Yes, we have added more specific terms to our list of relationships,
most recently chairperson, researcher, and reviewer.  We try to stick
to single words if at all possible.

I would consider just "$esupervisor".  We might have supervisors of
task forces, research projects, etc. for which that would be useful.

[RDA-L] relationship designator for those supervising a report

Hi,

I am having problems assigning the correct relationship designator for a World 
Health Organisation Report I am currently cataloguing in RDA.

On title page

"Sustaining the drive to overcome the global impact of neglected tropical 
diseases : Second WHO report on neglected tropical diseases "
No author stipulated but World Health organization symbol at bottom of page

On title page verso


"produced under the overall direction and supervision of Lorenzo Savioli and 
Denis Daumerie" and later
 edited by David W.T. Crompton.

I am giving all three persons a 700 entry but can't think what relationship 
designator to describe Lorenzo and Denis. Any thoughts anyone?

As the Toolkit states "If none of the terms listed in this appendix is 
appropriate or sufficiently specific, use another concise term to indicate the 
nature of the relationship" I thought I could take a stab at $e supervisor of 
report. Interested to know what others have come up with in similar situations.

So far as I know, there is no list of terms for 33X $3.  When there is
more than one carrier, we attempt to use the Most popular term: Book,
CD, CD-ROM, DVD, etc.  Since so often the term is an all cap acronym,
unlike you we capitalize other terms for consistency, e.g.,Book, Map.

In some examples you used 338 "online", where "online resource" is the
RDA carrier term.  

Under no conditions would I display 337.  (Even entering it is
optional.)  It hurts nothing to have it in the record in case you
might want to search on it in the cataloguer mode.  (We may not have
MARC's fixed fields for such searches in Bibframe.)  

We would also not use "online resource" as a unit name, when a more
exact term is available, e.g., PDF, website, streaming video,
database.  It's redundant with 338; the 338 "volume" is replaced by
the more exact  "pages" in 300 when know; unit name does not have to
be the 338 carrier term.

Re: [RDA-L] Custom Editions of Textbooks: incorrectly merged into full version records

I checked  the bib records for the custom editions I cataloged, comparing the 
version in our local system to that on OCLC.

856652501 has a different edition statement from 657600624 ("Seventh edition, 
Kent State University edition" versus "7th ed.").  It has a different 
publishing arm ("Bedford/St. Martin's Custom Publishing" versus "Bedford/St. 
Martins"), a questionable publication date versus a single date, a 500 note 
saying it was a custom edition for a specific class, and a 775 saying it was an 
excerpt of the manifestation, 657600624.

857243644 is also significantly different than the bib it was merged into, 
670324855, in ways similar to above.  It also had a different edition statement 
("Sixth edition, special edition for Kent State University" versus "6th ed." ) 
It also had different pagination, height, and a 775 saying it was an excerpt of 
the manifestation, 670324855.

I have reported these as incorrect merges.  People may disagree with having 
bibs for custom editions included in WorldCat.  But surely, if they are 
included yet have so many differences - including edition statement (which I 
thought was a key element to preventing incorrect merges)- they should not be 
merged once there. Perhaps OCLC's merging algorithms need to be tweaked.

Since those editions are unique to a particular campus, and it is unlikely 
anyone would want them on ILL, there is little need to have the records in 
OCLC, apart from libraries using WorldCat Local.
