2018-03-01 Thread Kienan Maxfield
I have been very impressed with the Grundfos SQFlex pumps. I have installed
several of them over the last 6 or 7 years, and I haven't seen any issues yet.
I've had way better success with them than with the sun pumps for wells. They
are extremely versatile, efficient, and seemingly fantastic quality.

I've heard great things about the Lorentz pumps, but I haven't used them so I
can't offer any comparisons. I get an awesome price for Grundfos from my
regional distributor which is Delco Western. I've looked into a few other
wholesale places, and they can't seem to touch Delco Western's prices. If you
want more info on the Grundfos, you can contact me off-list, and I'll give you
my pricing and any info you may want.

Thanks,
Kienan

I have one on my own well 480’ down a 800’ deep well. At the time, they could
only handle 500’ but since then have one that can pump from 1000’ and more. I
only sold a few. I did have to replace the circuit board on the controller a
couple of years ago and delt with a Lorentz dealer which seems to be the major

Overall, I have been impressed with the pump. It turns 17 Year’s old this year

connected it to a 48 volt system when a cabin was built near the wellhead.

Allan and all,

I just purchased a Lorentz pump and motor to
replace an ETA HR-14 that ran flawlessly (the ONLY one!) for
  10 years.
I did have to establish my creds with Genpro
but then they referred me to a local distributor that sold me the pump
  with no hassle.

Perhaps the policy is different with
  other distributors?

On another note, my favorite pump is
the Grundfos SQ Flex. But their
customer service is frustrating at best and most
  of my suppliers have stopped
carrying them. I, too, am hesitant to switch to the Lorentz line due to
  the long list of
woes caused by the regrETA pump line.

Tom,
Rant:
I would caution you to be very careful working with Lorentz pumps. About 16 months ago we got a service request from a longtime customer for whom we had installed an ETA (Lorentz) PV-direct submersible in late 2005. The pump had worked well for nearly 7 years, serving community water for four off grid households, but the helical rotor had finally worn out, as I recall. I called GenPro about purchasing a replacement head, and was told that the US has been divided into northern and southern territories by Lorentz, and I needed to contact another company (whose name is in our records but not my head). That company told me that we could neither buy a replacement head nor a replacement pump, as we were not licensed pump dealers.

Grundfos had once allowed their pumps to be sold through all sorts of channels, and it came back to bite them hard, as PV internet retailers with salespeople who knew next-to nothing about pump selection and water system design were selling pumps to anyone with a thick wallet. Grundfos tech support was overwhelmed, and changed policy to allow their pumps to be sold only through water and well industry distributors. That made a lot of sense to me, and we never lost our ability to spec, purchase and install their pumps, as our longtime conventional pump distributor knew we knew our business. But we'll never become "licensed pump installers", and as a result, we'll never carry or recommend Lorentz pumps.

I had sworn off ETAPumps years ago when the failure rate was too high; I had eventually learned that those issues had been resolved and the pumps and controllers were proving pretty reliable. But this issue killed it for me. If anyone can offer an update to suggest that the situation has changed, please do so! (Jeez, I have a Lorentz pump in my own well at home, courtesy of Windy. I'd replace it, but it just hasn't stopped working yet. Talk about a bit of hypocrisy...)
Rant:

Tom,
Besides getting feedback from other Wrenches, I'd talk with GenPro, your distributor, about support. I'm copying this message to them; if I get a useful response about my rant, I'll post it to the list.

We have 1 Lorentz installation in Haiti and about 9 in West Africa - pumping
around 10,000 gpd.  Started using them a few years ago because we were having
lots of problems with Grundfos.  To date, I believe we've had problems with
1 controller and 1 pump. (not sure, but a wiring error on the part of our local
techs might have caused one of these problems) We're now buying from American

  has changed.

  Tom,

Re: [RE-wrenches] Lorentz Pumps

2013-05-18 Thread Mac Lewis
Hello Ray,

We have had success selling solar pumps, but nothing in the 30,000 gpd
category.

Unfortunately, as I understand it, Lorentz will not sell to anyone that is
not a licensed pump installer. You may talk to GenPro at
http://www.genproenergy.com/lorentz-submersible-pumps.html to get the
latest about Lorentz, or maybe team up with a licensed pump installer and
do the solar part.

We have had great results with the Grundfos SQFlex system for anything that
we have installed and haven't found the need to specify a Lorentz.

Good Luck

Ditto on my experience with Lorentz. I have pulled more than I can count and
recycled.

I have had a great experience with BISON SOLAR helical pumps we have several
in and no issues. Typ designed for stock tanks they can be field configured
for domestic pumping AC & DC.

Huge range of options and sizes.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Lorentz Pumps

2010-05-18 Thread Allan Sindelar

Kent,
We're dealing with one right now. Installed late 2005, the last Lorentz
we installed because it was at the tail end of all the Lorentz
troubles. So 4 1/2 years in residential use.

We were to pull the pump this morning, but postponed one day because of
heavy overcast. Troubleshooting suggests that the array checks out and
the pump checks out in terms of resistance between phases and to
ground. Low water sensor doesn't check out. We replaced the controller
(good support from Solar Power and Pump in Elk City OK) but didn't
resolve the issue - it's now beyond what the troubleshooting chapter
covers.

If I learn anything interesting I'll post it here.
Allan

[RE-wrenches] Lorentz Pumps

2010-05-18 Thread Kent Osterberg

Fellow wrenches,

Problems with Lorentz pumps have been discussed here before. Yesterday,
I responded to a no water complaint and found that the Lorentz pump we
installed in 2007 appears to have seized up during six months of non-use
(it's for stock water). This is the second identical failure for the
same customer. The pump is in a deep well that it is unlikely to over
pump and there is a low-water sensor too. For those of you that have
installed these pumps, what types of problems have you observed? How
long are these pumps lasting? Thanks any replies.
