[RDA-L] ALCTS CaMMS Copy Cataloging Interest Group program at ALA Annual 2013
Apologies for duplicate postings: You are invited to the ALCTS CaMMS Copy Cataloging Interest Group meeting on Saturday June 29 at ALA Annual in Chicago: ALCTS CaMMS Copy Cataloging Interest Group Saturday June 29, 2013 8:30 am 10:00 am McCormick Place Convention Center N229 Agenda: Angela Kinney, African, Latin American Western European Division, Library of Congress Library of Congress Update Tricia Mackenzie, Metadata Librarian, George Mason University RDA Audiovisual Cataloging The implementation of RDA has made tremendous waves in the cataloging community. In response to RDA, librarians have developed webinars and presentations, and published articles covering the theory behind RDA, the differences between AACR2 and RDA, and RDA cataloging for print resources. However, there has been less of a focus on RDA cataloging of audiovisual materials on a larger scale. This presentation will cover the differences in AACR2 and RDA cataloging of videos, and how these differences play out in the MARC record. Ruth Elder, Cataloging Librarian, Troy University Library, Troy Campus Erin Boyd, Cataloging/Librarian, Rosa Parks Library, Troy University, Montgomery Campus Olga Casey, Technical Services Librarian, Troy University, Dothan Campus Audio-Visual Materials and RDA: How to Maintain Consistency in a Multi-Campus Library The implementation of RDA will affect all libraries since the majority of the records are AACR2 and will not be converted to RDA. This is especially problematic for non-monographic materials because of the shift from GMDs to the new 300 fields, among other things. The challenge is how to establish a quality and functional catalog in this hybrid environment. For this reason, the Catalogers on each campus of Troy University collaborated on the various options (cataloger's judgment) offered through RDA and developed best practices for copy cataloging in our multi-campus library environment. For this presentation, we will discuss how we developed these best practices for Audio-Visual materials, various training methods, and how we are utilizing our in-house Technical Services wiki to keep staff up-to-date with practices, procedures, and examples as they evolve. [RDA-L] ALCTS CaMMS Copy Cataloging Interest Group ALA Midwinter
Apologies for duplicate postings! You are invited to join the ALCTS CaMMS Copy Cataloging Interest Group on Saturday, January 26, 8:30-10:00 AM at the Renaissance Seattle Hotel - Compass South. Angela Kinney, Chief, African, Latin American Western European Division, Library of Congress will provide a report from the Library of Congress followed by: Deborah Fritz,* presenting: RIMMF: RDA Minus MARC What will copy cataloging look like in a world without MARC? Working under the assumption that we will still do some type of cataloging in the new non-MARC environment, this presentation will illustrate how similar and yet different our procedures might be, using RIMMF to show how we might do searching, matching, and editing for a set of non-MARC 'records' for a resource. RIMMF is a prototype of how RDA-based software might work, minus MARC or any other underlying encoding format, hence its name RDA in Many Metadata Formats. TMQ (quietly) released RIMMF in April 2012 (under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/). RIMMF is designed to be: * a visualization tool for catalogers and system designers, to help them to get used to thinking RDA, instead of thinking AACR/MARC * a cataloging training tool, to help educators teach RDA thinking RIMMF is not a 'real' cataloging tool, because, although you can use it to create and save data, it does not allow you to save records that you can actually use in an ILS. It does, however, let you apply RDA thinking to metadata creation. Using RIMMF, you can practice copying, cloning, and creating WEMI and PFC data; and, using it, you might just possibly get an idea of how much the RDA/FRBR way of thinking will change the way we do cataloging. See the RIMMF wikihttp://www.marcofquality.com/rimmf/doku.php?id=rimmf and RIMMF Noteshttp://rimmf.wordpress.com/ for more details about RIMMF * Deborah Fritz has specialized in cataloging, and teaching cataloging for the past 24 years. She is the author of two cataloging books published by ALA Editions; and has been teaching cataloging workshops around the U.S. and internationally, since 1988. She and Richard Fritz operate a cataloging training, and software company called The MARC of Quality aka TMQ Inc. Instead of writing another cataloging book about RDA, she and Richard have decided to focus on figuring out what is necessary to design software that could help catalogers to work with RDA. The RIMMF software she will show you is a first step in that direction, but she wants to assure you that there is MUCH more that can be done by real 'cataloging' software, to simplify the 'cataloging' process, once RDA really takes hold.
