[RE-wrenches] SDHW Anti-Scalding Valve

2008-12-04 Thread Mark Frye
Folks,

In California, for a single DHW system serving a multiple unit building; DHW
is a storage tank with indirect heating via an internal heat exhanging loop;
heating loop supplied by high temp (145 deg) gas fired boiler;

Is an anti-scalding valve required on the output of the storage tank? If so,
by what authority?

If a solar heated storage tank (drain back) is installed ahead of the main
storage tank, does that change the requirements?

How does the 225 amp rating make it ideal for 60 amp breakers? 20% of
225 amps is 45 amps - and even with rounding up it only gets you to 50

Re: [RE-wrenches] Insurance classification

2008-12-04 Thread Randy Hatch
Wrenches,

Our insurer has stated this:

There is a SOLAR ENERGY CONTRACTORS classification ISO uses the number
99080, if he asked about a renewable Energy Installer then the company
may have not been looking for the correct classification. Also his insurer
may use their own classification numbers and names. If that is the case then
the HVAC class may charge the same rate as SE Contractors.

Also you are listed correctly; the classification applies to all works
including heating, cooling and power generation. A separate classification
needs to be listed for sales of solar equipment; if you look on your
Commercial GL coverage part of the policy it lists Stores class code
18437 this is to pick up any direct sales that you would have for parts or
equipment that you don't install.

In New Mexico, you just need to be a licensed electrician to do solar, so we
were just listed as electrical contractors, but we recently switched category :
Solar Energy Contractor 95648
Todd's listing sounds even better, though.

Kirpal,

The term in the tax Code is Placed Into Service.

What is the date that the system was placed into service such that it
can serve the purpose for which it was built?

Note that the date is the date on which the system is capable of serving
the purpose, regardless of whether or not the owner chooses to use the
system for that purpose.

In this case, backfeeding a net meter is clearly part of the purpose of
the system. As such the system cannot be placed into service until the
net meter is in place.

Hold off on the interconnection until January.

Of course, this is all strictly a matter which can only be discussed
between the owner and his tax advisor.

Greetings..we recently installed a solar pv system on a residential
customer and it has been inspected by both the local electrical
inspector and the state rebate authority and approved. Now that we have
passed those inspections, the next phase of the process is having the
utility company come out and install their new meter for net
metering..I was wondering if anyone has a definitive answer as to
what actually commissions the system? We are thinking of having the
power company hold off until after the new year so that the customer can
get the 2009 tax credits instead of the 2008 credits...
The question is does the system get commissioned once it is inspected or
once the power company gets the new meter installed so that the system
can actually be turned on.
Thanks for any advice...It actually could be worth its weight in
gold!...
Cheers,
Kirpal Khalsa

[RE-wrenches] Inter-row shading calculator

2008-12-04 Thread William Miller

Friends:

We have a number of resources on our web site available to anyone who
wishes to use them. One is an Inter-row shading calculator based on an
Excel spreadsheet. It came to my attention recently that there was a flaw
in this calculator. I have since repaired the flaw and I have re-posted
the corrected spreadsheet. My apologies if anyone was lead astray by the
error, but at least the error favored greater spacing.

If anyone wishes to check this spreadsheet against their own trigonometry,
I would be grateful. The page is:
http://mpandc.com/resources/resources.html -- find the Inter-row shading
spreadsheet. The sheet is protected but there is no password. If you find
it handy, drop me a line. If you pass it on, keep my name on it.

Thanks,

William Miller

Re: [RE-wrenches] Square D 225A load center

2008-12-04 Thread Kent Osterberg
Almost right Christopher. NEC 705.12(2) allows the ratings of the
overcurrent devices supplying power to the bus bar to be 120% of the
busbar rating. For a 225-amp busbar that amounts to 270 amps. So a
200-amp main breaker and a 70-amp back fed breaker from the solar
system. Or a 225-amp main breaker and a 45-amp back fed breaker from
the solar system.

Christopher Freitas wrote:
Ahhh – I think I get it – you get the 20% of the 200 amps (so 40 amps) +
