You could try contacting the Wisconsin program called "solar for good".
They have a system for their timber framed car port.

Hi Kirk,

Way back in 2016, Bob Maynard made a recommendation

for a racking product called Solar RainFrame. It looks like the weblink in
that post is now broken, but I see an updated website at solarrainframe.com.

For larger arrays, you might consider a product from Nucor called
PowerShingle
. One
of my buddies recently installed that product on top of a parking garage,
and he seems satisfied enough with the results—i.e., he has not observed
any leaks after the first few months in service.

Re: [RE-wrenches] sealing a carport array

2023-09-13 Thread Daniel Young via RE-wrenches
Agreed with August. I have tried professional window teams using pro grade
caulks and sealants. I’ve tried gaskets, I’ve tried the foam tape system Lumos
suggests for their canopy system. Nothing has allowed a reliable and longer
term seal. I moved to the same standard, 100% requiring a roof under the array
as part of the canopy if water protection is desired.

For me canopies without dedicated roofing provide shade and limited snow
protection. Protection from rain is limited to giving pedestrians several
larger areas to hide under solar modules but water gets concentrated at the
module gaps.

Hi Kirk,

This probably isn't the answer you want, but we insist that a conventional roof
is installed (could be metal, bitumen, etc) and then install the array on top
if the client needs it to be watertight. It just seems like everything else
such as rubber gaskets or tape will be temporary or problematic over time.
Maybe others out there know of a good way to do it!

Re: [RE-wrenches] sealing a carport array

2023-09-13 Thread Kirk Herander via RE-wrenches
I am using bifacial panels for albedo harvest, so no roof surface, just
open rafters. Mod rails mounted perpendicular. The Sunmodo gasket did work
well in combo with bottom mounting the modules ( i.e. no top bolts between
the panels to interfere with the press-fit of the gasket). But you
really need to make the gap a little wider, 1/2" or more, to get that
particular gasket to tap in easy and snug. I used Ironridge camo clamps at
additional expense instead of the UFOs.
