Re: [RDA-L] Can Lecturer be used as a valid relator term and do you have a good example of a DVD + Book RDA record?

2013-04-07 Thread Henry Lam
Hi

I think we should not treat this as DVD of motion picture or musical
performance. We have to know the content of the DVD first. Since it is a
kind of teaching/learning materials, the DVD may be a recording of
lectures. In this context, I think assigning access points to the agents
who are responsible for the creation of the course materials and the
performer (the person(s) giving the lectures) is more appropriate to the
users than the agents who are responsible for the creation (producing) the
DVD.

My 2 cents.

Henry

 Hi everyone,

I’ve searched the list and couldn’t find if these questions had been asked
 before so here goes.

**1. **We are cataloging a Great Courses DVD and course guide. We
have the lecturer and course guide author in the 100 field. What should his
relator term be? Is $e creator sufficient? Though he isn’t the creator of
the DVD…? He is a kind of performer and author…? Using $e lecturer seems
 silly.

**2. **Related note: Can the relationship designator just be left
 off entirely?

**3. **Does anyone have a good example of a mixed media RDA record?
One combining both DVD and course guide, for instance.

 Thank you!

[RDA-L] Preferred title of manifestation(Was: Re:Date of publication not identified DtSt, Dates)

2012-10-23 Thread Henry Lam
Hi

Do we need a Preferred Title of Manifestation or Authorised Access
Point for Manifestation to connect the manifestation to other Group 1
entities?

Where are the rules in RDA?

Where this reasoning goes is this: Since the 245 has a dual role, why not
 split it?

Currently, the 245 is description and access point. Should we split them?

We already do this, though inconsistently, through uniform titles/preferred
 title of the work, yes?

[RDA-L] Good article to share

2012-08-20 Thread Henry Lam
Hi all

This is good article. Simple and easy to understand.

FRBR and RDA: What They Are and How They May Affect the Future of Libraries
by Charles R. Croissant
(THEOLOGICAL LIBRARIANSHIP, An Online Journal of the American Theological
Library Association, Volume 5, Number 2, July 2012)

Abstract: “Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records,” a document
issued by the International
Federation of Library Associations’ Cataloguing Section in 1997, has
achieved the status of an important theoretical
model of the cataloging process, in effect, a theory of cataloging. It is
the foundation on which the new cataloging
code, Resource Description and Access (RDA), is based. An understanding of
the FRBR model is essential to the
understanding and application of RDA. This paper explains the
entity-relationship model that FRBR presents: the
bibliographic entities (work, expression, manifestation, item), their
attributes, and the relationships that connect
them. It explains how bibliographic records based on the FRBR model would
be structured, and demonstrates how
FRBR informs the structure of RDA. It describes the controversies connected
with the forthcoming implementation
of RDA in March 2013, and explores the implications of this implementation
for the library community.

Re: [RDA-L] RDA requirements in LMS

2010-02-11 Thread Henry Lam
Dear Su Nee

The keyword of RDA is extensibility and interoperability. I would
think a xml-based system would be better than a marc-based system.

The new system should support integration of traditional collections
and digital collections into one catalogue. It should have an open
cataloguing workflow with ready tools supporting exporting and
importing of records offline. This is to give you more freedom to do
mass modification due to change of rules and practice, and ingestion
of records from external sources.

I'm wondering with the upcoming RDA, what are the things I should be looking

Your thoughts would be deeply appreciated.

 Thank you.
