Yes, the wire tie asks like a deflector protecting the ribbon, works great,
goes quick, inverters are too heavy to deal with for a simple fan swap.
BTW, Replace the temp sensor at the same time.

Considering slot/board alignment, ribbon cable, sensor and poor
visibility when attempting either a board change or fan swap on a VFX
Flex Power 3 or 4, if you're doing it on one of the FX's in the middle,
leaving on the wall may not work out so well.  Might be time to pull it off.

Jerry, so is the nylon wire tie idea to allow the casting
to push in the ribbon cable a little as the case slides past it without
catching on it?

And I think it was Ray about replacing boards when the fan
dies.  I've had fans die in 5-6 years and boards last 15+ years though
it does depend on how old everything is and the condition of those pesky
relay covers.  Both boards are a lot more money than just the fan if the
situation doesn't qualify for yanking boards.

Hi Wrenches, I have a client with an Outback GVFX3524 inverter that has had a
fan failure. I will check with Outback but thought I might get a head start
here. Is this a field replaceable item? I know the boards are but not sure
about the fan. Any info much appreciated, thanks.

Re: [RE-wrenches] GVFX3524 fan replacement

2021-02-15 Thread Kent Osterberg
For a GVFX you don't have to worry about reinstalling the large o-ring
on the perimeter of the case, so you can do it without taking it off the
wall. Don't think I'd disassemble a sealed case unit without taking it
off the wall because it is just about impossible to get the o-ring back
in place. But you have everything removed to the point that there are
only four screws left, so you might not be saving any time. To protect
the ribbon cable during reassembly I put a heavy piece of paper (like a
slick coated business card) over it that extends to the outside. When
the case screws are partially tightened, the paper is removed.

If you haven’t opened one up before, the red and black round

Yes but it faster to remove it than fight the boards shifting.

Best trick I know is to cut a slot in the DCA so you can pull it out without
removing the cables first. Of course you have to remove it to cut the slot.

Greetings Ron,

Yes they are quite simple to replace and inexpensive as well. I highly
recommend purchasing Outback replacement parts from zonnaenergy.com as they
offer great support and often have more replacement parts than Outback
themselves. Count on 45 minutes to an hour 15 to remove all the necessary AC
and DC conductors and removal from wall plus re-installation. You may want to
order a replacement thermistor at the same time depending on it’s age.

Supper easy to do hanging on the wall, yes be carfull of the ribbon so use
a nylon wire tie to protect the the ribbon when putting the cover back on.
The wire tie goes perpendicular to the ribbon as you slide the cover back

Re: [RE-wrenches] GVFX3524 fan replacement

2021-02-14 Thread Ray
You'll pinch the ribbon cable, get really pissed and have to take it off
the wall anyway.  I just deal with the tight AC connections, the DC main
lugs that should not be torqued over 7 ft-lbs, and take it off the
wall.  Every time. I also now go ahead and do the control board, and the
AC board if the clear covered relays are getting hard to see through
from soot on the inside. I just don't have time any more to run out 3
times in 6 months fixing an old Outback system.

Its really like replacing the timing belt on a car and not replacing the
water pump at the same time.  A year from now, you'll wish you did.

Ron,
Easier than board replacement, but you need to open the body up the same
way. The fan is attached to the upper part of the housing - 4 screws and a
single connection. Trick will be finding the fan, although I think lots of

Field replaceable, just like any work inside the inverter be very carefull
to protect the ribbon and when removing front cover the fan is plugged into
a board and you can damage the board if you are pull the cover to far away

Re: [RE-wrenches] GVFX3524 fan replacement

2021-02-14 Thread John Blittersdorf
Hi Ron,
Yes it is field repairable. Just open up the inverter and the fan is in
that outer housing. When lifting the case up, remember the fan power wire
needs by be unplugged as you lift the case as not to rip it off the circuit
board it is attached to. Then you will just turn the case over and remove
the fan and replace with the new one. Then carefully plug it back in
before completing the replacement of the case.

If you haven’t opened one up before, the red and black round plastic
spacers on the dc terminals are screwed off, the six small Phillips head
screws removed from the exposed AC board, and the 8 screws holding the case
to the inverter base removed and lift the case up part way until you can
see the fan wire.

[RE-wrenches] GVFX3524 fan replacement

2021-02-14 Thread Ron Young
Hi Wrenches, I have a client with an Outback GVFX3524 inverter that has had a
fan failure. I will check with Outback but thought I might get a head start
here. Is this a field replaceable item? I know the boards are but not sure
about the fan. Any info much appreciated, thanks.
