling SLA`s .

2012-07-17 Thread Neil Rochford
Like Pete I also find the picture disturbing , so much so in fact that I
almost fell off my chair in disturbance. Liz seams to be enjoying it but
I`ll bet Unfortunate Eric and Family wont be happy when they need to fork
out for a new royal hip replacement. People have been sent to the tower and
never seen again for far less.

Mr Palmer a Battle where-abouts Email is on its way to you, can you confirm
you have two working tanks.
The Valentine resides in some garage in the north Midlands somewhere,
unloved and neglected, despite my persuasive attempts, Mr Arundle
is determined not to let me salvage the beauty as he must prefer T073 in a
not working state.

T051 is 99.99% working and T068 has a few problems but will pull through.

Pete is very up for it , I answer for him because he is too busy enjoying
his exciting and rewarding life style.

So the stage is set for a 4th August battle and if desired the 18th August
also.
Anyone who wishes to attend will be sent directions on request.
