Re: [RE-wrenches] Low slope membrane roof attachment

2013-11-26 Thread Carl Adams
Don,

Thanks for the pointer to SNapNRack. We like their racking for residential
systems, but have not used the 4 hole standoff kit. So on a white membrane
roof what is used to seal the roof cone flashing to the membrane, and what
is the height of the roof cone flashing. It seems the cone height will
determine the minimum standoff shaft height.

You mentioned you don't use the other hardware. Are just attaching an
LFoot to the top of the post?

[RE-wrenches] Microinverters with S-5-PV

2013-11-26 Thread Jason Szumlanski
Does anyone see a problem (NEC/UL/physical) with mounting microinverters to
S-5 Mini clamps and mounting PV on S-5-PV Kits? The trunk cable could be
supported with clips on the module frames. Wire management could become a
bit difficult, but doable.

This would be a pretty cost effective mounting method compared to rail
mounting, I think. The micro would not have much of a base to sit upon, but
maybe a fender washer between the clamp and the microinverter would be fine.

Has anyone done this?

Obviously AC modules work great in this scenario, but that's not always
what the customer wants...

Re: [RE-wrenches] Low slope membrane roof attachment

2013-11-26 Thread Jason Szumlanski
Carl,

In my experience, roofers in our area insist that a manufacturer approved
flashing be used on posts, and for the popular Firestone TPO that means an
8 flashing on small diameter posts. Some roofers have been known to
fabricate custom flashings that are lower, but I'm not sure how that
affects warranty. I've seen others with the boot squashed down, but that
pools up water in the boot.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Microinverters with S-5-PV

2013-11-26 Thread Nick Soleil
Hi Jason,

Using the S-5 mini clamps does work with our microinverters, but you do
want to keep the microinverters off the roof. Enphase recommends (in our
manual) a 3/4 distance off the roof. The microinverter can cause the
seems to bend over, and inspectors may take issue if the microinverters get
too close to the roof.

If you use a taller S5 clamp, then the microinverter can run downhill,
parallel to the seems. In that case, the microinverter will sit on the
seem, which we support 100%.

Another issue is wire management, which you brought up already. Clipping
the cable to the module frames is a good practice.

An additional fender washer is not required below the microinverter.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Microinverters with S-5-PV

2013-11-26 Thread Jason Szumlanski
Speaking of wire management with Enphase, has anyone gone through the
effort and expense of cutting module DC leads and installing new MC4
connectors on wires that are just long enough? I'm assuming this voids
module warranties, but I've never looked close enough to confirm.
