Re: [RE-wrenches] battery box fan

2008-11-08 Thread David Palumbo
Hi Larry,

Try a RIB. Relay In a Box. www.functionaldevices.com Our local electrical
supply houses stock them. They are versatile relays and reasonably priced.
We use the RIBU1C. The coil ratings are 10-30VDC, or 10-30VAC, or 120VAC.
The contacts are rated for 10A @ 277VAC or 28VDC. They also carry several
other AC ratings depending on N/O or N/C application.

Wrenches.

On an upgrade to an existing system, we just installed a Xantrex
XW6048 inverter. We have a 48 volt dc battery box vent fan that we
used to run through the relay on the old SW5548. The XW6048 has a 12
vdc aux output so I assume we need to install a relay to run the fan,
12vdc input, that will allow 48 vdc output
Any suggestions on what relay to use?

Thanks

rating of a single pole single throw relay, or a two pole, single
throw and wire the contacts in series. Find the current rating of
the Fan and make sure the relay contact rating is greater than this.

If your fan is less than 1 amp, like a small computer fan, you can power the
fan directly, else you have a problem, because you have 48 volts and need a 48
volt fan or a voltage coverter 48 to 12 volts. Solar converters makes such an
item aloong with others.

Re: [RE-wrenches] battery box fan

2008-11-07 Thread Allan Sindelar
Larry,
Few relays are rated for 48V DC, as that DC voltage is high enough that
relay life is compromised by arcing of the contacts. However, the current of
the Power Vent is so tiny that this shouldn't be an issue. If you have an
old open-coil power relay with a 12V coil lying around the shop, use it.
Otherwise, an automotive relay is easy and cheap to use.

You may find it as easy to replace the 48V Power Vent with a 12V unit. There
the main issue is that the 12V and 24V Power Vents have a 2" diameter
exhaust vent, while the 48V is 3".
