The holes you see in the front panel are used to keep the back/sides in 
place.  The back/sides of the unit have been removed to show the inner 
workings, with all primary components shown in the photo.  There is only 
some point-to-point wiring below the base you see, with a couple of 
resistors.

They are both Type 30 tubes made by RCA in the 1930's, but they serve 
different purposes in the circuit.

When i get home ill look it up in my RCA tube manual... maybe there will be
a clue in it, like frequency range or gain...

A quick Google search shows its a triode that only has 4 pins...

Im genuinely curious what needs amplification and a tuned circuit but isnt
related to radio or audio...

Ok. Heres my new theory then.

The multi-tap shielded inductor, the variable capacitor and one tube form a
Hartley oscillator.

Of course that leaves a second tube and potentiometer unaccounted for. I
want to say regenerative receiver but we established its not...

didn't have the proper diodes, resistors, capacitors or other circuits  at 
the time?? don't know what they had to work with out there, but that one  
thing still doesn't look like any rotary selection switch i've ever seen in  
older equipment

We can see two sets of machine screws or bolts with nuts in the middle of 
the panel at the top of the photo.
They aren't connected to anything on the back side that we can see.
Can we assume they are only cosmetic (holding a name plate or similar)?
