[RE-wrenches] Mac compatibility with Modsine

2010-10-09 Thread Carl Hansen

 Greetings,

Does anyone know if newer Macintosh computers are still incompatible
with Modsine inverters, and how about Mac loptops ?

   Thanks,

Re: [RE-wrenches] Enphase v. string inverter

2010-10-09 Thread jay peltz
HI Marco,

I can speak to the last.

I've got 2 enphase AC coupled to my outback offgrid system, and while I can't
compare them to a standard grid system, I can say they don't come on before my
MX-60 controllers do.

Does anyone know of any reports out there from a neutral, 3rd party which
compares an Enphase array with an array using a string inverter with both
arrays on the same unshaded surface?

Some Enphase peddlers here are saying that the energy harvest from an Enphase
system is going to be better since they supposedly come on sooner and stay on
 later in the day.

One guy is actually saying that the Enphase inverters come on before the sun
comes over the horizon. Maybe from the same family that claimed that a-Si
modules produced power from the moonlight.

 Thanks,
 marco

My Mac Book Pro (from early 2009) worked off of a cheap-O 12V cigarette
lighter 150W Mod Sine
inverter while driving to MREF from Minnesota last year (I was in the
back seat) That is,

until we stopped for lunch and battery voltage dropped.

When we came back out of the restaurant, the inverter was dead. The
battery voltage dropping is

the only thing I can think of that would have killed it.

I also seemed to notice that the Apple power supply got quite a bit
hotter when running under

this waveform. Not sure how much hotter exactly.

That's one experience.

No problems here with a Xantrex DR and MacBook charging from it. Can't
help you regarding Mac desktops, never tried them on mod sine.

boB, Truck Stop and China Direct Very Please And Thank You brand
inverters give me the willies, since so many folks try to hard wire them
in with a male AC plug off the front panel to a breaker box in remote
cabins and campers and such-- because when the ground and neutral are
bonded, anywhere, all bets are off on the Truck Stop variety. When they
say portable inverter and there is no hard-wire 120VAC output buss,
that means PORTABLE-- Plug things with 3-prong 120VAC plugs into the
front panel of the inverter only. Otherwise you can get anything from a
strong tingle from the outlet plate screw to a fire.

At least I have not seen many male-to-male 120VAC extension cords
recentlythat was back near Y2K.
