Re: [RE-wrenches] Best angle - direct grid tie
Thanks for all of the excellent advice regarding the best tilt angle. It is a real privilege to be a part of, and have access to the incredible resource of the knowledge and experience represented by this list. It looks like a 30 degree angle will work fine for 39 degrees N. This corresponds well with the Unirac U-LA, pre engineered designs. [RE-wrenches] Power Factor and Grid Tied PV
Hello Wrenches, Commercial power customers often are penalized for low power factors. Looking for other info I came across this article, which seems to cover the subject from an academic standpoint. http://tinyurl.com/ye5pzrwDoes anyone have real world data which might shed light on the impact of a DGT PV system on power factor. I think one of the recent Solar Pro web articles discussed the unity power factor production of the dgt systems and their affect on the overall p.f. Better than no ground at all, but not reliable. Some codes allow it, but we would never use it for a main ground. .. Re: [RE-wrenches] Water Pipes as Grounding Electrodes
The primary reason to ground water pipes is to provide a path to ground in case an ungrounded conductor shorts out against water pipes or equipment in a water system. Have you ever been shocked by touching a sink, instant shower heater in Central America, or touching water in a poorly wired house? It is not so uncommon for a person to become the shortest path to ground. It is good practice to bond the water system to the grounding electrode or other grounding conductor. Re: [RE-wrenches] Power Factor and Grid Tied PV
I recently spoke with an inverter manufacture and I left with the following opinion. Normally the inverter takes the unity power factor load and leaves the reactive load. making the power factor worse. However the power factor could be corrected by the inverter, However this would add cost to the inverter and would not appear to have value to the solar industry. There are variable reactance devices existing that can correct power factor, is there need for another device? Re: [RE-wrenches] Water Pipes as Grounding Electrodes
Thanks guys, Follow up: When providing a three-line drawing, in New York, on a new construction, few story building, which means they'll have a ground rod (hopefully) at the Main cabinet, do you think it's necessary to detail any ground connections from the solar to the water pipes? No right? (Unusual inspector) They are totally different systems when there is a Grounding Electrode present. In modern construction practices, they are bonding the water pipes only, not using the water pipes as any part of the grounding electrode system and therefore don't come into play? And then, If on top of this building, there was a Satcon inverter, on the roof, and that Satcon was getting grounded to the structural, can I run just one ground wire to the roof, or do I need to run a ground conductor and some kind of bond wire? And again, the water pipes are not involved here, at all. With appreciation, Ryan J.
