Re: [RE-wrenches] SolarWorld Poly

The PPSI [Photon Photovoltaic Stock Index] in the magazines most recent
issue shows that the stock value of SolarWorld AG has dropped 51.6% since
Jan. 1, 2010. I'm sure this has something to do with the modules 'makeover'.

  Friends:

I got my hands on the first of the new poly modules today. I understood
that the new framing would be present on the new mono and poly modules.
They are called the plus series.

The new frames present some problems. There is no place for an Acme clip
and no provision for back mount clips. We have been using the Acme clips as
really the only listed, non-plastic, commercially available cable routing
device on the market. Now that these don't work, we spent the day figuring
out an alternative technique for routing PV cables. I think we came up with
a pretty good solution that works with the DPW P6 rail and Enphase
components that appear to be our new norm.

The glass on these modules looks cheap. It is reflective and not flat.
The frames look and feel flimsy. It used to be the American made meant
quality but I'm not so sure any more.

I spoke with my vendor and he said that complaints have been rolling in
about the lack of a flange and the frame will be modified to include a
flange. No idea how soon.

  Sincerely,

  William Miller

I agree, we just received our first ones too on Wednesday, and the
reflectivity is ridiculous. I have Arco 16-200's, Siemen's M75's, Shell's
too here, all top notch. This Poly series is a real down grade in SolarWorld
quality for sure.

Re: [RE-wrenches] SolarWorld Poly

2011-06-23 Thread Nik Ponzio
Bill,

I was afraid of that!

One thing I didn't mention earlier is that the old-style frame widths of the
Mono have some significant variation from end to end. This makes it
difficult to maintain a nice even gap between rows. The newer Poly frames
(top-down only) seem to have a much tighter tolerance on the square
dimensions. I still like the Mono style better, but it sounds like we will
have to adapt...

We did also have two freight-damaged shipments. This is mostly an issue
caused by a careless forklift operator but the factory distributors are
also cutting corners with the packaging.

If you see receive a pallet that looks like this,
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/_23bAMmghhHRqFjEzsOtkyibeFbxo7C9BtDVyGYSu5g?feat=directlink
I suggest you refuse delivery and let the shipper deal with the freight
claim. What a pain that is!

Otherwise, no failures yet. All systems are go!

in my opinion. I believe they are working on their own clip system, last I
saw it looked a bit German and a liitle too fancy for my tastes. I have
not compared glass surfaces between the two models, but I would suspect that
they are switchign to the cheaper reflective glass on all their new
models. Cutting cost in one place and adding in another! Over all thouh a
 good solid module.
