Re: [RE-wrenches] Advanced Energy Inc. Grid-Tie Inverters

2008-09-23 Thread Jeff Yago
Thanks for all the great feedback.  This installation was more screwed up than Hogan's goat, so replacing the inverter is the least of the clients problems.  I found that there was no ground wires to any modules, no ground rod, no GFI, and it is a metal pole mounted array located in the center of a grade school playground and has made a great jungle gym.   This system passed city electrical inspection, so what else is new!

Most likely we will be asked to totally rework and replace the inverter with a different brand after we install an approved grounding system, and yes, we will need to rewire the array for a higher voltage since this system was set up for less than 80 volts DC input.

Thanks again to all including those who wrote off-line,

Re: [RE-wrenches] Advanced Energy Inc. Grid-Tie Inverters

2008-09-23 Thread Geoff Greenfield
Only too familiar with them Jeff...

48 VDC, 120 VAC output. You may be able to field repair it (?). in the lowwer
section (string combiner/disco), above the input fuses there should be a master
fuse... the fuse doesnt fail but the fuse holder fails... if thats it your back
in business with a soldering iron... if not, scrap it.

depending on the modules, we have used SB-1800 (120 VAC output). I think the
small PV powered looks like a solution as well.

Good luck.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Advanced Energy Inc. Grid-Tie Inverters

2008-09-23 Thread Rob Harlan

Jeff,
Input voltage on the AEI GC-1000 is 48VDC. I have had two stop working and
my usual source for servicing inverters wouldn¹t return my calls when they
heard the brand name. These units are very simple inside. If you can¹t or
don¹t want to rewire the array and use a different inverter you might try
opening it up. I was able to put one back in business by replacing a fuse
holder with a fried connection. The second one that went out I took to the
local high school electronics lab where the students were able to replace a
couple of standard components. I am sorry I don¹t have more details but
don¹t expect any warranty service on these guys.

2008-09-23 Thread Brian White
Jeff,

I am not sure of the input Voltage characteristics of the AEI GC-1000, but I
know that PV Powered has a new 1000 Watt inverter that is a 120 Vac output.
They also have a variation of this model that is called the "EVR" or Expanded
Voltage Range, which has a much wider Voltage window. It may or may not work
for you, but it is probably worth a look.

Hi Jeff,

Yep the AEI GC-1000

Not being made anymore, nor as far as I know is anyone servicing these units.

Best bet is to rewire the array for higher voltage and use a new inverter.

Not too many other options that I know of.

I could not find any information that this inverter is still being made, and
estimate it is about 4 years old.
